Everyone always gets so concerned with the relationship between Adam and Jamie, but can we just appreciate the fact that Jamie pulled Adam out of his office for the sole reason of sharing a new piece of knowledge/understanding? He knew and understood exactly what Adam would take from that failed attempt?
That is the best kind of working relationship.
They weren't/aren't friends, but they have something even better: tremendous mutual respect
they had a strange realtionship which is work relationship, by not being very frieds. idk how :)
I have heard that in the early episodes, the producers/people holding the strings, tried to manufacture conflict between Adam and Jamie, so to adhere to classic reality-show cliches somewhat more. But then they eventually gave up.
I have had great working relationships with most people in my 25 years of being a professional (insert my profession at the time), but RARELY ever spent personal time with any of them. And usually, I felt uncomfortable in the scenario. I don't want to be friends with my coworkers, I have friends for that.
That is why it was such a great show that lasted as long as it did.
Adam: "Wow. I fundamentally understand steel in a way I didn't five minutes ago."
Jamie: "I know. That's why I brought you down."
I love that so much. Taking something that didn't go as planned and turning it into a learning experience.
This was an epiphany shared. Not only that but a understanding and respect for your partner to see that they would get it, and gain from the experience.
It says more that Adam had to be notified of a big bang...

@@scottbartlett4853 ikr. The first thing that came to Jamie's mind was "I need to show Adam" and then Adam realizing what happened without Jamie's input perfectly shows how alike their thought process is. Great minds that think alike.
I can just imagine a floating moustache and Adam doing his voice impression.
I learned after Mythbusters ended that Adam and Jamie didn't get along super well, but after watching several of these videos it's clear that they both had a great deal of respect for each other; what an amazing pair of people!
They had respect for each other but they never hung out after work or considered each other true friends. It’s like having your work buddies and your real friends
they did get alone and enjoyed working together but didnt have a friendship outside of the show

Fully, FULLY agreed. To be able to seamlessly and efficaciously work for over a decade with a person you don’t at all like is just the epitome of professionalism and mutual respect.
Honestly, for a long time, I thought they were lovers. Yin Yang soulmates.
what i love the most about mythbusters is that, even to this date, and from very young people, you'd hear "no, that is/isn't true, mythbusters have proven it" and everyone would just accept it like the absolute truth. man, thats a level of science you can't get everywhere. thank you so much for that.
I don’t know if “actually Mythbuster proved it, that’s the absolute truth” is the legacy that they would want from Mythbusters. Much better would be “Mythbusters did an experiment that suggested it’s not true, but what if we revised the hypothesis a little/refined the experiment somewhat and did a test of our own?”
I do this all the time with driving while on the phone.

I'm just going to put this here, I grew up in the group home system as a misbehaved kid. I used to force all the kids in our grouphome to let me put in Mythbusters whenever it was aired. It was one of the few things at that difficult time that really brought me happiness and helped shape the way I think and do things today. Thank you Adam and Jamie and the rest of the team, yall were like parents/teachers I never had at home.

I used to be in treatment centers and group homes
I genuinely hope things are going better for you these days.
I also was in residential centers, group homes, and youth correctional centers. I wasn't a bad kid I just needed some good parenting to keep me out of trouble. For me the Mythbusters came after 18 but they kept me out of alot of trouble. Happy to say now 42and never been in trouble with the law after the age of 17
2:58 It is true that, if you held your face in exactly the same position for a year or two, your muscles would freeze like that. I'm a paraplegic and I haven't walked in over 10 years. My ankles froze into a neutral position about a year and a half in. I was also told by my physical therapy team not to sleep sitting up too much because I would end up locked in a sitting position. If you don't stretch your muscles, they do freeze.

Similar but different experience, my dog was paralyzed this time last year and even with physical therapy it took us six months to unlock her toes to get them to bend again. She's walking decently now and is as happy as ever
Isn't that like frozen shoulder? When I busted my shoulder, my doctor told me to try and move it (in very small increments ofcourse) as soon as I could, as long as it didn't hurt otherwise it would lock up from lack of motion.

@@OverMotoren Same with anything, I have goats and if they get attacked by a dog or whatever you need to get them up and about again asap or they freeze up. While they are down you need to work their joints thru the full range of movement a few times every few hours or they (muscles) shrink up and lactic acid builds up which greatly restricts movement to the stage they can't walk. Reversing it can take your time for a couple of days and is painful for the goat. Any more than say, 5 or 6 days down and it's a dead goat (not) walking.
Back then mythbusters was discovery's golden goose. I can see the people in charge saying "anything they want to do, let them do it." Within the budget of course.
When Discovery stopped the early-season shenanigins like dirtying white shirts and forcing competitive breakdowns, and let the guys have their heads, yes, they started to make real TV.
The concept of 'reality' TV was shown to be the control-freak crap it was, and collaboration and exploration was shown to be the success it is.
'reality' tv is what killed tv. its fake as hell. loaded to the gills with manufactured drama.

It was the last and only reason I hung on to cable TV as long as I did. I finally dropped cable and watched MythBusters on Amazon instead and never looked back to the rest of the garbage that was on. Is was a real shame that Discovery and TLC turned into total crap reality and showed the real and fake sleaze that America had become. I can only imagine how bad it must be now that we've crossed into the idiocracy.
Watching you throughout the years has been a light in a dark place. You make complicated things easier for us dummies to understand and enjoy learning. Please never stop making these videos in a way that makes it fun for everyone to learn and enjoy your content! We all love your brain! Thank you for being a amazing human being!

I've been a teacher of physics for 30 years. I have no higher compliment I could give to the Mythbusters concept and Adam and Jamie and the others than to say that I have long wished to have the budget, space, and time to have the lab experiences in physics courses be more like Mythbusters. No greater learning experience could have been given to students than to present something to be tested, have them work out how they would test it, how would they measure it, and how they would analyze the results. It would have been wicked.
I absolutely loved Mythbusters growing up.. it shaped my problem solving abilities that has helped me in life in the most mysterious ways..
by the way, the disappearing cement truck changed a few standards in the military for safe blast radius measures. Just saying.
One of the Most Iconic Adam Breaking point moments for me has to the Myth ping pong ball raising a boat. Adam needs a cookie is a line I will never forget after Jamie and Adam had a on screen disagreement over ways to do the myth
I seem to remember that line being said a few times, and it made me think that Adam was diabetic.

@@thegardenofeatin5965 I don't have the source on-hand, but later on one of Adam or Jamie said that the line wasn't actually the snarky dismissal it came across as on-air. Basically, diabetic or not, Adam would get so wrapped up in his work that he would forget to eat. That would affect his blood sugar, which in turn would affect his mood and make him grumpy. So "Adam needs a cookie" was a legitimate suggestion in the sense of "He needs to freakin' eat something, that'll put him in a better mood."

Which snickers took full advantage of.
The show worked so well because Jamie was the solid practicality contrasting Adam's exuberance nature.
No question the chemistry and dynamics between the two hosts, and eventually the two teams, was key to the show's success. I love me some Mythbusters.

Yes, he has said as much - and it's also the reason he doubts they will ever work together again.
7:38 this is why Adam is awesome. He doesn't stop at just answering the question, he goes full tilt gets visual aids, which being awesome he has lying around his workshop, and makes sure as many people as possible are going to understand the thing he is explaning.
What amazes me about Adam is his power of recollection in these. There is no way I would be able to give such concise information about a thing that I did that many years ago with such vivid detail. Thank you, Adam. You're a treasure to us all.
I’ve always enjoyed those “OOOHHHH, so if you do this, that happens.” Moments from the Mythbusters episodes. These EPIPHANY moments are what taught me how to problem solve.
And yeah, I remember the Truck Squish episodes. I could tell how frustrated both Adam and Jamie were with how many times these experiments failed…..
Watching them get excited over a new idea is one of the more joyous things in life.
I am now addicted to this channel. I've watched almost all of the Mythbusters episodes, and I love these "Monday morning" unpacking of some of the things that we didn't see or know or think of at the time.
Adam, the energy that you bring to anything where curiosity is involved... It's contagious and delightful. I couldn't watch one of your videos and not be smiling by the end if I tried.

Just thinking about steel drums similar in size to the “torpedo” Adam talks about, odds are the steel drum instrument Adam mentions are handpans. If I had to guess, hydroforming probably explains the shift from hand made instruments towards mass production in that industry over the last few years. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Yeah steel drums tend to be one sided as well. I think they stamp them rather than hydroforming

Let me just say that I appreciate that you stuck with the "squished car" episode. That was one of the most interesting episodes ever (appealed to my inner 6 year old boy)!
Mythbusters reminds me of a story: A Manager went up to the CEO with a letter. It was his resignation. CEO asked about it and the Manager told him how a bad decision he made has cost the company a million dollars. CEO tore up the letter and said "Why would I let you go when I just spent a million dollars training you?".

I've been binge watching Mythbusters through the pandemic, with everything you've said about how you and Jamie weren't friends, but had this unique working relationship.
What stands out again and again is when something worked as a result of both of you working together. Not to mention that moment where you both understood that the other person contributed to your understanding of how to manipulate ideas and materials to get to a final result.
That was a special collaboration, and I think (hope?) that you both realize that each of you made each other a much greater maker and thinker for having known each other.
It makes me so happy that Adam still tells stories about Mythbusters even though it ended a while ago ! And somehow still has new stories for everything

Those "Huh....oooooh" moments are one of my favorite parts about trying to make things. A little piece of information suddenly make a whole bunch of pieces click. Getting a whole bunch of makers in a space just making stuff would be awesome largely because of that type of information exchanging.

I submitted the myth that one can't polish a turd, I was laughed off the discovery/mythbusters forum by moderators and the community, then about a year later they aired the episode.
That one was hilarious and oddly enlightening.

Also assuming he had the same thought and realization, which is why he wanted you to see he? (Meaning because he had also figured it out, not because he needed you to figure it out, and was also entertained by watching you figure it out)
In recent years I've become more aware of parasocial relationships between people like me and a youtuber/celebrity, and learned to think of it differently than i would a relationship between friends.
That being said, it's an absolute pleasure to be able to watch the process and follow along with one of the people who are the reason myself and many others are a scientist, a tinkerer, and mechanically inclined to this day.
Watching the builds and tool tips feels genuinely like if Bill Nye met up with the Doc from Back to the future. Happy new year Adam 🎉 and thank you for inspiring great things.
Mythbusters was absolutely my favorite show I love rewatching the series and seeing the evolution of the show. Definitely love both Adam and Jamie they’re amazing people who were not afraid to try the unconventional methods to try and solve something no matter how small it was. You might not see this Adam, but you guys helped a young kid through so many days of pain in the hospital in the early 2000s. That kid was me; I want to thank you for that. I know I am not alone. I am rewatching every episode of MythBusters on MAX this month and it's reminded me of all the times the show was on the tv while I was in the hospital bed. Thank you for all your work and getting my mind off the pain, please pass on this thank you to Jamie. A fan for life, Jamie C.

With the whole face aging part where he brings up the presidents, you see it even more in the military. Especially the Marine Corps. I had a 36 year old master sergeant who looked like he was in his mid 50s. When you do and see the things we do, it really puts a toll on your body in so many ways.

Handpan is correct. Hang is a brand name for the original.
One specific myth I remember getting the Red light was I think something involving a treadmill or getting launched off the back of a truck but Grants group of the mythbusters did that one
There was one that always comes to mind, was the RFID chip thing. Adam was doing a seminar or something and said they were told they couldn't air it.
That was one visual that has stuck in my memory even to this day (2023). The episode was about drunkenness. They would each drink an ounce and try the tests, both mental and physical. I think they were also trying out "Myths" about what would keep or make you more sober. Exercising was one of the myths and to do that they each got on the tread mill to exercise. Well Adam was mostly blotto and tripped up, fell on the treadmill and was shot to the end and off! It was funny as hell to me. Another piece from that same myth was a slap in the face to bring you out of the drunken state. Hell, when Jamie slapped Adams' face, it was a hard one and almost knocked Adams' head off.
I loved Mythbusters and would catch it as often as I could.

Some of the R2 domes you get in the builders club are hydro formed (most are spin formed). I've one of the hydro domes and its great! :D
Lol, I was just thinking this! Although at the time I write this, the hydro-formed domes are pretty much the only option outside 3d printing.
Lee Towersey does standard spin formed laser cut domes.
Here's an idea for testing the 'your face will stick that way' myth. I play french horn. I brought my wife to a conference once and she thought it was hilariously great that everyone had 'horn face' as she described it. So I agree that in the long term your face reflects how you use it. It seems plausible to get a bunch of people and see if it's guessable better than chance whether a person is a horn player or not. (You could swap out horn player for other instruments or professions potentially as well.)
It is, however, also true (a tautology in fact) that if you don't stop making a face, you will keep making that face, and so, in effect, your face will stay that way, at least in the short term 😆
We did something like this at my school. We had a bunch of middle school kids touring the highschool, and for some reason someone decided to see if they could pick the band kids out of a crowd. 6 of the 7 people they picked were trumpet players.
Thank you so much for coming back on that weekend, because that episode is what made me fall in love with Mythbusters and by extension science and scepticism and the scientific method. I owe much if my outlook on the world to watching a car get smashed between two trucks, and I wouldn't have it any other way

I thought it was Jamie who wanted to do that. I thought I recalled him saying how safe it actually was, and how he can't believe the execs or insurance would have a problem with it.
That compact compact has to one of those myths where the odds are against you.
Unless you can get the trucks to hit the beetle 100% perfectly, you can neither prove or disprove the myth.

I know it's similiar but different world, having watched some non destructive testing that didn't go as planned and ate up a whole week was not fun. But the other hand was I'd been around some pretty bad malfunctions in machinery before so it was kinda expected too.
Always a pleasure to hear the stories behind the scenes! I believe the miniature steel drum you are referring to is the 'Hang Drum' beautiful instrument and would make absolute sense for them to be formed using the method described!

Probably bigger than discovery there, doesn’t seem like the kind of thing corporations and governments want people to know. It’s effectively encouraging crime

For anyone curious, when you become an engineer, you start calling pulleys 'sheaves'
Are they pronounced "sheeves" or "shivs"? This is a constant debate at work. Management and team leads say it's shiv, the customer and the engineers on the floor say sheeve.
@@FurryWrecker911 SHEAVE- technically pronounced shēv (sheeve) but has been known to be referred to in nautical terms as a "shiver", pretty much sailor slang for sheave
on second thought that'd probably be where the so well known pirate phrase "shiver me timbers" came from, or vice versa. Ya learn something new every day!

Hey Adam. That technique is called bulge press forming. I work for an aircraft manufacturer (NOT Boeing) and that is one way we put shapes in various inconel parts. It is amazing what can be done with water pressure.

You know, the first time I watched that pancake VW episode, I was screaming at the screen for you guys to just put the semis on train tracks to keep them in line. Did you ever consider that, and if so, was there a reason you didn't/couldn't do that?

Setting up train tracks can be difficult and time consuming. In retrospect it may have been the better idea. But, at the time would have seemed like a lot of extra work and expense with the hope that their plan would work out.
no train track needed, just a lot of C channel that the truck tires fit into to guide them.
I think that may have been something they couldn't do on the runway, honestly.
One of the problems with the squished car was you used a Fiat X-1/9, which may have been the strongest car ever sold in America. It was designed to meet the as-originally-proposed-before-Detroit-talked-Congress-down-to-3-point-seat-belts-and-um-5-mph-bumpers 1973 Federal safety standards, so it was survivable in a 50mph head-on impact or an 80mph rollover.
interestingly, since the myth, there have been incidents where a car was sandwiched between two trucks and hidden from casual observation - but IIRC, the myth was not just that the car would be hidden between the trucks, but that the trucks would weld themselves together and have to be cut apart - which was what ultimately busted the myth. (happy ending: in one such incident, the driver suffered only minor injuries, and was rescued after emergency crews heard him yelling and realized there was a car between the trucks)

I have to thank you all from Myth Busters, you brought some cool concepts surrounding fact finding to my living room which paired really nicely with my pursuit inechanical function and design. Mythbusters indirectly provided me with a source of perspective that was rather RAM like but instead of memory RAP random access perspective. Thank you for years of scientific and engineering entertainment. I am also thrilled to see that I can still binge on your pursuits but with more of a shop talk perspective.
