Ford hopes to overcome American preferences for body-on-frame work vehicles with its unibody Transit, which has been hauling European loads for about 50 years. For 2017, the U.S. Transit gets standard LED cargo lighting, an upgraded stereo, optional heated seats and retractable running boards, and standard 3.7-liter V6 power for dualies. The heavy-duty 350 can now be had on the shorter 130-inch wheelbase, and Ford has committed to adding Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support to all 2017 versions.
Mike Perkins found the high-roof Transit had plenty of room for his 6-foot, 4-inch self to stand upright in the cargo area, and he also appreciated the new standard Side Wind Stabilization, which detects swerving resulting from high winds and applies the brakes on one side to keep things straight. Transits on the 130-inch wheelbase can accommodate materials up to 10 feet long, while the longer version can handle full-size plywood sheets on the floor and 14-foot lengths of material. Even before you started talking, I was thinking it looked like something used to knock off an art gallery in London. Then you confirmed it.
Hello and I was glad to find this video. I have a 2017 mid-roof with the EcoBoost 6 cylinder engine and a 3.73 rear end. I had it weighed and it weighs right at 6283 lb. I getting 14.5 to15.4 MPG in town and 20. 7 TO 20.1 MPGmiles on the freeway...going to the Bay Area from the San Joaquin Valley so there's some hill climbing in that mileage and I'm traveling well at the legal limit or above on the freeways.... which is 70+ MPH. I do have to pull it into 5th gear climbing over the pass.
I love the van my brother has one but he only has problems. recalls and other problems but is a Beautiful van
Eco boost is worth it for this van. The loaner I got didn’t have eco boost and it’s very slow, no pep when merging onto the parkway.
As always, great test drive review, Michael! You did a great job overviewing this vehicle as a whole. My family actually got a passenger version (as a rental) for a trip to North Carolina a few years ago. The ride was pretty well controlled (from the passengers seat), and it had more than enough space to hold luggage for 10 passengers.
Also, I just finished checking out your written review of this Ford Transit. From one car reviewer to another, keep it up! 👍🏽
It was definitely a pleasant surprise.
I just got this van. It's fast that's for sure and handles great. Very smooth ride. Little things annoy me however. I hate the armrest design on the left side (I'm Canadian so that's driver window side). It's just awkward and you can't really rest your arm while driving. The music system is also too far and I have to stretch my arm out just to change the station. Also for whatever reason I don't even have a nav screen and bluetooth which should be standard on a such a new vehicle.
Spot-on.
the best van on the market i doubt that, the sprinter and crafter are miles ahead about 5 to 10 years in front with design and engine problems solved out
Great overview and insight of the history of ford and this van.
I had to watch this twice. The second time I was able to focus on the van.
Cool 2017 Ford Transit van
I wish they made it in factory 4x4. I know you can get them added at authorized companies, but not factory installed.
Yep I Would buy one today if it was four wheel drive. And maybe a bit more reliable.
Love this van!
Is this van reliable? In my opinion this is the best looking van on the market but I just don’t know how I feel about Ford.
It's so-so. It's somewhat better than the Sprinter in that Ford maintenance is cheaper and more widespread than Mercedes-Benz, but both will break down one way or another.
hello, does anyone knows where to buy the floor and walls like the inside of this van?
Bought a couple of them nothing but problem after problem after problem. Left employees stranded several recalls, leaking brake fluid, Eventually I got ride of those stupid things and got what I should've stuck to in the first place
Chevy express.
Great review. I'm looking at one of these to convert for long-distance travel. I'd like it if you'd do a follow up on a diesel model. I'm very curious about the experience with a slightly different set of numbers under the hood. The mileage should be very good, but with 185/350 it would be interesting to know your thoughts on the power/weight performance. You look like you could be a son of Dennis Cole! Look him up ---- 1970's actor.
The diesel is underpowered compared to the EcoBoost and the emissions technology is subpar. Oh, and it requires DEF now, so that's a bummer.
Wow mpg is bad! I'm currently driving a 2015 transit in the UK. I get roughly 31 mpg from the 2.2 tdci engine, probably more if my rounds didn't have so many hills. The dash at the bottom of your version seems to come out more and has a different design. Your wing mirror arms on that are so long? Why? That's what blind spot mirrors are for. Daytime lights are standard on our transits. We have 2017 top spec sprinters too and to be honest I think the transit drives better and is better.
Those mirrors are the optional long-arm mirrors, which are useful when towing a wide trailer. That mileage is for the V-6 gasoline engines, not the diesel, and a US gallon is only 4/5ths of a UK gallon (1.2 US gallons per 1 UK gallon). Our diesel option is a 3.2L 5-cylinder, not a 2.2L which would be inadequate for the U.S. market. So yeah, our numbers appear a little lower, but there's more to than meets the eye.
RV112 you are also comparing imperial gallons to u.s. Gallons. It's not as far off as you think.
the van for bad guy
Will Ford ever make a large transit that has double sliding doors for deliveries id snatch that quick pick 6
50 years in the euro market is nice, but the USA, i a whole different driving game. but a Found On Road Dead? What is the most common engine in Europe? You may be right, the transit is looking like a good option in the sprinter. I have a few years, until I will buy a van. So i can wait and see how the stand up to the miles in the USA.
Jorge Miguel in Europe market almost all will not be a gas motor as seen in us.
I have both ford and dodge van. lets just say better off with the dodge! ford transit water leaks into the air box and makes it run like crap. 35000 miles not covered. 500 to fix factory design flaw
Just got rid of my Promaster. It had a big workspace and great power. But man, it seemed it was always ready to fly apart. At 57,000 miles, wheel bearings, , struts and a bank of lifters later, I started to hear a whine in the trans. Others I’ve talked to have had the same experience. Glad I’m done with it.
How much for a basic model no seats in back or anything fancy shmancy. ? Would want it empty so I could make my own camper inside
FORD....put the 2.3 EcoBoost with 10 speed automatic from Mustang/Ranger in the low roof 1500 Transit and make this a +25 mpg cruiser !
Not going to work, the 3.5 EcoBoost showed 11.7 mpg...
@@gjolinares23 > the 2019 Transit will have ten speed, with two gas and four cylinder diesel option, see MotorTrend
@@JosephOlson-ld2td yes I saw that but I'm saying fuel economy wise
Drove one for the first time today. It has some good features but it has the poorest ergonomics of any vehicle I have ever drove. From the poor arm rest design to hitting my knee on the steering column when getting out I really developed a strong dislike for the van before the day was out.
Interesting. How tall are you?
Right at 6' tall. I took in my 2011 Econoline into a body shop and got a 2017 Transit as a rental. It drives and handles much better than the Econoline, but as I said the ergonomics were terrible.
I have a Transit Connect and it, too, seems as if no human ever sat in the driver's seat before they built the thing. Ergonomics seems to have escaped Ford's designers.
No day time running lights ?
Not standard, but you can add them as a $45 option, I believe.
How high can you count?
Use the metric system please.
I think this van weight around 7000 lbs and it has 3.7 v6?
This on has a turbo charged engine (Ecoboost 3.5l)
Wht state are you
Totally thought you said cripples not criminals
That would've been ... problematic.
You look like the pubg default guy
The Red Streak Speedster So where's my chicken dinner??
Michael Perkins 😂😂😂 you gotta win it!!
This dude needs to speak up. Quit talking so softly in the beginning. Great review though. Why didn't he talk about the 3.2L Powerstroke Diesel?
V6 gas consumes more so theyre not for economical types. They love guzzlers.

what euro criminals, car dealers there also? affordability, driveability, versability and coolability.
Looks good, doesn't work.
Too many freaking lines on the sides
Do the designers actually think that looks cool , modern and sleek
I know it's mostly used for work but damn at least make new cars look new not 1980
jasiel delgado let me guess. You’re going to buy a $150K custom dootschbag Mercedes sprinter and poor all your money into overpriced German parts/maint. Ford is about cost, durability and flexibility . Good alternative to MB sprinter that’s sitting in your garage bc you can’t afford to actually go out and drive it.
It's a ford, it is bound to break down
you don't know shit
...at the exact average rate of any other machine not properly operated and maintained...
1975 called looking for you.
Fix Or Repair Daily! F O R D
These vans suck. Super uncomfortable, so many goofy things that make it a pure pain the the ass. Ford please bring back the Econoline and just use the more efficient engines.
I’m usually Ford guy but this has been a severe let down.
If you are over 6 feet tall I would strongly advise you to look at the sprinter and not the Transit.
Chevy and Nissan are better looking and comfortable..ford and dodge are sinfully ugly and uncomfortable..with dodge being the worst van ever
Great van horrible review.
Honesty Integrity Yikes. Sorry you hated the review, but glad you like the van!
