I'm not off-grid by any means, I live in Hilo, but your videos have been helping me so much for my little garden! I didn't know sweet potatoes needed less fertile soil!
Traditionally here in hawaii we take the first 3-6 inches of the tip of the vines and plant them in mounds usually 3-4 slips per mound should help with the quality and quantity of the uala
Great info again. I have friends living on a coffee and fruit farm near Captain Cook. They bought a neglected coffee farm that had been on the market for 3 years (in a state of abandonment). It's taken a lot of work but finally it's coming around and they are harvesting coffee. Your videos are ideal for people starting out the way they did. It's hard to know where to start a very different lifestyle, but your channel is a big help for newcomers who want to be as self-sufficient as possible. Our family will move to Hawaii Island in 2022 when I retire early from teaching in Virginia. I will apply to teach high school science (and possibly college) on Hawaii Island. My two go-to sites for living as self sufficiently as possible are your channel and a DIY solar channel run by a guy named Steve up above Mountain View. Steve looks kinda like Dog the Bounty Hunter but don't let this fool you...he's a brilliant retired electrical engineer who's helping locals with little means get solar. PS: I have a RUclips channel, but so far it's just a place I post instructional videos for my students. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for watching! What a dream to have a coffee farm in kona. I wish. I just have to settle for my little food forest on my slice of paradise. My wife teaches math out here. It's a pretty sweet gig. Good luck on the move.
Homesteadin' Hawai'i They bought a Lease Hold (a whole other topic) farm about 6 years ago. The house is open air. No windows. Mosquito netting around the beds. 3 years it sat neglected, no weeding. You can imagine the job excavating the coffee plants from the overgrowth.
Nice job. Have you ever looked into growing potatoes in mulch or chopped up coconut husk where you can observe the growth of the potatoes before you harvest?
I planted about 40 slips this year ,my first year growing, so I hope I get a harvest!! I wish I had time here in Virginia to use the vines! But only have 60 days before first frost! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you for sharing. I came across your videos recently when making search on bamboos. Very helpful information you have and I am enjoying your garden bits too. I was wondering if you have any videos on how to propagate breadfruit trees . Thank you
Thank you. I do have a breadfruit propagation video. Please propagate as much as you can How To Air Layer Breadfruit ('Ulu) ruclips.net/video/P-D6UTAaiSw/видео.html
Mahalo for watching. Since the video was done I have since learned a new technique to wrap the growing vines around the center and hill it up a bit more. I am excited to try that method out.
How did you get dirt or soil on your property. I live in the Keaau/HPP area and my one acre is mostly lava rocks when we purchased the home 2 yrs ago. I am forever digging up rocks and adding soil for my fruits and vegs. I think what I should have done earlier is to haul in dirt before the plantings took place. It’s a bit of a challenge, but do the best I can with this land . Thanks for all your tips and suggestions!
For years I would surf in the morning and come back with soil from a pile I knew of in Hilo or horse manure or mulch (back when you could pick up anytime). You definitely have to build it here. I also planted a lot of nitrogen fixing trees which helped build soil. It takes time and hard work, but so worth it.
I just harvest two of the same types you had there. One heart shape (Japanese) grown in pot and i had about 10. The other one maple shape (vietnamese) grown in the ground about 6x3ft, I had only ONE little one:)
I heard if you plant in wood chips directly that the tubers grow really big, because they grow bigger due to lack of nutrients (they store up nutrients for later because there's not enough, basically). I'm not sure how that affects the leaf production.. it's probably a trade-off. I've been growing some in just fabric pots with mac nut soil, but I will try this new method, because I don't think they are growing very big.
I'm a new subscriber! Thank you for making this video! Lot's of information! thank you so much! I'm on Oahu and planted my first batch of sweet potatoes. I planted them in July . Do think it would be okay to pull them up or wait a little longer?
July is a little soon. Maybe wait till november/December. Thanks for watching the video and subscribing. Let me know if there is anything you'd like to see.
Will do. Lucky for us on Hawaii island we have the protection of poli'ahu on mauna kea deflecting the winds from hurricanes, making hurricanes less severe. Plus, always be prepared.

Every little bit helps. Mahalo
Do you have seeds of purple sweet potatoes okinawa from Hawaii I want
I'm not off-grid by any means, I live in Hilo, but your videos have been helping me so much for my little garden! I didn't know sweet potatoes needed less fertile soil!
Better tubers for sure. Mahalo for watching. Maybe we’ll cross orbs in Hilo one day.
Very informative. I realise I had the same conundrum and your experience was the same. Now I've learnt
Glad the video was helpful

Mahalo. I've been doing that recently. Way better
What size mounds you looking at?
@@craigdonald551 around a 6'x4'

@@jedi_mapperp4073 Clearing the jungle is an everyday job. That's why I like small properties :)
do the layering method..cover the vine with soil and they will produce tuber..
Iʻve tried that but found I get more tubers if I pull them out and replant. The vines reroot constantly but donʻt always produce tubers.
Nice job. Have you ever looked into growing potatoes in mulch or chopped up coconut husk where you can observe the growth of the potatoes before you harvest?
I think I'm going to try that out next season. Potato towers everywhere!
you do want to raise those strings every few weeks to prevent them to develop more roots along the way.

Good luck growing it out there. While it grows best in the summer for us, we can plant it anytime really. Tough, I know.
Sweet potatoes need at least 90 days

Mahalo for the tips. BTW - my hori hori knife is my favorite garden tool.
Such a great tool. The first time I learned of it I knew it was special
Do you use used coffee gronds in your garden to get rid of the arge snails and condition the soil?
I use whatever I can get, coffee grounds are just one thing
in my pot, I mixed pine shaves with soil to loosen the soil. that seem to help.
We use cinder here. Hard to come by shavings here
How did you prevent weeds from coming up on your vegetable garden?
Mulch mostly, but we weed from time to time.

I sell soil from Glenwood. Its very good aerated soil and has zero rocks
Just seeing this. Im in Alabama and have tried to get tubers from okinawan sweet potato. What is the process.
For each slip you put in the ground, that is where you'll find tubers. Plant slips 6-12" apart, rotate every season
I just harvest two of the same types you had there. One heart shape (Japanese) grown in pot and i had about 10. The other one maple shape (vietnamese) grown in the ground about 6x3ft, I had only ONE little one:)
They say each stem you plant will make tubers. So far I get a couple pounds from 5x5 plots

I’ll have to try that out. I don’t have much soil but can find plenty mulch
Wow never heard of this. I’ll also give it a try!
did the mac nut mulch work for you?
Nice job!
Mahalo
Nice video as always! Is there much difference between tubers produced by the heart-shaped leaf plants versus the maple-type?
The tubers with the heart leaves are white inside, the maple.leafs are purple. Both equally prolific.
From where you get the seeds purple sweet potato Okinawa even i need
Where do you live?

Homesteadin' Hawai'i okay great 🤙🏽 will do. Thank you so much!
Great information. Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the update
Your welcome
How long from planting potato pieces to harvest?
6 to 8 months. Better growth I'd you plant in spring and harvest in fall
I am also growing on lava, how deep should my soil be to get good sized sweet potatoes? Thanks!
Mine is about 1 shovel head deep and that seems to work pretty well.
Just curious, how many acres are on your land to start your food forest?
Food forest is on a 1/4 acre
Stay safe looks like you are getting hit with a category 1 hurricane this weekend 🙏
Will do. Lucky for us on Hawaii island we have the protection of poli'ahu on mauna kea deflecting the winds from hurricanes, making hurricanes less severe. Plus, always be prepared.
It missed us. The mauna protects again
Aloha! Do you cure your sweet potatoes? If so, how? I live in Puna, Big Island. Mahalo!
How do you mean? Because puna is so rocky? I’ve built up my soil over the years. Bring in loads of mulch and mix with manure
can you grow any old potato?
Sweet potato grows from planting the vine part, not the root like a russet potato
Big Island?
'Ae
Eso está lleno de coqui
We have so many Coqui
Kokik frog going off
So many here
cheeehuuuuu!
You don't have to plant it with root and the younger part is better.
Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely try that out next time
Dude , youu need biochar , cow or horse manure and a good dose of dolomite and triple 16. Then water and stand back !
Well, I have horse manure and dolomite in that soil, just need me some biochar and triple 16, thanks for the tip
Yee yee yee
Yee!
This big type of snail is said to be from Africa I don’t know how true that is. They are not very good around your property. 🙏🙏
No they are not and they have rat lungworm
