Great question! For just a smart phone, I'd say the best things would be the Milky Way (especially in the summer when the brighter core is visible) and any of the bright and distinctive asterisms or constellations such as Orion, Cassiopeia, The Big Dipper, or the summer triangle. It's also fun to try and capture the Andromeda Galaxy which is large and bright enough that it should show up as at least a faint smudge under most skies, but especially away from light pollution.
