    Paul Atreides is perhaps the biggest villain in the story, although the Bene Gesserit are ultimately responsible. He knows from prescient vision that resolving his vendetta against the Harkonnen will unleash a jihad that will kill billions of people. He is the ultimate tragic hero and his fate doesn't get any better in the following two books.

    I loved the 2nd film but I had a problem with how quick it was between the time Paul was found by the Fremen and when Paul becomes the contested emperor. A lot of that time was about Alia being born and her life in the Sietch with Leto I living and dying. Still though, Herbert's disdain for religion still shines through and Paul's role is intact. While many consider Paul an anti-hero, I consider him an anti-villain. Great movie. It's this generation "Lord of the Rings". We need Dune Messiah. I'm old so hopefully Denis won't wait too long. .

    My only problem with part 2 is the timeline. In the books it took 5-10 years between the fall of House Atreides, and Paul taking on the Emperor. I get not wanting to using a child for that 1 scene, but less than 9 months to do everything he had to do, doesn’t work.

      No culture is monolithic, not even the most fanatical. There's always some diversity of opinion and beliefs, although sometimes those who think differently are forced to hide it from others. Remember Dune takes place in the far future, despite the feudal sytem of the Empire being similar to Earth's ancient past. Chany and her companions had access to lots of information in filmbooks and they lived close to Arrakeen, the cosmopolitan planetary capital in the northern hemisphere of Arrakis. Besides, imperial ecologist turned Fremen leader Liet Kynes was very aware of how the different factions in power operated.

    • @marknovak6498
      @marknovak6498 7 месяцев назад

      @@matiasdevaglia4541 But a culture under siege would not have an urban sensibility. On top of that, the spice agony was separated from the tribal orgy, it was an event that tied in with that unified the culture. One of the book's subtext was that this people were unified so much as a tribal culture. The director misses the book's point when introducing the culture that was divided so radically as it was unified over centuries. I had the privilege of speaking with the author when I was in college and taking a culture to the extreme was the point of many of the groups represented.

    Also, as far as the music, Hans Zimmerman is amazing! I loved his work on Wonder Woman 1984, which really helped it to feel like it had a lot after Christmas lore. I lived seeing on Christmas 2020, since they had to move it from its original June release date.
    Everyone hated the plot, mostly because it has two villains and an incoherent plot. And it was sad to see that the music couldn’t save it.
    But when you have an epically written and directed movie like Dine, the music really makes it shine. I especially loved the music when Paul started riding the worm. He proved he could succeed and do great things. 😊

    5:28 YES!!! I HATE that most movies do this nowadays!! Every moment that could be noble and grand and a moment for oohs and aahs, they have to slap down with a joke. Marvel is an especially guilty of this recently.
    I WANT the noble, chilling, slow-motion-walk moment! DON’T RUIN IT! I don’t care if these “hip“ “meta“ directors think it’s cool to fourth wall break and point out that every noble moment could be seen as cheesy. Stop fucking ruining the moment.
    And boy, Dune part two is just full of unadulterated, glorious “noble moments”. The moment of the worm ride, Paul’s multiple slow motion walks across the sand, his slow turn and stare right after he’s been resurrected, and many more. They just let the music swell and let the moment be chill-inducing, without a record scratch sound and a joke. Thank God.

    The book ruined the movie for me... FInished the book a week before watching dune 2 and every time the movie deviated from the book it left me feeling... so weird.
    The changes make sense, yes, but every change comes at a cost and it just left me wondering wtf was that cost, what was sacrificed? Some were clear. Chani and Jessica's relationship, Paul and Jessica's motherly love for him, Chani and Paul's future...
    The vision of the future does not seem clear any more to me, the reader of the book. (Ha!)
    Other changes are... I dont know... Thufir, Gurney v. Jessica, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the baron...
    These are not important to advancing the main story, but it felt reductive to the characters and whatever Frank Herbert was trying to tell with them.

I can't remember since I read it back in like 1992, but this felt off to me. At this point, Paul had been trained by some of the best warriors in the empire and he had seen some combat himself, so why would he be so sloppy in a combat situation?
