Made one of these for my Ladyfriend's birthday present. She loves it and gets tons of compliments on it. It was a bit involved for my first "real" leather project, but the templates and the tutorial video made it manageable. Some takeaways: - So. Much. Hole Punching. Seriously, like so much. - Used way more thread than I was expecting. - I used super-thick (like 8-9 oz) plain veg tan so this thing is beastly. Would definitely use something lighter if I were making another one. - If you're using veg tan and want to dye it, do so *after* you cut the pieces, *before* you stitch anything together. - The "releasable" double-sided tape from 3M/Scotch makes placing and cutting the pattern super easy. Just make sure you don't use the "permanent" variety. I cannot recommend Tony's patterns highly enough. I've got another one (dieselpunk executive) I'm looking forward to making when I get some time after new years. If you're thinking about making one of these, the patterns are absolutely worth the money, and the video walks you through from start to finish.
I used woven wax thread. Pretty sure it's 1mm, might be 1.5, but it doesn't say on the amazon listing. Get the 284 yd spool, it's worth it. I didn't actually use dye, just neatsfoot oil to darken the veg tan, but I've used Fiebings dye on other projects with good results. Try it out on a test patch. If it's too dark/intense, you can cut it with some rubbing alcohol. Wear gloves and basically treat it like spray paint: it'll get everywhere and on everything. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@@jamesgilbert124 Hey James...question: when you got the pattern, was the bag the same size as the one Tony made in the video, OR was there a larger one also? Was the one you made (sufficiently) large for a man to use? PS: How did it look with neatsfoot oil only? THANKS!!
@@wjvlodek8769 Pattern download came with both the "small" one Tony made (12"W x 8"H x 6"D) and a pattern for a larger one. The large pattern would be more duffel bag/gym bag size, where the small pattern is more of a lunchbox. It looked alright with the neatsfoot. Somewhere darker than regular veg tan, but still lighter than Feibing's brown, but it came out kind of splotchy. I'd definitely go with regular dye for color and just use neatsfoot for softness.
@@jamesgilbert124 Hey Jim!! Thanks of the response!! Much appreciated!! PS: I recently made a (few of) Tony Dopp kit....and one I dyed with the Fiebings dark green. It was really the first thing I ever dyed. There was a guy on u tube made a small purse and explained (and showed) how he dyed....he applied the dye 3 times in different patterns, (vertical, horizontal then diagonal) to assure total coverage with the leather damp (with water). After it dried, applied neatsfoot, then when the product was finished applied Saphir wax. I did this and the finish was beautiful. I also sampled a piece with the same process and used Johnson's paste wax and the shine was just as nice, but it had a bit of petroleum scent. Just passing it on. THANKS AGAIN..have a good day!!
Real excited for this! Ordered and printed yesterday, cut it out today, and will be piecing it together as soon as my hardware gets here! Thanks so much for the awesome patterns - great for a challenge as I'm getting started.
This bag is beautiful. So glad I found your channel and even much more gladder 🤪 that I found your Etsy store! Your style is very refreshing and unique in a vast sea of thousands of minutely different yet the same “Japanese Style Roper Wallets” your store is fantastic!

Great video, Tony. I've watched it twice already this AM. Want to get all my supplies together and away I go. You hardly used any glue!! And the length of your needles - wow - much longer than the harness needles I use here in the USA. I also noticed you did not add a filler to the rolled leather handle. Why? Many thanks for your hard work. A great video and YES - I can believe it takes 14-16 hours - there's a whole lot of stitchin' going on...
Beautiful work InDesign but little bit complicated put together Tony your Malto Bane, I agree with ather guy you reall" PUTSO" TONY YOU THE BACT ITALIAN MAN BONO FORTUNA🤗
Hi Tony, Thanks for that great video!! I bought the bag pattern from Etsy and have begun to cut my leather. I don't have rivets. Could you tell me what size of rivets you use, please?? I'll be purchasing the Newsboy hat soon ~ I need to find the just right leather...Thanks again!!
When you made the pattern, to match the amount of holes for the gusset and the "main-body" - did you count the number of holes? Or do you have any other tips to get the gusset to match up? Thanks!
Hi... That's an awesome piece...made by super precision... I want to buy 20inch sized bag... After reading few comments...I visited Etsy web....but couldn't get the size selection option in the shopping.... Do they supply in India as well...??? And.... What would be the price for bigger bag.... Thanks....
Great tutorial and I just bought the pattern. What size of rapid revets should I best use? And I do not have a spindle machine, can I put all in by hand? Even the bottom ones?
What leather did you use? where do you buy your leather? Also it looks like the color of the leather is solid, and when you have the cut pieces their edges are darker, how did you accomplish that? it is not shown in the video
This might help, I just ordered some hardware and was able to custom order a zipper from zipperstop.com. Found a YKK #5 closed bottom zipper and was able to pick a custom shortened length from the 36" one to get it down to 20"
Hello! Please tell me how to calculate the length of the sides of the front and rear walls that would coincide with the holes? Bag 35 cm in length! The sides want round like on Your bag! Thank you very much for the answer!
Hopefully you will still answer this. Is 15sq ft for the small or large bag. I want to make the large bag and have a 20sq ft side coming and want to know if I have enough for the large bag, if not I will use it for another project and get the right size. I didn’t see a sq footage in the instructions with the pattern I bought but I may just be dumb.

What is the square head on your hole punch? Something you made or can we buy one?

What type of knife are you using to cut your patterns and leather with?
And where can I get one from? This exacto knife isn't working so well.

You can find directions on here for making your own stitching horse, which would save you some time and frustration. Nice work
A stiching horse would of only helped on a couple things and i don't think it would of helped that much anyways
👏👏excellent l love it

you can use a hammer to carefully set the rivets. I use 7mm ones for my bag
Thank you. Over here they only have 6 or 8mm, I'll go for head size 7mm and pin 8mm then (I think)
I want this bag 😭
With making a bag like this could you build it with a sewing machine
You very nice Guy you do very nice work but use drill for the leather bag it's a real Patho capito🤗 Tony you the Bast

Hi Tony, what is the thickness of the thread, please ? I can’t se it on the item description ;) many thanks
I used 1 mm thread
Absolutely gorgeous..... do you teach also?
Does the pattern include the dimensions of the crossbody straps?
what can this bag be used for...? it looks too small for luggage. Are there different size options in the pattern pack? Tnx!
two sizes, yes
Cool
Could you use some sam brown studs on the bottom to help protect the base??
Yes. Absolutely
Brilliant work. Any chance you could do something similar but using a sewing machine rather than hand stitching ?
sorry, only hand stitched
Hand stitching looks so much nicer.
Hi, awesome work. i am checking your etsy store. one question before purchase, this bag pattern also include the same style but bigger? thanks
yes, both sizes are included in the pattern
Im a Newbie to leather working, why do you hole punch the stitching holes instead of stitching iron?
i find it easier. but a lot of people dont. I guess it is a matter of preference and technique.
Easier stitching? because the holes are bigger?
every hole is computer generated and therefore perfectly placed for a symmetrical design. Especially when creating curves
How long is the zipper?
what thread and size are you using?
i feel like im watching tom and jerry because of the background music haha
Is it true that Vaseline can hurt leather?
pls, how do i get this 2mm hole puncher
Ay, Tone. I purchased this pattern, I can't figure out how to get a zipper that fits , any suggestions?

@@TomBauer1984 thanks for the information, much appreciated
At 6:19-ish, why did you rivet the leather filler? could you not have glued it in place since it does not support anything?
yes, absolutely, glue is also a good way to do it
