Sabbath is not Sunday, Sabbath is Saturday, the 7th day of the week. Catholic Church changed the solemnity of the sabbath to Sunday with the help of Emperor Constantine during 3rd centuries, not according to bible but it’s own power. Good morning Reverend. The act of Sunday morning worship- to be dovetailed into a holy and sanctimonious approach to life and work- has never been spelt out by the MarThoma church. Sunday - or Sabbath worship- has been reduced to a set of rituals and where pomp and ceremony override spiritual worship- has been the norm for decades, now. The command structure of the MarThoma Church- or its hierarchy- is now geared to making money, developing “vertically” rather than “horizontally”, inclusion, brotherhood and forgiveness having gone for a toss, is what we get to see nowadays. That the former “Spiritual Leader” during his 13 year old reign, damaged the MarThoma Church almost permanently, is something the laity needs to ponder about . Our idea of holiness and perfection in our work- needs both introspection and a calibrated view of spirituality. We need ask ourselves as to where we are going and whether the means justify the ends. This crucial test is something most of us don’t apply in our lives. What rules most of us- including the white cassock donning clergy and the red gowned specimens also called bishops- is expediency. The truer measure of “success” is the amount of expediency applied to it. I personally know diocesan bishops who have allowed clergy to change the minutes of Executive committed / general body meetings, to suit a moment / decision that might go against them if a “course correction” in the form of an illegal change of minutes does not take place. So the holy aspect of work - to be connected with worship- is distinctly missing . The covid contagion has taught us the hypocrisy of structure and worship- God Almighty has showed us that it is still possible to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth- sans the structures, Sans the gowns and the pomp and ceremony. Good morning Reverend. The act of Sunday morning worship- to be dovetailed into a holy and sanctimonious approach to life and work- has never been spelt out by the MarThoma church. Sunday - or Sabbath worship- has been reduced to a set of rituals and where pomp and ceremony override spiritual worship- has been the norm for decades, now. The command structure of the MarThoma Church- or its hierarchy- is now geared to making money, developing “vertically” rather than “horizontally”, inclusion, brotherhood and forgiveness having gone for a toss, is what we get to see nowadays. That the former “Spiritual Leader” during his 13 year old reign, damaged the MarThoma Church almost permanently, is something the laity needs to ponder about .
Our idea of holiness and perfection in our work- needs both introspection and a calibrated view of spirituality. We need ask ourselves as to where we are going and whether the means justify the ends. This crucial test is something most of us don’t apply in our lives. What rules most of us- including the white cassock donning clergy and the red gowned specimens also called bishops- is expediency. The truer measure of “success” is the amount of expediency applied to it. I personally know diocesan bishops who have allowed clergy to change the minutes of Executive committed / general body meetings, to suit a moment / decision that might go against them if a “course correction” in the form of an illegal change of minutes does not take place. So the holy aspect of work - to be connected with worship- is distinctly missing .
The covid contagion has taught us the hypocrisy of structure and worship- God Almighty has showed us that it is still possible to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth- sans the structures, Sans the gowns and the pomp and ceremony.
