    I had tears in my eyes when Sonny handed over "Well Wishing" money to the elders to show his respect . I wish I still have my parents to repeat of doing so. I remembered long ago each Tet I wished my parents with the red envelopes that content some money, we called " Longevity ' gift . Each year I noticed more gray on my parent's hair. Memories can last forever, so for whom still have your parents, cherish these moments while you can....
    Happy New Year !!!

      Y Kal Thank you, btw
      It hit me hard to see more wrinkles when my parents smiled . Yet, I never forgot those smiles somehow they expressed more kindness with each year went by... Lol . Would I be like that when I get older ? I'm wondering

    3 videos over 3 days of Tet covering 3 regions of Vietnam. Awesome concept Sonny but even better is the execution of all 3 videos. Somewhere out there is a course on media at some university that is using you as an example of how to do it right. I just feel bad for those students after seeing your videos in class though as they will go out and wolf down a big mac.

      It always drove me nuts when I was in the Navy that we would go to all of these new and interesting places in Asia and all over the Pacific and my shipmates would just look for the closest McDonald's or anything like it for food. I had to drag guys to different restaurants to try the local cuisine. And for the most part, they were always glad I did.
      Except durian. We all really regretted trying durian.

    I'm happy that you called Tet "Lunar new year" instead of "Chinese new year". "Chinese new year" is a very biased way to talk about Tet because not only the Chinese people celebrate it but also many other asian countries' people do. I don't like whenever any foreigners call Tet "Chinese new year" because that makes me think by default, they mean only the Chinese people have Tet.

    • @christineteehee

    Fun fact: The bitter melon in southern Vietnamese is homophone with "to overcome miserable". So southern Vietnamese eat it with the hope of overcoming all the miserable in the new year. The northern Vietnamese people dont call bitter melon as the southern people so northerners do not usually eat it in Tet

Your professional inspiration helped me gain a better understanding of how important it is to achieve not only a medical degree on hand but also the paralleled compassion that you share with your patients. It's so admirable beyond words... I hope you enjoyed your time off to balance it out , please accept my New Year best wishes to your entire family.

    Sonny, "Bánh Tét" is different from "Tết"
    Same Americanzied pronunciations but they're written differently in Vietnamese.

    Just a note though, when in Asia, if you are giving an elder person a gift, always use both hands to hand the gift. Using one hand is disrespectful.🙂

    It's not dying art. In United States, Cambodians make these all the time during holidays and funeral ceremonies.

    • @BlazingHeaven
      @BlazingHeaven 6 лет назад +5

      They're not Banh Tet. They're Zongzi ( called Nom Chang in Cambodia ). They can be made in any shape, wrapped in any kind of leaves and is way more easy to make.

    • @nightowlpiont1
      @nightowlpiont1 6 лет назад +1

      Hoàng Nguyễn Phạm Minh I don't think op meant "nom chang". Pretty sure he/she knows the difference. Cambodians cook it exactly the same way. Same ingredients and same method of cooking.

      Hoàng Nguyễn Phạm Minh Lol Nhoam chahng is different than nhoam sahm chrook. yeee me lawp yooorn nee!

    • @BlazingHeaven
      @BlazingHeaven 6 лет назад +4

      If you used to try both, you can tell the difference. Chinese in my country make Zongzi on Zhongxiao Festival. As I'm living near a Chinese district, I usually have it for breakfast at that time of the year. I also tried what you mentioned during my trip to Cambodia last year and it was just Cambodian style Zongzi. It doesn't have the unique smell of Banh Tet and tastes completely different. They even altered many ingrendients to their liking.

    • @nightowlpiont1
      @nightowlpiont1 6 лет назад +1

      Hoàng Nguyễn Phạm Minh I guess you've tried the lesser version from whatever place you ate at whilst in Cambodia.
