    Woodpeckers should hire you to make their videos. I like your no bs approach... LOL

      @@TheThoughtfulWoodworker I just bought this 24.5 jig along with the Festool OF1400 and Whiteside 3/8 downward spiral bit. This makes life so much easier, faster, and more accurate. Once again, thanks for the video

      Thanks! I've also got a Popular Woodworking article coming out in the summer of 2022 on how to build your own exact width dado jig with two versions. The Woodpeckers jig is pretty nice too.

    Thanks for sharing --
    I just opened my jig package up. Typically I use my table saw for dados. I’m building some floor to ceiling cabinets for our kitchen. So with panels that size it’s not safe in the table saw.
    I enjoyed your video, seemed thorough and thoughtful as well -- I wanted to see a video by someone other than Woodpecker.
    So now that you’ve been using the jig, any other thoughts or comments.

      I too head to the Tablesaw whenever possible. But for stopped dados the Woodpeckers jig works. The Achilles heel of the jig is probably the replaceable strips. I swapped them out for maple strips. Either work, it's just kind of odd they're attached with carpet tape. Other than that the jig build quality is good.

    This is an excellent video by any measure. Thanks very much. Some related questions: does the bit plunge into the MDF hole the first time it is used and then immediately cut through the MDF hole wall to ride the phenolic edge? Does one keep the MDF block, with the cut hole wall, for future use? When, if ever, would one replace the MDF blocks?

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker
      @TheThoughtfulWoodworker  2 года назад

      Thanks! The MDF is sacrificial to some extent. The hole allows you to make the first cut more easily. I've actually never had to replace the MDF block.
      Also look for a shop made version of an exact width dado jig in the October 22 issue of Popular Woodworking Magazine.

    Thanks for the video. I have not had a chance to set up mine yet. I'll finally be getting my 2 1/4 hp router with 1/2 collet this week. Jig was on sale a few weeks ago, so I got it before the router. The video helps. I have one question though. When you showed setting the cutting depth it seemed you were going for 1/2 inch depth. The video cut out of the shot before the final depth setting, so I am not sure if that was the final depth setting. I thought that might be somewhat too aggressive for plywood. Am I mistaken? In later shot, it seems that the dados are about 1/4 inch deep though. Any clarification helps.

    • @TheThoughtfulWoodworker
      @TheThoughtfulWoodworker  2 года назад

      I generally rout more than 1/4" depth per pass. In 3/4 plywood I usually don't rout deeper than 3/8" (on an actual project). Hope that answers your question.

    Many router guide bushing kits come with different collar lengths. I assume that the only size that works with your jig assembly is the 3/8 collar length. The 1/2 collar length is too long with your tool. Am I missing something?

    A beautiful piece of equipment. And with the Woodpeckers name on it the accuracy is assured. But at $530 I will pass. There are just too many DIY jigs that can be made easily for just a few $$.

      A Woodpeckers email I received today has the 32.5" for sale #369.99. Probably unwieldy for the average job though.

      The only problem I've ever had with dado jigs or track saw rails is being too short. I guess it depends on what you do, but I'd want at least 24" for cabinet dados. @@michaelthoma

      I like shop solutions too. I suppose the track saw guide rail could work, as long as your shelf was an exact match for the bit. The main benefit of exact width dado jigs is a perfect fit on any shelf with a common 1/2" diameter bit. You might check out this shop made exact width dado jig you can build with scraps and a couple knobs... ruclips.net/video/YX--IaZihc0/видео.html Best to you.
