    The big issue I have with Strafe is that it looks less like actual Quake and more like a Minecrafty faux-throwback by some #90skid born in 1999. Should've built it on some form of the Quake engine.

      I was amazed he had that much patience with him. It was a little funny at first, but my patience really wears thin on people who don't shut the fuck up on the mic with non-stop bitching about pointless shit. I would have TK'd him very quickly into the second round. Or maybe if I was having a particularly good day, muted him and not used a flashlight. And you could tell at least half the team picked flashlights just to piss him off after the first round too.

    The sad thing about the cancellation of Prey 2 is the game wasn't cancelled during early development. In fact, it was so near the completion that Steam achievements were already implemented and they are still there. Bethesda, bunch of bloody twats...

    It was surprisingly satisfying seeing that guy who kept whining about people with flashlights getting teamkilled, especially after seeing him kill 2 friendlies before that. That alone made this video worth watching.

    As acerbic as your commentary is, you are honest and I always appreciate that. I always love watching your videos when they pop up in my feed. I'm replaying System Shock 2 (for the umpteenth time) with a crapton of mods and I'm loving it.
    I love RO2: Vietnam, whenever I can actually play it. Tripwire needs to bugfix that game pronto. I get stupid bugsplat errors no matter how many times I verify the cache, delete certain folders* (and verify the cache for the umpteenth time after that) and uninstall the damn thing. It's one of the few games where I can get my commie killing fix, dammit! (Besides World In Conflict and BF1's In the Name of the Tsar DLC).
    *Tripwire actually recommended that.

      Why do all the best games never run right?

    • @Bugga451
      @Bugga451 6 лет назад +1

      I know right? I'll continue to scour the internet, beg Tripwire by way of suppprt tickets and bugsplat reports until it consistently runs without a hitch.
      Because that game is just my kind of game.
      EDIT: Also, Insurgency and Day of Infamy are fun games even if the community is cancer from time to time. For every game that's full of neutral or reasonable people, there's the people who are walking 4chan stereotypes or people who take playing seriously to a dangerously stupid level (at least in my experience)

    While System Shock 2 is my favorite 0451 game, I enjoyed Prey for what it is, a good clone. Also what is that story about a robot lady that wishes to destroy the station? The Shodan Vs The Many conflict isn't reproduced in the game at all. There is no female AI in the game IIRC.

    I really like channel. I discovered it while overseas running night duty. I was searching for WM4 play-throughs for the nostalgia after watching a bunch of MWO streamers to get a fix for one of my favorite gaming genres. I appreciated your history of MW segment which was much more insightful than any of the little, to nonexistent, to outright annoying, commentary on the actual play through vids I found. Fingers crossed for MW5 Mercs. If it works it will combine my two favorite things: stompy robots and the coop play I fell in love with in system shock 2 that no one ever duplicated to my satisfaction. Cheers.

    Ahh Insurgency, I remember this one time back when it first came out, I accidently TK'd this guy and he literally threw an autistic sperg rage on text chat, once he had the ability to go back on voice chat, he started berating me and I shit you not, intentionally Tk'd me afterwards. Day of Infamy? If I had a dollar for everytime a server picked Dog Red.
    Also I agree totally with your rant on Bethesda's Prey, the game infuriates me to no end because of Prey 2's unfortunate demise, I love how people give it a free pass because of how similar it is to System Shock. I know for a fucking fact that Bethesda's Prey was already in development way before it was even announced, Bethesda just cancelled Prey 2 and just told Harvey Smith, hey just use this title as your own so we don't have to spend money on trademarking shit.

    glad I'm not the only one that likes those 20 round AR mags. There's just something cool about them. Also I like how it keeps the profile of the rifle down to the pistol grip. People love extended tacticool shit on their ARs because they like to imagine themelves in WROLSHTFLARP fantasies, but in reality having a carbine that's quick to grab and easy to maneuver around corners is more important if you are a civilian.

    I played maybe an hour of Prey 2017. I loved SS2, thought Bioshock was okay. I thought Prey was some seriously boring shit, but I don't think it's because it was an SS2 clone. I can't pin down what precisely was getting on my nerves. Some amount of it was that faux Bad Robot aesthetic they pull in the beginning. They also decided to revive the Bioshock tendency of saying something vague, and then dancing around excited saying "THAT'S GONNA BE IMPORTANT LATER! IT'S GONNA BE DEEEEP!" that forces an eye roll. Not sure if I'll ever care enough to pinpoint exactly what about it bothered me.

    I'm a glutton for exploration and in a bout of irony playing a superdude tacticurt in a Bolivia taken over by a drug cartel made me REALLY want to visit the real Bolivia. The things I remember about the game all have to do with the natural environment or the explore-y bits - like Hans Barbie's fucking house. I love that kind of shit. It also had bullet drop which took me by surprise and made me realize how much the new Far Cry took from Wildlands. I think somebody at Ubisoft was infinitely more enamored with Wildlands than the rest of the gaming world because that's the particular flavor of Ubisoft open world they've been cooking up since its release. It's basically Mercenaries.

Still it's actually a proper rip-off of old school fps instead of hack job from hacks like "Flying Wild Hog", by turning everything into lame Serous Sam clone and calling it an old school experience like Shadow Warrior or Bethestas nu"Doom".

    I've never played a Destiny game in my life, but all I can say is, it's a perfect example of how internet reaction can often be unrepresentative of the average reaction of the people who play it. I feel relatively safe in saying the most prevalent sentiment you hear about Destiny was/is, it's not bad, it's actually decent, but I expected much more so I'm disappointed. Disappointment is the most common thing you hear attached to Destiny in online fan reviews. Perhaps that was the true general consensus, but then why did Destiny 2 sell so well? Yeah, they had a huge marketing budget, yeah when the first game sells so well you're going to generate a certain amount of sales for the sequel even if it's an awful game. It had the PC release too. But, there's just no way that many people were disappointed with the first Destiny as the internet would have you believe. It was the 2nd best selling game of 2017 and has outperformed the original. That just plain doesn't happen if the majority of folks who played it found it disappointing. A lot of people were happy with Destiny, probably a majority of them. And they're not all below the age of 18 either. Maybe it was the higher critic reviews that prompted people to look at it more negatively to sort of even it out?
    It's not perfect at all, but voting with your wallet is sometimes a more accurate way to gauge reactions. People are way too prone to just latching onto the early and popular sentiment online and often times it creates inaccurate ideas of fan reaction. I totally get people not liking the Destiny games and voicing their opinions, but I also think there's a drive to control the reaction to what people want it to be since reaction impacts what kind of games are made. Not nearly as much as sales, but it is a huge factor. If you hate Destiny and want to see other types of games made instead, you're probably pretty happy the first thing your hear when you bring up a Destiny game is, wow, what a let down. But it certainly seems like a lot less people were disappointed with the game than you would think hearing opinions online. I'm not saying this is nefarious or some internet conspiracy to control games, just something people need to come to terms with. Just because the popular internet hang outs seem to be in consensus on a game, doesn't mean it's totally accurate of aggregate opinion of the people who played the game. It could be, it just isn't always the case. People treat Destiny as a game that was received somewhat poorly by the fans as a fact and that's just not true. Some prevailing opinions aren't prevailing at all, they're just propped up with a lot of noise combined with internet group think. Yuck, I hate using buzz phrases like group think, oh well. Also, this doesn't really have anything to do with your view on Destiny, just something I want to get off my chest because it happens with other games and it's getting worse. Sorry for the rant.

      When you go up against the Chinese, you'll either get instakilled by somebody with an aimbot, or you'll wipe 'em without taking damage. It's a total crapshoot. :D

    Is it just me or did the whole "It's OK to be white" thing feel out of place? Or have I missed some controversy about Prey's main character?

    • @TheExaminedLifeofGaming
      @TheExaminedLifeofGaming  6 лет назад +2

      Much hay was made over the protagonist being Asian, which I think is pretty dumb since I'd rather focus on the protagonist being a shit character. Meanwhile the original Prey had a great main character, who was also a minority (although I think their race is secondary to them being a good character or not).

      OK. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I had missed the controversy about the main guy being asian. Sounds stupid as hell, but then again the gamer outrage machine is violently retarded.

    I cant agree with what you say about pubg i have put 300 hours into that game and owned it in the beta, and the game is almost all about luck, and maybe they are going with that, but it can be agonizing playing pubg when its slow, as in some games you arent fighting people you're fighting the game because you landed in a bad spot and now have to marathon across the map with terrible weapons and little meds all because rng said so, and the red zone is easily the worst part of the game, it just kills you, theres no point to it, you can hide but even then it might bug out and kill you anyway, and the bugs, i get that its in alpha but they are holding the game back big time.
    weapon balance is amazing, because everyone has preferences, you said the m416 is better than the m16, but to me the m16 has many more advantages and in my mind is the better weapon, and i have always liked the idea of high risk high reward guns from airdrops.

    THERE IS LITTERALLY NOTHING ROGUE LIKE ABOUT THE FIRST TITLE!! Where is my little @ hero and multi-coloroued P's for enemies? Randomly genererated does NOT fucking equate to "rogue like". I thought you knew this shit. But no - you do what Polygon does and start bleating about "roguelike" as soon as something is fucking randomly generated.
    It's like saying "Ultima Underworld" was a first person shooter because it "derp plays in first person". No. Stop.
    You know better and I expect more from you than random bullshit like the shit we get from outlets like IGN or Destructoid.

      @TheExaminedLifeofGaming  7 лет назад +3

      Wewlad, you having a hard day? Turn down the 'tism for a minute.
      Roguelike is more than ASCII. The modern rogue-lite style is about the semi-randomized progression system where you're not meant to beat it on one character. It's got the randomized layout, the permadeath, and the retreaux graphics. It's not ASCII but it fits the rest of the genre to a T.

    • @Modenut
      @Modenut 6 лет назад +1

      Sure, roguelike is more than ASCII. But ASCII is a pretty fucking integral part of it. Along with top down view and turn based combat.
      And yes - I did have a pretty shitty day. Thanks for asking. =)

      @TheExaminedLifeofGaming  6 лет назад +2

      I probably should have used the term "rogue-lite" which is more appropriate for the modern crop.

    *sigh*
    Good list but you really need to learn to use objective information instead of subjective opinions where possible. For example STALKER has only initial weapons being inaccurate as hell as it attempts a horrible weapon ladder system, but end game guns are very accurate. Less of an issue in Clear Sky but the damage and resistance values are wack there. CoP has it best but initial weapons instead get much higher recoil for no real reason (which is fixed with upgrading them but still is a silly design choice).
    The Prey thing... *sigh* America needs better literary education for sure. It is obviously very much a take on System Shock 2 but calling a game with different flow, mechanics, thematic core, plot, world building mechanics... a clone. Lol. Same for Bioshock...and Dead Space.

    • @TheExaminedLifeofGaming
      @TheExaminedLifeofGaming  6 лет назад +3

      All weapons in STALKER have the same form of inaccuracy. Instead of sight sway, they use built in randomization. That's one approach to handling weapon accuracy. Another is the BiA method of having accurate guns with lots of sight sway. The final method is the "who gives a shit" method of making guns accurate and sight sway virtually nonexistent (a la Day of Infamy).
      It's illustrative; the varying accuracy levels of different weapon tiers in STALKER does not change the underlying mechanic: that of a weapon's accuracy stat determining where the boolits go when you shoot, instead of requiring the player to do all the work themselves. There's nothing subjective about it.
      And Prey 2017 is absoLUTELY a clone of 'Shock. The "flow" is the same (unlocking new areas, moving between levels, eventually opening up the elevator to allow for faster travel, progression of enemies, plot, weapons, and abilities). The mechanics are the same (similar combat/tech/psi skill trees, similar method to "gate" progress based on which tree you pick). The plot and "thematic core" are even the same (amnesiac main character, infestation picked up from alien planet, helpful robot, ambiguous villain). Prey is a finely mixed blend of the three 'Shock games. It's not exactly like any one of them, but it IS exactly like all three of them.

    • @CharcharoExplorer
      @CharcharoExplorer 6 лет назад +1

      Have you actually seen the way accuracy works in STALKER? That is an oversimplification if I have ever seen one, so much so that it doesnt really do the game justice. Also video games arent usually made in this modular fashion you describe where we lift a "underlying mechanic" and toss it somewhere else. And again - high end guns in STALKER are *REALLY* accurate. Considering the engagement ranges of the game, a good condition high end Warsaw or Russian or NATO gun will kill anything up to any range that the player can realistically engage in and fast. And upgraded? Using weapons like the VSS... it becomes unfair.
      Its just so... naive. Hell the same way you didnt recognize STALKER's influence on other games and community or how Metro 2033 and Last Light are basically RTCW/Half Life type games (closer than Prey 2017 is to System Shock id even wager, at least with RTCW).
      I played System Shock 2 again last year, and no what you are describing is not how those games work. First off, thematic core is not muh most basic plot elements, it is what the story is about on a thematic level. As in the tier above plot, characters, and equal to "point". What you are describing is both setting and plot/setup. With all due respect, those can be copied ad nausea and still lead to different works of art. As for the gameplay part id wager that due to the higher degree of close object inspection and physics in-engine (due to technology), Prey 2017 has a different flow of gameplay. Think of it as the difference between DOOM 3 and Half-Life 1, that should be a reasonable analogy.
      And I dont defend the game because I love it all that much. I thought it was pretty good but my FPS GOTY was Wolfenstein 2, warts and all. Not even disagreeing with your analysis on its faults... but this rubs me the wrong way. Games are an art form, we must treat them as such.

    • @TheExaminedLifeofGaming
      @TheExaminedLifeofGaming  6 лет назад +2

      Like I said, even the accurate guns have the same type of accuracy calculations. They do not have reduced muzzle sway to make them more accurate, they just shoot to a smaller cone of accuracy.
      I'm also not sure where I denied STALKER's influence on the industry. Can you cite a source there?
      Lastly: games are not art. There's no such thing as art. Get over yourself.

    • @CharcharoExplorer
      @CharcharoExplorer 6 лет назад

      No such thing as art? What kind of shit tier backwater school... ugh. No wonder Muricastan has SJWs and aSJWs running in the streets talking BS, its the entire education system ruining the people long term. Same shit is slowly happening here.
      In your PC Gamer Top 50 list or something. I am going off memory. I corrected you a lot there.
      And no, oversimplifications aren't good. And that is not what you even said in the video either. Either you didnt express yourself well there... or we have a failure of communication on that specific topic here in the comments. IDK.

      The choice to make Alex asian in Prey doesn't seem to be motivated by a desire to make the character interesting, but rather to just have more minority representation.
      I don't care if Alex is Asian, I just want the character to be interesting. And Alex isn't nearly as interesting as Tommy from Prey 1.
