  • This is an awkward video that I threw together as a follow-up to my other awkward backpacking gear review.
    It's bad. I'm sorry, but it's true.
The good news is that Princeton Tec's Axis Rechargeable Headlamp is a lot better than my bad video review.

It's nice to see you doing this again! Your delivery is succinct and full of facts, and your voice is clear throughout. For future episodes, you might try for some better transitions, like fading out the intro song, or fades between cuts where applicable; they aren't necessary all the time, but can make some transitions smoother. Instead of blinding the audience with the brightness or holding the product offscreen while using it, show more of the product and it's abilities onscreen. Show how its different modes affect a low-light room. Also, talk about what you like about the product and what makes it better/different from headlamps you've used before. Thanks for uploading! Looking forward to seeing more from you.

My old Fred finally bit the dust and I'm considering one of these as a replacement. How do they hold up long term?

Pretty well. The plastics in older Princeton headlamps had some hit-and-miss longevity in high-stress locations, like battery covers and this has so far escaped that fate. It's a good headlamp.

Hello, what does the battery pack look like? Can it be hot swapped? Can it be recharged while on?

The battery is internal, and the whole assembly is unitized, so it can't be removed without serious modification of the housing and wiring. I do not believe that it can run while receiving external power. When it's plugged it, the red LED takes over as a status indicator. I hope this helps!

For what it's worth, the Petzl headlamp has a separate battery cartridge that can be hot-swapped or even swapped to AAA power. I think that's very useful and could be great in a pinch. I have a small auxiliary battery pack that I carry with me to recharge lights and cameras in the field, which has also been very useful.

Thanks so much! Been looking for a compact head lamp with red light that's rechargeable
