Here’s a fact about the Chinese in ww2: After the Doolittle raid on mainland Japan in 1942, many of the Chinese citizens helped the pilots get to allied held land. Because of this the Japanese then massacred over like 200,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers.
So, fun fact: Nazi Germany trained and equipped the Kuomintang (Nationalist Chinese) army, to the point where at the start of the Sino-Japanese War, the more elite Chinese units crewed German vehicles, used German tactics, carried German rifles, wore German _Stahlhelms,_ and were advised (and in some cases led in combat) by German officers. This at a point in time where at least on paper, _Germany and Japan were allies._ History is wild.
From what I understand Japan had already defeated much of China's army and had most of the major points of importance in China on the onset of the war, although I think there is some clash in time with the onset of WW2, but before Japan was considered a major issue by the European allies. They started in 1937.
Yeah Japan basically conquered most of the major cities but couldn't push further inland and defeat the remaining Chinese which would lead all the way to the end of WW2 (There was also Operation Ichi-Go in 1944. A Japanese offensive which mostly succeeded but was too little too late)

1931-1936. China and Japan have been at odds over the Manchurian incident. Chiang kai-shek's plan was to end the civil war with the Communists, build a modern army with 60 German-style divisions, wage war with Japan, and eventually recover Manchuria. However, Japan was very dissatisfied with Chiang kai-shek's anti-japanese stance and hoped to foster a pro-Japanese government in China that recognized Manchukuo. 1937-1939. The sudden Marco Polo Bridge incident triggered the war early, but neither China nor Japan was ready for war. China rushed into war with The Japanese army without having enough modern troops ready and suffered heavy casualties. Japan wanted to end the conflict in a short period of time, believing that after capturing major Chinese cities, the Chinese government would surrender. But after a series of large-scale battles, the Chiang Kai-shek government remained resolutely resistant. The war turned into a stalemate because Japan lacked sufficient troops to maintain its occupation and expand its front line. At the same time, Japan was threatened by the Soviet Union, and part of its forces were tied up in Manchuria, while China continued to receive military supplies from the Soviet Union and Britain and the United States. 1940-1941. The Japanese army launched several seasonal annihilation operations, trying to destroy the main forces of the Chinese army and continuously bombarded the rear cities of China to break the resistance will of the Chinese government. Lacking air supremacy and heavy equipment, The Chinese army often suffered disproportionately in a head-on conflict with the Japanese army. Therefore, the Chinese army began to choose to avoid combat and only defend important cities in response to the Japanese annihilation strategy. The situation in Europe had changed. France had surrendered and Britain was in danger. The Soviet Union signed a neutrality treaty with Japan and was invaded by Germany, which ended its aid to China. With China isolated and helpless, the kuomintang government wavered in its will to resist, traitors cooperating with the Japanese emerged, and the puppet government was established. 1941-1943. Japan's expansion in Indochina attempted to cut off the Allies' material aid to China, which led to strong sanctions and an oil embargo against Japan by the United States. Roosevelt sympathized with the Chinese people and asked Japan to withdraw from China, but It was impossible for Japan to give up its occupation in China and admit defeat. In the international situation of 1941, the Japanese launched Pearl Harbor and quickly occupied the resource areas of Southeast Asia, believing that their ally Germany would eventually defeat the Soviet Union and The United Kingdom and that the United States would not fight the entire Axis group alone. The participation of the United States, let China see the hope of victory, China plans to obtain a large number of military materials through the Burma Road, to achieve a counter-offensive against Japan. But in 1942, the Burma Road was cut off by Japanese troops. Chiang demanded that the Allies land in the Bay of Bengal to reopen the Burma Road, a plan Roosevelt initially agreed to. But Churchill advocated a Europe-first strategy, and eventually in 1942 the Allied counter-offensive against Burma was cancelled, and the tranships were used for the landing operations in North Africa. At the same time, Japan decided to send millions of troops to attack Chongqing, China's wartime capital, to wipe out Chinese resistance. However, the changing situation in Guadalcanal forced Japan to temporarily cancel plans to attack China, and only a few smaller attacks were carried out in 1943. China survived. 1944-1945. By 1944, China was still not getting enough supplies because of the Allies' Europe-first strategy. The long war brought the economy of the KMT region to the brink of collapse, with inflation rising 20-fold and military and official salaries not increasing, so corruption was inevitable. Most Of the Chinese army was far less well supplied with materials and manpower than it had been earlier in the war, and more than 200, 000 well-trained Chinese expeditionary forces were deployed to the rear of the Burmese border at the request of the Allies. The Chinese army stationed in India and yunnan Expeditionary Force launched a counter-offensive to open up the Burma Road. At the same time, the Chinese front field faced the biggest offensive ever by the Japanese army. The Chinese defense lines collapsed and many allied airfields were occupied by the Japanese. The international status and image of the Chiang Kai-shek government declined significantly, and the Allies believed that Chiang kai-shek was conserving his strength and fighting passively. So much so that at the Yalta conference the Allies sacrificed China's territorial sovereignty over Mongolia to seek Soviet war against Japan. In 1945, the Burma Road was opened. Elite Chinese troops returning from Burma joined the counteroffensive against Japan, but allied atomic bombs and Soviet attacks prompted Japan to surrender, ending the war prematurely.
