I grew up in Hawaii, graduated high school and college in Hawaii, and live in Hawaii now. I believe in 100% of the graduations the traditional Flower Leis are given to the graduate AFTER THE CEREMONY. The grad gets diploma then walks back to stand for the rest of the grads to get their diplomas. Then after the ceremony was completed the grads went to the pre-designated areas, usually marked by the first letter of last name, and all of the family and friends met them there to give the leis, gifts, envelopes, and congratulations. That is the normal everyday procedure of any graduation ceremony that I ever went to or participated in while living and growing up in Hawaii.
I wore my salutatorian and honours regalia during the ceremonies of high school and university graduation. If the lei is a symbol of accomplishment then it should be worn at the ceremony like any other honour symbol. Thank God, I wasn’t forced to walk across a stage to receive my merited awards.
After graduation, yes, many schools in Hawai'i don't allow gift leis to be worn before. It's a celebration of graduation. The student hasn't graduated yet.
RIDICULOUS! EASTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL is very diverse and the students have been able to wear their cultural adornments for YEARS. The two women shown in the video chose to be rigid and mean spirited because there is ALWAYS room for flexibility.RIDICULOUS and shameful.Additionally , of ALL ethnicities are seen wearing Leis because they’re beautiful adornments.
Yes, in Hawaii, it's a tradition to give graduates leis after the graduation ceremony. This cultural tradition has been practiced for over a century and is a way for locals to show their pride in graduates and to practice their lei-making skills. After the ceremony, friends and family gather around the graduate and adorn them with leis. Leis can be made from flowers, kukui nuts, shells, ti leaves, or maile, and sometimes money. Some people customize their leis with ribbons and ties that match the graduate's school colors. It's not uncommon for graduates to have so many leis around their neck that they can no longer see. Parents often need to help carry some of the lei. Giving a lei is a way to show support for the graduate, to congratulate them on their academic accomplishments, and to express best wishes for their future endeavors. It's also a wish for good luck and to show the graduate how much they are loved and appreciated. In Hawai‘i, lei are given after the graduation ceremony is complete - primarily because it isn’t just immediate family that gifts a graduate with lei. Extended family and friends like to get in on the action, too. In fact, within an hour or so, it isn’t uncommon for graduates to have lei piled as high as the top of their head. In other parts of the country, though, lei traditionally are given after a graduate has donned their graduation robe and regalia before the ceremony begins. This also could come down to dress code, with some schools preferring their graduating class to have a uniform look.
Yeah, she won because she stood up for herself, but in this case it’s still feels like a loss because she should have been allowed to just walk with this lei instead of having this pointless conversation and argument about oh you can’t wear this to graduation. So I don’t know in someways it’s a win because she did stand up for herself, but it’s a loss because she didn’t get to walk and on top of that the school district didn’t discipline their staff or fire them.
Where was the Principal that gave approval? They should have been at the event and called in to take care of this situation before it escalated. Also, the school should call back this student and hold a ceremony for her while she's wearing her lei.
Lawsuit! Lawsuit! Absolutely not just for the compensation but to send a message. I work at a school and I know how some of these knucklehead admits on a power trip can act. This was already permitted and allowed by the principal. Those dummies who gave the family an ultimatum like that should be fired!
I feel really bad for this girl. I mean it’s too bad. She didn’t have any official paperwork with all the signatures of the board of education and superintendent as well I think saying that she was allowed to do this. This is terrible. I cannot believe that the staff member stopped her from doing this and that her family had to go through this and basically stand up for her, which I’m very proud of them, but and her for standing up for herself, and for not letting you know, people squash her like an ant.
