Thanks Glen, I like this style cross, I usually give mine a ballpeen finish for aging affect then wire brush with a brass wire brush but I like this change up you did👍

Good stuff Glen. I'm still listed as a subscriber at my end and had this video promoted when it was released, as usually happens with subscribed channels. There seems to be various glitches with YT, which occur now and then. Comments appear and disappear on some videos, view numbers often change and so anomalies with subscriber numbers isn't a surprise either. It isn't good though, for hard-working producers and I can imagine how it may dent morale.

I have also lost a considerable amount of subscribers recently so it must be another RUclips fault as it's happened before but I fully agree with you it's not good considering we are small channels and seeing a loss of subscribers makes it feel like all the filming and editing effort we put in goes to waste it's such a shame. Yeah, that hot cut worked well. I figured out a small mistake I was making in the past when heat treating this air hardening steel (H13) and so these tools have been better. At the end of the day, I'm not going to worry about the RUclips numbers too much and just continue to do my thing. But I'm sure you know very well that it's a long process trying to build our names through RUclips and get a good following. We mainly make original content with what we do which is probably tons harder than just commenting on some gossip, showing skin, or cussing people out for views. Anyway, I'm not going to worry about what I can't control. Keep up the good work. Thanks. Glen

Hey Glen I'll be hanging around I admire your work and videos, Funny I just made 12 split crosses a day ago there very basic 5/8 x 5/8 stock, I ran out of railroad spikes plus the fact spikes take me quite a bit longer. Keep the faith,cya chuck

When I make these, I usually cut the arms and the top to a shorter length. I make a lot of these from rail spikes. I flatten the head so it stands on its own and make the cuts. For the cut coming from the bottom, I have to make a 45 degree cut just past the head of the spike to detach what will be the top arm. Hard to describe in print, but fairly easy to do with a cut off wheel and hacksaw.

how do you keep the hacksaw blade to stay nice and center in the metal.. mine after about the 1st inch

Sorry to here about the youtube hick up .Just to say great job on the cross I like it and by the way I wont be going anywhere. You come up with some amazing ways to do different things and that is what makes your channel interesting for me. Not to tell you what to do but fyi Bladesmithing is good for views ? It doesn't hurt to try different things ya know Picture it you could do Bladesmithing to highlight your progress into it and still do the artistic type as well but the Bladesmithing is real hot right now.But Anyways you do great work and it is nice to see someone who loves the craft put forth some amazing things.

Besides the glitch, you should also push for more likes in your vids - they make a difference getting you into the trending lists which helps pick up even more subs. Theres a chrome plug-in to auto like vids, definitely a good add on for viewers since paging down or dropping full screen to like a vid is a pain. Hope you get your sub base back up - don't let youtube get you down!

What kind of anvil do you use and does it lock together or are the swedge inter meshed. I would like to have one like it.
Don, The two block style anvils you see me using are my own designs which I had made here in Taiwan. They do not interlock and are only placed side by side. I was having a hard time finding an anvil that suited my work style and so took advantage of the resources available here and got these made. They are multi-functional - heat treated completely so any surface can be used. I'm very pleased with them. Thanks for watching. Glen

I am not a blacksmith but I Love watching your vids (U R 1 of only 4 smith's I Subscribe to) (I also love Big Dog Forge, Chandler Dickinson, an 1 other) I love how you explain things so clearly. I was wondering if you were Making a traditional church type cross, could you just cut 75% and 25% instead of 50/50 and have a head start on the bottom leg being longer? I Love those bent knee tongs you made, to me that shape just makes perfect sense! Thank you for all the vids, I honestly wish my retirement income would allow me to donate to all 3 of my favorites.
Edward, I'm very happy that you like watching my videos. Yes, for a split cross like this, you could saw more for one cut that the other and have the legs be different lengths. In this way, the sides could be shorter and the top and bottom longer and so only the top would need to be cut or adjusted to make a crucifix style cross. How do you keep the saw cuts to stay in the center with the hacksaw. mine always veer to one side???
I've used a hacksaw quite a bit over the years and so obviously practice is one way to get straighter cuts. Another thing to consider is your hacksaw. I would suggest using one of the somewhat newer "high tension" hacksaws which can tighten the blade enough to remove any waviness. These hacksaws also seem to have more rigid frames made from tube rather than solid steel. Lastly, try keeping your elbow pressed against your side when sawing and don't flare your elbow out. Glen, you could easily use the same concept to create a trivet or a candle holder. Now I do not know what happened to your subs and views, but I had noticed that RUclips had unsubscribed me from several channels that I have followed for years. Plus I noticed a few weeks back as I was going through my subscription feed and would click on a video to view it that the subscription button underneath the video was red, which indicates that I was not subscribed. I thought that was odd since the video was in my subscription feed, so I went to the channel page to double-check since it may have been an error with how the page loaded and it showed the same thing. Checked my feed and the video was no longer listed. This tells me that RUclips had introduced an error into their system with the last update and will now check my subscription status prior to leaving a channel or video page. I wonder how many I had missed and tend to think most people wouldn't even notice it. I have also had two videos show up in my feed that I had no interest in from channels that I never heard of. Not sure what to do about this. Anyway, it is nothing that you have done. Be well my brother!

Have you played around with how wide you can get he split before it gets unstable?
Could do a cool folded cup holder with that middle hole being where you put your beer or whatever.
Chris, No, I never tried making one with a very wide opening. I'll have to give it a go as that might be a good way to make other items which have a large void in the center. I like the cup holder idea - give it a try. Thanks. Glen

I don't know if you have heard about it since this video but there is a glitch with RUclips in that when someone subscribes and then unsubscribes, the unsubscribe is counting as 2 in the system. I don't think you have really lost anyone and I think they should be sorting it out.
There is actually a guy that has made a game of it and I think he currently has something like -1500 subs.
Erik, Thanks for sharing this info. Since you wrote this, I checked a couple of channels that said they were affected by this glitch. I don't think this was my issue but you never know. I know RUclips can't be easy to run but there always seems to be some sort of technical issue at all times. I'll just keep on making my videos and hope for the best. Thanks. Glen

if you make another one could i suggest splitting the tips on two and rolling them over in a little scroll pattern, or if you get really fancy in a fluer de lyse if i spelt that right. I think that would be an ornate way to make the two sides shorter than the top and bottom. You haven't lost me as a subscribee

Do you make the anvils to sell? I think enough have asked that would be willing to buy. Just starting to learn and will self teach as I go as well as learn from video. I am looking at used tools as a starter, but why not make some of those classy anvils for sale...just sayin
For a time, I was selling my style of hornless anvil / swage block. But the shipping is high and margin low on such an item. And since getting these done involves so much back and forth between different companies, I found it was not worth the hassle. But so many people have inquired about my anvils that I will revisit this when I have time and see if I can work it out... Thanks for watching. Glen

In regards to the whole RUclips thing, I have noticed that RUclips unsubscribed me from a few channels that I hadn't been watching in a while. I suspect that this is part of the problem but I have also noticed that certain channels where I watch every single video weren't showing up in my feed so there are definitely problems. A lot of creators have had to resort to using Twitter and Facebook to notify everyone when a new video is posted.
Maybe I also need to use another way to inform those interested in new videos. I don't have Twitter or Facebook accounts but maybe it's time to start... I've heard so many people say they were involuntarily unsubscribed. I know it has to be a monumental job running RUclips and I expect issues but when you see numbers trending downward, it becomes a bit frustrating and I think especially for creators like myself who are putting out original content and not just regurgitating something they saw or stating their opinion about some news story. Glen GS Tongs I believe you can get software that will automatically post links and notifications to the social media sites of your choice. That would help take some of the burden off your shoulders. I agree it's a shame that RUclips seems to have altered things without disclosing the changes so everyone knows how to work with them. Keep up the great work, very inspiring to see craftsmanship like yours gaining popularity again.
"Grandadisanoldman" who is a prolific uploader whose channel I also watch, has recently discussed RUclips glitches. Don't really understand if it's a similar issue. Then on "Darbin Ovar" woodworking channel, today a subscriber was complaining of not getting her notifications of new videos when uploaded by Linn. Seems like there are a few bugs in the system at the moment, rather than a downturn in viewer activity.
I'm going to write it off as some sort of glitch in the system or maybe RUclips recalibrating the numbers (for whatever reason) and just keep doing my thing. I know I'm a small fish in this ocean and that others (who do this for a living) are impacted worse than I am. Thanks. Glen
Glen GS Tongs I think continue as before is a good philosophy because your regular subscribers give positive feedback or constructive suggestions that you can contemplate, and act on, if they have merit. RUclips as an organisation doesn't appear to have the "old style" of leadership that makes people feel directly involved in procedural changes.
This seems like it would be a good way to make a trivet as well. You tube must have removed some accounts, I find it hard to believe that 10%of your viewers left in the last week. Is there anything you miss from the states that you just can't get in Taiwan?
Michael, I thought the exact same thing as I was bending the arms. I thought about your question and can definitely say the thing I miss the most from the States is peace and quiet. Notwithstanding that I went from the country in the States to a big city here in Taiwan, people here are loud at all hours. I guess it doesn't help that I live on a busy road but overall, there's always someone creating some sort of noise. I might also add I miss having elbow room since there are people around you no matter here you go here. Thanks. Glen

by the way there has been a subscriber glitch going on where viewers are being auto unsubscribed for no reason. Skallagrim has had similar issues

Could have been peoples accounts getting removed for various reasons.
But I think I had some likes on some of my videos drop as well. And that was from like 3 to 1 or 2 lol.
They might have done a ban wave
I think that might be part of the issue - that RUclips is removing inactive accounts. It's not easy to build up a channel and I don't have any fantasies of being a RUclips sensation. I use it as a platform for my work and for that it's been helpful so I guess I shouldn't complain. Thanks for sharing. Glen
I made a video yesterday on forging my first attempt at a cross and it was a fun project!Mine didnt have the hole though because i guess i didnt cut into the other cut, but i did punch a small one in so it could be a on a necklace ( a lil heavy but oh well lol)

Ken, No problem - I don't mind constructive criticism. I really feel compelled to explain a lot and I know that might be off-putting to a lot of folks.
