If he had said "I lost my wife 2 years ago and got married again last year," it could just as well be that he lost his wife in december and got married next month. At the age this man is at, people tend to rush decisions like this on account of their fear of time passing.

    I almost didn't watch this one, since it was so long, but I am glad I did! This was probably the most fascinating SE I've ever seen. I can see why you are a little self-deprecating in the blurb above, since David didn't make any progress in evaluating his own beliefs, but it was a fascinating discussion nonetheless. He had a stock response for every single question, even if his answer didn't begin to address the question you had posed. I felt like I could make a bingo card of logical fallacies and fill the whole board by the time your talk was finished. I realized at about 45:00 that you kept calmly and respectfully coming back to some version of the essential question, "Would that be a good method for determining if it (the claim in question) is true?" I picked up on that when he started to leave and you asked that question for something like the 4th or 5th time. But you weren't confrontational or rude - just inquisitive.
    So I kept watching and things really got interesting. The whole "deconfirmation" thing really turned this conversation into SE dynamite. And then this very lovely, gentle, pleasant man stopped making sense. And when you asked him, "Why do you think the Ark wasn't filled with babies?" you could almost see his foundations tremble. You're good. I'm glad I found this SE channel.

      1) Thought Crimes: Anger, Lust, Coveting. These are the main reason why no human escapes without sin, as it is nearly impossible to avoid any of these if not all of them. If you anger, you commit murder in your heart (Jesus and turning over the money changer's tables in the temple), if you want something someone else owns, you covet, committing theft in your heart (Jesus "needing" the mother and colt before coming into the city. He couldn't walk?), and if you lust, you commit adultery in your heart (Jesus was a male even though thoughts of lust were not mentioned in the NT, so no escaping this one). If Jesus was 100% human, then he should be responsible for these very human sins.

The philosophical "nothing" that professional apologists use, is projecting Christian beliefs onto atheists. The philosophical "nothing" that everything came from is actually the same "nothing" that Christians believe existed before god spoke it into existence. When physicists use the word "nothing" they are talking about an entirely different usage of the word. My evidence of that is his constant use of canned platitudes and sayings pulled from the bible that often don’t even map to the question posed. His answers to questions must come from the sayings he’s learned and memorized from the bible and not from introspection and logical deductions.

While I can't attest to the soundness of the teachings contained in it, at least when speaking with a devout Muslim, they will most likely actually KNOW their book thoroughly.

  • @Evimogwai

    An idea that could have helped with the defensiveness, would it be useful to acknowledge that the belief itself isn't under attack? Something like "oh, no I'm not trying to make you question your faith, I'm just trying to find out the underlying method..."
    And/or validating that you've heard their belief early on?
    A lot of cults (and quite some churches) use the tactic of equating questioning with attack which can put people in defensive mode and lock down both in the moment but also later.
    Reassuring them might help keep the window open a little longer

    • @deepdiscussions5728
      @deepdiscussions5728  5 лет назад

      That seems like lying. Focusing on the method helps to foster openness, but if doing so causes doubt, and therefore some defensiveness, there’s not much you can do. Maybe something like this. “I’m not trying to prove your belief wrong. I’m trying to see if the way you reached your conclusion is reliable, and if not, is there a more reliable method we could use.”

    • @Evimogwai
      @Evimogwai 5 лет назад

      @@deepdiscussions5728 You might be right, I'm not well versed in the applications of the method. I'm more familiar with other active inquiry methods, where validation is commonly a tool to establish safety, and help put posturing needs to rest.
      Also, I'm not implying lying, you could change the words in any way as long as you reassure what is being questioned and what is not.
