- In this video I build my first ever ship !
I'm not usually a ship fan but after playing some warthunder naval on the ps5 I got the bug to try one .
the kit I used was the IBG Models HMS Harvester in 1/700
absolutely tiny but very nicely detailed.

Just roaming through Utube and found this lovely video. HMS Harvester was the ship that my Dad's brother was on during the 2nd WW. He was 19 years old when she was sunk in the Atlantic ocean whilst on convoy duty. Lovely model of part of my family history. Thank you
Thankyou so much ! Unfortunately the model got damaged beyond repair recently :(
One of the hardest things to convey in naval ship modeling, is something unique to naval vessels. That they have, onboard, and entire staff whose job it is to prevent and repair rust and weathering. There is an all too-common "sin" among casual ship modelers to depict them as if they'd spent the last 2 or 3 years on the Russian Front. Most ships have, at most, supplies for 4 to 6 weeks, and then spend time in port not only re-stocking but also painting and repairing things, and from the waterline up. (Too few realize there is a fully-stocked Paint Locker to this end.)
On a Destroyer, there might only be 40-60 men in the Deck Department, their Department Head and the Executive Officer will see to it that they have daily employment.
And, of course, 1/700 just makes all this about 2 orders of magnitude harder to model.
Stunning. I was genuinely surprised when you opened the box - it's even more impressive that you packed all this into such a small scale. The water effects look great too.
Thanks mate ! So was I, surprisingly small but well formed
Excellent work! Loved the explanations, they were really helpful.
Just two ultra minor nitpicks:
1) Ships underway fly the colours on the mast, the jack is lowered immediately when a ship leaves anchor.
2) When warships are about to use cannons or torpedoes the railings around the mounts are brought down.
Thanks !
I have no clue when it comes to naval subjects, so forgive my ignorance, I'll bear these in mind when I'm doing my next one !
@@lpjmodels no worries, I would not have known either had I not served. Excellent work and eagerly waiting for more!
My main interest is 1/700 scale and this is one of the best builds on RUclips!
Thanks I was really proud of this one. Need to do a few more ships
Excellent result on both the vessel and the water!
Thanks VMS ! 🍻
@@lpjmodels Sure!
That sea.....so simple but sooooooooooo effective! Beautiful work......
Thanks Steve ! Much appreciated , I'm really pleased with how the sea came out
Fantastic work as always James. That photo etch would give me nightmares though!
Thanks Flatcoat! It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but there were a few moment of frustration
Your attention to detail is incredible. Totally gonna borrow your display base too 😂
Thanks mate ! I'll look forward to seeing it 😊
You don't mess around James, really banging out the builds.
Thanks mate ! It will slow down a bit now I'm back at work :(
The ship is really good. But i'm very suprised at the result of the sea base. Very simpel build but very good result. Great work!!!
Thanks a lot 🙏 I'm really pleased with the sea base
One of my favourite builds of yours James. More of the same please mate!
Thanks Les ! There is another ship on the list, I dont know when I'll get there but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless
Great job mate! Only one small reservation. The mast on the bow when the ship is underway is lowered and there is no flag there!
Thanks ! I have pretty much no knowledge on naval subjects so the tip is useful!
Yes the Union Jack is never flown at sea, only alongside or at anchor. The White Ensign is flown from the yardarm at sea and from the aft Jack staff when entering harbour, alongside or at anchor. Excellent job by the way. I hope I can get to your level eventually.
I mean, what can I say. It's literally perfect. Perfect! You had me hooked for the whole video :D Bloody good work mate!
Thanks mate I appreciate it !
Another great video fully loaded with tips and triks to help us getting better in our hobby... Thank you so much for sharing your expérience
You're welcome Alain, thanks for the support 😀
I'm sitting with my 93 year old Mother- she always told me that her cousin Victor Milner died on that ship when it was Torpedoed. They were singing " You are my Sunshine" as it sank.
Great build, great finish 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks mate !
Excellent work!!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍
Thanks my freind !
Wonderful build and seascape.
Nice job. Thanks for posting this...hope to see more ships in the future.
Looks wonderful. The sea affects are particularly good.
Great build you must have the patience of a saint!!
Thanks Alan ! I'm pretty chill for the most part. It's when the plastic is bad I get agitated
Another great build, well done. Can't wait till the next video.
Thanks Sera !
Great job! I am planning to try one of IBG's 1/700 kits soon!
Beautiful, detailed kit. Respect for the filigree assembly! I also pay my respects for the elaborate camouflage painting! All-round perfect interaction of all construction phases. Ship ahoy, John
Thankyou John !
Looking good, would be even better with some figures! :P But I'm not complaining, very nice build!
Really nice work! All the details and base really make it come to life!
Thanks Jan ! I'm particularly pleased with the base
Fantastic build. Keep them coming.
Thanks Pedro ! I sure will
Loved the diorama really brings the model to life I gotta try that someday
Thanks mate.. with the size of the model I felt it needed something, worked out alright 😀
best one yet
Thanks Mr Nelson
Lovely build mate 👍
Thanks mate 😀
Very nice - turned out well.
Such a big box though - you could almost put that kit in yoru pocket!
Great skills and paint, good video thanks for sharing.
It's true the box is pretty big for the kit, maybe they have a standard box for smaller models ! Thanks!
Stunning miniature work, dude. 🙌
Your vids are amazingly produced as well... 👊
Thanks Sy much appreciated, I do work hard to get em to a good standard
This ship is tiny but the level of detail is phenomenal!
Thanks David, definatley little
An excellent video. You certainly improved your watch making skills building the ship and I really like the seascape, it really sets off the model.
Thanks Allan, I'm particularly pleased with the seascape !
Can’t wait
You've got more patience than me mate and better eye sight 😂 stunning build start to finish. Keep these truly inspirational vids coming. Stay safe guys😊👍😉
Thanks Dave ! Appreciate the support and the kind words !
Amazing work and excellent end result. Well done 👍🇦🇺
Thanks OZ ! I really enjoyed my first small scale ship. Might have to do another in the future !
Stunning job.....such a small model but beautifully built and painted, James. This is only your first ship??? Wow! How you dealt with those tiny bits, especially the PE, is incredible. A very enjoyable watch and a terrific outcome.
Thanks Robbo ! Yes I have been wanting to do a ship for a few months, I wasn't really that fussed with them before but got the bug ( another genre to try not to spend money on lol )
Thanks for the kind words and support
This looks awesome man great job
Cheers mate
@@lpjmodels cheers
That looks very good!👌 I've made ORP ŚLĄZAK from IBG as my first scale model ever build. I didn't have an airbrush then and now I can see that it's a huge difference. Perfect work and great water effects! 🙂
Thanks mate !
Damn bro, its nioce! Great work
Thanks mate 🍻
Thanks for putting that video out. I Wanted to build a ship for a while now and was hesitating on what scale it should be and you just totally ruled out 700 for me. Beautiful build, way too fiddly for me. 😄
Ha I completely see where you're coming from re 1700 scale, the battleships aren't to bad but these destroyers are tiny !
@@lpjmodels I'm thinking about trying the 1:350 Tamiya Kagero kit with an Eduard set. Starting with the Yamato kit at €250 when you don't know whether you like it might be as stupid as it sounds. 😜 Since you seem to like the naval experiment, any chance you can give that kit a whir? 😁
Stunning
Thankyou David!
Great job mate, amazing! the ship is like only 1 finger long :D I was tired for small pieces even I was just watching, I can't imagine myself handling that:)
Thanks mate ! I'm sure you'd be OK with it 🙂
absolutely magnificent sir
Is no scale a challenge for you James?
This one looks amazing.
This one definitely tested my building skills mate !
Brilliant work l think this is really marvellous 👏👍
Awesome build! Still can’t believe the size of the box though.....I’m thinking someone of the boxing line is now trying to squash a 1:350 scale boat into a box designed for your kit! Loved the base. I’ve been trying to work out the easiest way to make wave and gloss gel might be the way. Thanks so much for sharing this with us and looking fora]ward to the next riveting episode!
Thankyou Andy :) , the gel was the best I had to add texture really, I might have sculpted the waveforms out of something stiffer before paint first just to get the basic shapes down.
The bonus and the downside of the gel is it self levels quite well, not to completely flat but any edges around the blobs will smooth out. And that didn't help so much with the crests. But I think it works better than foil so far. More natural. Thanks for the support mate !
Wow! That is a really tiny ship build! Well done James. Not one I would attempt. My fingers are far too clumsy for that. I hate photo-etch too. Stay safe my friend!
Thanks Ferbie mate, I completely get it, the etch isn't for everyone and it was tiny ! Thanks for watching 😀
Waw. Beautifull work for an amazing model. Really. I are fan
Merci!
I cannot say what is better - destroyer or the sea. Looks perfect! ;)
Thanks 😊 ( the sea is my fave but I like the rigging too)
Fantastic job James! The ship and water display base was spot on. If you like this model you should check out the line of Flyhawk 1/700 scale ships. The details are even more outstanding than this IGB kit.
Thanks Scott 😊 I have a very tiny flyhawk sub but the rest of the range looks phenomenal. Once I have emptied the stash a bit I'll get one
@@lpjmodels Yes, you won't regret it!
Also a ultra nick picky thing.....your jack is on upside down. Sorry but I did say ULTRA. Great looking kit thanks for sharing
Gah I can't make a model without someone going over it with a fine toothed comb 😉just kidding, feedback is always welcome. How else are we to grow and improve?
I'll have to pay a little more attention next time, naval subjects are another world for me, so much to learn and absorb, thanks for the kind words!
Great work, I love the base! I do think that the aqua parts of the boat, mostly the turrets and aa positions need to be more weathered.
Thanks ! It was hard to gauge the weathering on something so small, there were details so fine it was hard to get washes to behave e.t.c the bonus is I have a better idea for next time
amazing!
Cheers mate !
The H Class you want: *insert H Class BB here*
The H Class you get: *insert H Class DD here*
Top!!!!
shame that i missed the premier had to work :( but now i got some time 👍🏻
It's OK mate hopefully catch you at the next one
👍
Great build. id never have the patience to build a ship model! would you ever consider doing some modern aircraft builds? or maybe even Cold War era builds? the mig 25 and 21 are fantastic looking aircraft!
Thanks mate!
I have a mig 21 in the stash, funnily that's the only modern aircraft I own, its not really me era, the last thing I built that was cold War was the hunter but that video has aged badly
Very nice 25 minute VMS commercial
I name everything I use? Do you chastise folks for just using Tamiya or AK too?
Massive box for such a small model.
If the box was as small as the kit you wouldn't be able to fit any text on it lol
@@lpjmodels Hahaha, this is more the normal size for 1/700 destroyer kits.

Fantastic result. This was for the model minutes group build right?
Great build James, I love the paint job! I have a 1/700 King George V underway and was going to build a diorama using a different technique but have decided to give your method a try. One question for you ... you mentioned that the watercolour paper didn't provide the texture you wanted so if you were doing one again would you use something else, for example heavy card, and then create the wave effects using gloss medium as you've done here? I'm thinking of substituting heavy card for watercolour paper and gloss medium for acrylic binder. Thanks!
Hi Steve ! As long as you have a medium that's got enough body ( and self levelling ability) to sculpt a little you'll be alright, as for the base material a stiff piece of card would be fine , it would still need to be sealed in though, the benefit to a card or paper is it has a lot more grip for the gel e.t.c to attach to .
For the next one I'm going to experiment with sculpting the base waveforms out of clay and then using get for mini texture and gloss ( it's tremendously glossy ).
The foil technique was on the radar initially but It didn't look organic or natural enough in the end
@@lpjmodels Thanks James. I've started experimenting with a small piece of 2mm card and heavy / super heavy gloss gels ... we'll see how it goes. I've used the foil technique twice and it tends to work ok if you're modelling very rough seas. I look forward to seeing the clay technique! Thanks again.
How to create a masterpiece starting from some piece of plastic
Thanks man !
Superb ! Is this really 1/700 scale ?
Thanks my freind! Yes but it is a smaller vessel. The battleships are a lot bigger
Are there sport fishing model kits to scale?
I'm getting a little older. Looks like I'm going to have to invest in a magnifier for this one.
I'm surprised I haven't needed one yet !
Very nice but when at sea the Union Jack and staff would not be flying and stowed for sea.
How many hours of work does it take to build a diorama of medium complexity?
Hello how many hours does IT take yOu to make this model excluding diorama and drying time of varnishes paints etc
Hi , I'm not sure, maybe for the destroyer 15 hours, it's quite small
This cant start fast enough...
Wow - that's all - Wow!!
:) thanks Michael !
