@@betsi9183 Hello, if you want to study chemistry, the motivation should be the key, not the salary. Indeed, some studied chemistry but gave up because it is too difficult. The scientists will recognize those who have a passion for science. So I recommend you to do a job in which you feel confortable!

I loved this video. It truly was an insightful look at what chemists do in the lab. Most, if not all videos focus on the person waking up to an alarm, what coffee or breakfast they have, how they commute to work, but this was absolutely hypnotic and great choice of music. Liked and subscribed.
When I was 16 I wanted to be a scientist in chemistry so I studied all the known elements from minerals to chemicals and pure forms of chemicals. Then my father told me and warned me not to stuff around with chemicals they can explode. So listened to my dad and took up a career studying plants instead so I gained a lot of scientific knowledge over the years and achieved my qualifications and studied at school and tafe and achieved my credentials.

It's only hard when you expect it to learn itself. Chemistry at least from my experience of studying it in UK is nicely divided. I'd say it's about 50% memorisation and 50% understanding concepts. For myself, I've always liked to understand things, not memorise, so the 50% of understanding came quite easy. However, the memorisation part (usually organic chemistry) wasn't as pleasant. Luckily for me covid hit and exams were open book. So instead of having to memorise 100s of mechanisms and reagents, I only had to memorise on which page to find them :D.
You can take a degree in Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at colleges/universities. Then after the required years of the degree, take the licensure exam to be a licensed chemist.
Penth90 you inspired me to become a chemist. I was interested in finance and banking stuff, now that those roles involve a lot of screen time, I was skeptical of other job options. Hello, what a lovely day! I think you work is more about microbiology than chemistry due to the hood! In chemsitry, we do not need to work in a sterile conditions. I appreciate your video and hope you will do more like this!
For this particular part of the project where we exposed green microalgae to mehtylmercury-thiol complexes - yes! The culturing part at least. :) After the cell disruption, the analysis of MeHg concentration and other complexes in cellular membranes and intracellular content were pure chemistry on various instruments (depending on the target analytes). 🙂 Thank you for your comment! 😊
I'm looking into careers and trying to choose a major currently, and I really like Chemistry. The only thing that has me a little concerned is that the work-life of a chemist seems kinda lonely. Is this true?
Hey Garrett! Well, I would say it depends. Sometimes you are alone in the lab working (dancing, singing, listening to music :)), and sometimes there are other people together with you in the lab prepping their own samples or you are doing some analyses together. That's at least from the practical point of view. Apart from that, you are of course surrounded by colleagues who are working together with you on a project and you have meetings, presentations so there is some team work after all! :) Cheers!
In a chemistry lab you should never be lone working. It's dangerous! Biologist however do this all the time. I share a lab with about 10 others and also pop into other labs. We spend most of our day in the lab and some time in the office. My work is very social

As a PhD student you conduct experiments and gather the experimental data which you later analyze and instead of a standard 'report' you write a scientific paper which is then sent to a scientific journal. :) And of course you write the thesis which you defend at the end of the postgraduate studies. If you do some teaching however, you correct the students' reports! :) I was writing reports mainly during my bachelor and master studies.

@@jshunshine606 no you dont need to study maths seperately..its not like you should know hard core maths. It's good if you have selected math as a subject in your high school or so. Because basic math skills will help you do some calculations as an analytical chemist. In analytical chemistry math skills and analytical thinking are important.

Hi! Physical chemist here. My work is mostly in advanced microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM, STM, AFM, etc.). I would say there are more jobs in the analytical and biochemical disciplines compared to other branches of chemistry. If you are interested in forensics, I would definitely recommend analytical chemistry.

For most industry jobs, they care about how your specific skill sets relate to their products. What can you bring to the table that they don’t already have? But more importantly, how you think through problems and process information. As well as fitting in with company culture, values, etc.
I think you’d only be able to know that and be sure about it 100% is if you started studying chemistry at college and was exposed to the different main branches of chemistry reading about all of them helps but it’s not enough cause you don’t have any experience studying them
Well after high school, you can already work as a chemist in the industry. If you however want to continue with studies and do you bachelor's and master degree, then about 5ish years after high school :)

If you want to go into research you should continue with your Master studies as soon as you can. The position of a PhD student is a paid position, i.e. you would be employed by the University. It's just the matter of finding a good research group where you want to do the project you are interested in. :)
Yes, you can work in labs with a bachelor degree and some experience! Further education is mostly if you want to stay within research and Academia. Although master's is always good to have, it's only one or two years depending on the country where you study. :)
Back then lab work was mixed with academic work (reading and writing papers, data analysis etc.), but now I work at a private lab, water analysis department so... pretty much 6 out of 8 work hours! :)
What type of chemistry? Looks much more biology based to me... looking at alge, using petri dishes. I'm an organic (as in carbon/nitrogen/oxygen based) chemist and purely work with chemicals, performing reactions and analysing them. Goggles 100% of the time, hair tied up and nothing in the open bench! If this looks like the work environment you dream of then probably dont study straight chemistry 🤔
Yes, there is some analytical chemistry involving different analytical methods shown here. Also, algae culturing I show is used a lot in biotechnology for example. Depending on the project multidisciplinary science such as: chemistry/physics/microbiology/ecology and many others can be used! 😊

@@bari9500 Well in this particular video there is a short scene in the end showing the instrument for liquid chromatography - electrospray ionization - mass specteometry. Otherwise my lab also uses gas chromatography - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry.
