More or less true. But after taking a lot of pictures with my camera, I can definitely recognise it's colors and grain between other cameras. If you prefer colors from a certain camera, it's less work to do in the post processing.

Not true at all not if you're an actual photographer you can see the difference in the punch of colors and how it handled Sky slightly different and slight Warmness. Helps when the younger generation of photographers actually spend some time looking at photo history

Over the Jpegs, I've also only picked 2 canon, but only 3 classics chrome which I've used the most ever since my switched and the rest provia.... It definitely deserved more of our usage other than classics chrome.. Thanks for the heads up @Denae & Andrew

As a Fuji shooter, I picked Canon colours for all raw images and most of jpegs, which actually makes me consider switching to Canon. There is definitely a difference. Another note is that Canon's raw images render the subjects on focus in the foreground lighter whilst rendering the objects in the background darker compare to Fuji which does the opposite.

Canon and Nikon have the best color sciences of all the popular brands in my opinion (but are behind Hasselblad and the Leica flagship cameras). Canon renders skin tones in a very pleasing way. Carl Zeiss and Leica lenses have wonderful colors when the lighting is good. Fuji has the film simulations and nice retro design look. You can always adjust the colors if you have a good and calibrated monitor.

I was able to pick out the canons by the yellow hues that push towards orange. It makes for nice skin tones which I think is the reason so many people think of Canon as portrait/people cameras. With that said, there's no reason you couldn't make a really similar color profile and apply it to all the Fuji images to get the exact same look.

I used to shoot Nikon, then Canon, now Fuji. I think all three are perfectly acceptable (and in this case, both Canon and Fuji mirrorless.) But I am surprised by how subtle the differences were to me in viewing the RAW images. I do love Provia and shoot it as a standard in my Fuji jpegs. But it just goes to show you how good modern cameras are across the board.

I have used Fuji for about 3 years now , several times I have considered Sony or Cannon full frame cameras with higher megapixel counts . Then I see someone do a simple but effective comparison and once again I’m sold on Fuji, their jpegs are without a rival and I believe their color science is just more natural to what our eye actually sees. Also so far I have found no legitimate reason to go to full frame , the performance I get from Fuji is more than adequate. Nice video thanks

What most people never consider is how the lenses also resolve color. Most people aren't aware that the glass on your camera can also favor certain colors in the spectrum of light before it even reaches the sensors. I've not seen one review that ever talks about this.

Loved this test! I was giddy as a schoolgirl when I saw it in my feed and it didn't disappoint. I'm also very happy my results were much closer to 50-50 than I expected. I thought canon would win but there was no real winner between provia and canon. Which is great news because I recently switched from canon to fuji even though I thought I loved canon colors more. Thanks so much for this comparison. Also: you dont talk to much. Sorry if I ruined your day by saying that 😊

Here is the breakdown: On the RAW test I chose the Canon Lightroom capture almost exclusively (7 choices) with the only exceptions being Canon Capture 1 (2 choices) and 3 other images undecided. On the JPG test Fuji Provia lead the pack (5 choices) followed by Canon Standard (3 choices), Fuji Classic Chrome (1 choice) and 4 undecided.

Been thinking about switching from my Canon RP to a Fuji. Mainly the X100V or X-E4. I think I’ve gotten bored with the full frame look and design/controls of the Canon... Even though it’s big, the lenses are still huge and it feels like a chore bringing it. Do you think this jump is reasonable and will be refreshing and worth the “hassle”?

I knew I was going to pick mostly Fuji especially for skintones. Haha. I'm a Canon user, but I've already accepted the fact that Fuji has one of the most interesting and attractive color science in the market (at least, IMO). Surprisingly though, in this test, I actually picked Canon where it matters to me, like in the photos where there are reds and blues. The color of the sky is also important to me, and in my eyes, I think Canon rendered the most natural sky color. So, well, thank God or else, I would be asking myself everyday if I should jump to Fujifilm. Lol

After checking 3 sets of jpg, it's quite obvious to me B is CC(faded color) ; C is provia(strong contrast and saturation); A is canon(less contrast). What I've noticed with Canon images that I've shot over the years is that I seldom need to adjust the jpegs, they just come out of the camera looking good. I like the sharpness of the images I shoot with my Fuji cameras, but I find I need to use raw images and spend a lot of time adjusting the colors to get what I want. In particular, I wind up with skies that are too light, too turquoise, with Fuji. The Canon skies always look just right color-wise. And with Sony I've noticed the skies being blown out if there are any clouds in the frame. Nikon color tends to be a bit cooler than Canon, which is better for skin tones since Canon tends to be oversaturated, too red or yellow. But, for shots without people, I like Canon's punched-up color, it's like Kodachrome. Nikon color is good, but more like Ektachrome. Sony color is hit or miss and tricky to adjust. I wish I could find all the characteristics I like in one camera. I have too many cameras, but I've more or less settled on Nikon. I like their bodies and lenses, but would love to have the fully articulated screens on them.

As a Canon shooter considering to switch to Fuji, I have some remarks.
    Regarding the RAW comparison.
    ..
    - Have I spotted the Canon colors in each pair? Sure did!
    - Would I choose the Canon over Fuji? In Lightroom, Canon is clearly wining. In Capture 1, Fuji looks way better but isn't necessarily better looking than Canon, maybe different, in a good way !
On the other hand, I was surprised about the JPG's. The Fuji Provia is as much as enjoyable as the Canon Standard, both with it's own flavor!
I always shoot RAW, because I like to manipulate my photos, but I really consider the Fuji system for those great JPG's straight out of the camera.

I was about to get a Fujifilm as my first serious camera because of the spec and its form, then I found this video.
Like 90% of raw images, I prefer the Canon ones. For JPG images, I like Fuji Provia and Canon. It's quite clear at this point that I might prefer Canon over Fujifilm.
I went to the store and tested them both Canon and Fujifilm in real life. It just confirms that I prefer the Canon colors.
With my noob amateur eyes, I found Fujifilm has a slightly cool magenta-ish tint on it while Canon is more toward a warm yellow orangy boost which is more flattering to my eyes.
Thank you for making this video. It helped me pick my first camera 🙏.

Very interesting. The results of the test were exactly what I expected for me. I preferred the Fuji Lightroom file 8 to 5 and the Fuji capture one file 8 to 5. For jpegs I classic chrome won out with provia second and canon last. This is exactly what I thought my preference was.
I started on a Canon t3 and moved to an Xpro 1 initially back when it released. Switched to a 5d classic before upgrading to 5d mk iii. For years After that I bounced back and forth between more Fuji (xe 1 and 2 and xt1), Sony A7 1, X100 and x100s, Nikon d750, rx1, and now I shoot a7 iii and X100F. Fuji colors always kept me coming back even though the af performance left something to be desired for what I shoot. Now that they might be good enough (xt3) I’m thinking of coming back but the a7 iii performance is just so good it never lets me down even though I don’t enjoy shooting it and I’m not a fan of processing their files to my taste as compared to almost straight out of camera for my X100F. I don’t do paid shoots anymore, mostly for documenting family so the Fuji line is really tempting me again. Decisions decisions.

Btw, I really love the waulity aspect of your pictures. Great work !

Great video Andrew. Raw 14 Fuji, 12 Canon but frankly in Raw it is as you said irrelevant really. Jpegs were more interesting as like yourself I shoot Jpeg with Raw back up for the times when I haven’t got more important things to do like be with my family. So basically hardly ever. This was quite interesting as I choose 2 Canon and Fuji 6 CC and 5 Provia. I thought it would have been closer but as I am so happy with Fuji jpegs I will carry on getting joy from my photography side by side with my family and not repeat the selfish isolated life I had when I didn’t value what I has around me, my wife children and grand children. Who better to be kind to before cameras.

Great experiment. I shoot Fuji, but only for the last few months. Before then it was an old Nikon D40X at home and Canons for work. It was hard to get out of my head and try to not think about which brand was which while going through this, but many of them were very similar.
I also think what you shoot plays into this. I love the high contrast I get with the Fuji- but I mostly shoot landscape and travel shots. I like the softness of Canon portraits a lot- and I would probably lean in that direction if I did a lot of wedding and family photos.

For me, Fuji really shows a nice contrast in SOOC JPEG files when compared to Canon (as seen in this video). As if Fujifilm adds a tonal curve (S-curve) to their JPEG files, which I like.

I was all over the board. Raw, A-6 B-7 C-5 D-6. JPG, A-7 B-2 C-4. It was hard to just focus on the color for me, as the sharpness interfered with my brain. So, focus is important to a photo. Very good test!

I only did the JPEG comparisons and I picked almost an even number of each. I shoot Canon and have not shot with a Fuji. When shooting jpegs with my Canon cameras the picture style I use the most is Faithful, especially for portraits. I suspect that if you had done this test with Canon Faithful rather than Canon Standard, it would have been extremely hard to see any difference between the Canon and the Fuji. Canon Standard tends to render reds a reddish-orange. Canon Faithful is much more a true red, with no orange tinge. For this reason I use Faithful much more and it seems more similar to the Fuji red to me. ALSO ... which Canon body and lens did you use? I have several Canon bodies, both FF and crop, and the colors are a little different coming from each body. From your jpeg samples I chose Canon for every portrait image. Love the skin tones, looked more natural to me than the Fuji skin tones. Fuji is a great camera I'm sure, but after watching your video I can say, for portraits at least, I still prefer Canon. And my itch to try Fuji has subsided a bit.

Make sure you have COLOUR-CALIBRATED YOUR DISPLAY and have set the white balance, contrast and brightness appropriate to your current room lighting! (I can't believe they didn't say that in the video!) Also, if you hit pause on RUclips, it changes the tones whilst the menu is up, until it goes away after a few seconds of resuming playing. My trick was to set the video speed to 0.5x to give me more time to look over the photos without having to keep pausing!

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  4 года назад

Sure. Color calibration is a good idea. But if we're honest, it's all a bit of a crapshoot. We all see color differently, lenses affect it and there are too many variables to address they adequately, YT compression on video affects it also. The best we can say is that the colors relative to each other here are indicitive of patterns you might see yourself.

    My votes:
D for RAW, A (maybe C, definitely not B) for JPEG. For me Canon has live colors, but it's not over saturated at the same time and handles yellow better.
Ok, Canon+CaptureOne for Raw, Canon or Fuji/Provia for JPEG.

  • @godofhope

  • @peasantrobot

    RAW (once per subject)
Canon = 9, Fujifilm = 5 (some frames I liked both so each gained a point)
    JPEG
Fujifilm = 9, Canon = 8 (some frames liked both and Canon exclusively on skin tone)
Now one note: Canon colors on mirrorless differs from colors found on DSLRs. This being said, if Fujifilm solves the skin tones then it gains my confidence.
    Thank you again, guys!

  • @montique608

Only played with the Raw images blind test. Guessed correctly as the A is Canon & B is Fuji. C & D's color is a bit unnatural and JPG is hard to tell after the process. I was using Sony for a long time, great resolution but not so good colors. Then I switched to Fuji and think that they have good colors. But after compare to the Canon's, they have more accurate original colors output rather than Fuji's saturated colors (just by a little bit). Besides the dynamic range is better I think for the Canon's :)

It's bloody annoying, isn't it? I came here hoping I'd find it didn't matter to me and I could choose Fuji without any worries. It didn't even matter whether it was Lightroom or Capture 1, even though the difference between LR & C1 was often greater than the Fuji vs Canon difference. The differences are usually subtle at least. Interestingly, I found I was even more consistently Canon with the RAW files, so shooting RAW wouldn't solve the problem. (My dilemma is that the 4K on the Canon M6 Mark II is pretty bad (very soft and poor in low light due to subsampling rather than oversampling or pixel binning) (and also 4K is poor on the Canon RP even) so I would have to make big video sacrifices for Canon. Literally, with Canon my only solution would be the Canon 1D X Mark II, but "4K" also describes the price tag!! 😁)

The Canon "standard" profile against those two Fuji profiles is definitely not fair, because I find the standard profile criminally boring. That being said, I consistently (about 80% of the time) found the Canon to be the least boring in this shootout. Very disappointing really, because everybody talks about how great Fuji's colors are, and I am so ready to ditch my Canon for something more modern and "with the times", but here they often looked very sterile and void of emotion and drama. I'd still consider getting a Fuji camera, just because their bodies are so incredible!

Keeping in mind I viewed this on an HD TV the colors I liked best were:For Jpegs - Canon 11, Fuji 3 of which 2 were provia and one chrome. For Raw it was quite different: looking at Lightroom 10 Fuji and 3 Canon; In Capture One Fuji 5, Canon 8. Keep in mind that I was looking for the most faithful rendition, not the most saturated or contrast laden and no doubt a color balanced monitor would impact things as one can play with the settings on TV's in a million ways. Additionally in the pictures with the little girl on the porch the skin looked odd on the forehead to me which may have been shadows and in some pictures the greenery colors were too far from normal for my taste. Again, this is a TV. Some might jump at higher levels of saturation or contrast but I was looking for faithful colors and also a more reasonable, to me, contrast. Not to say I don't jack up the colors or contrast, but for just basic comparison kind of ooc. For raw settings in LR, what was done?

Ignoring the fact that full frame will always be wider at the same focal length, I can tell immediately, because Fuji always has less contrast with paler skin tones and raised shadows and more pastel-like colors and a cooler tone to the colors.

I have seen your video and....
I am not surprised at all
I knew From the start that
    A / D = Canon.
You can see by the orange colors on the car and the kid....canon tend to be more orangish and Fuji tend to be more Blue light (like Panasonic).
Needless to say, this video is a must for beginners and those who do not understand the processing of sensors by the different companies...
Therefore you have done an amazing job by enlighten the "un-enlightens".

Congrats - a very interesting test! Of course, I realise that it's to a large degree down to how my monitor is set up/tuned (Dell U2410f). But for the fun of it I decided so (sometimes I liked the pictures equally, for different reasons, so the numbers do not add up):
    *RAW*
    Canon Lr = 8
    Canon C1 = 9
    Fuji Lr = 8
    Fuji C1 = 6
    *JPG*
    Canon std = 3
    Fuji cl = 4
    Fuji pr = 10
I do not play with RAWs (no time no patience no need to) so when chosing my next camera Fujifilm X-s10 will be _seriously_ considered.

I realise I am late to this, but really interesting test. I use Fujifilm, but previously was a Canon user. I love both systems, I get nice results with Fujifilm but would subjectively say I love the Canon colour palettes and something about their atmosphere. I was interested to find that in the RAW images, I predominantly opted for Canon by a significant majority. When it came to JPEGs, it was completely the opposite - Provia all the way. I do use Provia for the majority of my colour Fujifilm work. Thanks for putting this out.
