I purchased a MSI Cubi a while back, very similar to this but Broadwell. With the mSATA and SSD, adding 16gb of ram, it's a great system on Windows 10. I imagine the Skylake works even better. These cub sized pc's are great for everyday use and light gaming. I'm thinking of building a 2nd one, was waiting to see if MSI comes out with newer ones but may check out Gigabytes line as well. Great video.
Hey Lon, any thoughts on one of these small cube pc's running Plex Server on them 24/7? Was wondering about using one of these cube pc's with a better processor to run just Plex Server and storage on a separate NAS but not sure how one of these would do transcoding with a better processor (i7), heat issues, running 24/7. Your thoughts?
Do you know how late you upload Lon? It's midnight where I live, I was just about to go to bed and then you upload a video! I'm not mad at you or anything, it's just that you should know this.
I still haven't figured out why the big companies haven't tried to make and sell small mini PCs like the one he reviewed, to sell to education. specifically for k-12 use.
Get an m.2 drive and re-install Windows to the m.2, re-format the 1 GB drive, add another stick of memory, and you have a nice little machine, with lots of storage and speed.
It appears HP couldn't make it with the Stream Desktop series. While I'm still enjoying my souped up $179 200-010, I've noticed they've all vanished from the HP Store! I guess they were TOO MUCH of a good thing! In my humble opinion, they should have offered the Pentium and the I3 models with a 64gb M2 SSD. They would have had even better performance for the price. In fact, all those models should have had 64GB M2 SSDs. That also goes for those Stream Laptops (64GB instead of 32).
Plex has a lot of settings for performace/video quality so if adjusted properly(Transcoder and Player settings) I think it should be able to handle a couple streams.Have you tried with the *Ultra Fast* setting in the transcoder options, and changing to a lower resolution in the player. On that note, does it support wireless AC?
for the price i think i'll spend the extra money for the 960 model of the new alienware alpha's. Even the old base model offer better better value in my opinion at a similar price point.
Hey Lon, never commented on your reviews but always watch them with great pleasure, thanks for that! Could you maybe do another Brix review and then specific one of the versions that beholds the HDMI 2.0 interface? I guess that some readers might be interested in such a small barebone that support 4K/60Hz by HDMI. I know the Intel Skull is there, but that is rather expensive and a little cheaper option would be one of the Brix models with HDMI 2.0 (Gigabyte GB-BSI5(H)T-6200). As an HTPC enthusiast I'm looking for a new Media player solution for my new 4K TV. Thank you Lon (corrected that), excuse
Thanks Lon, that is correct, but most TV's I know doesn't behold a DP interface. So HDMI 2.0 is the way to go (without using extra hardware), when it comes to displaying 4K/60HZ. Playing HD Audio should not be a problem when using the right software.
I see I wasn't clear, a review of a Gigabyte GB-BSI5(H)T-6200, that has an HDMI 2.0 interface. The one you reviewed here doesn't, I know ;) The one above has; 1 x Thunderbolt™ 3 port (Type C) 1x HDMI 2.0
i cannt seem to find any brix without the processor, i would like to see one as i have couple of CPUs collecting dust here. maybe all brix comes with at least cpu inside.
very interesting product i would be considering this for a plex server but would go with the i7 version as per your advice. (i am back from my travels)
BTW Lon, i'm getting 1100 READ and 980 Write on my NUC Broadwell i5 with 2x250GB 850 evo. I love my NUC and I'm looking to do the same with my Gigabyte i3 skylake. Any info on raid setup would be appreciated,
Off topic...sort of. I cannot manage to run any retro emulator or Kodi, in Windows 10. I can install, and both will work for about a day, and then the audio fails to work on day two! Is this MS's attempt to curb the use of these types of software? Lon, do you have any recommendations for emu's (snes, sega, nes, and mame) that work with Win10?
Hey Lon, I have an i3"H" version and I can't seem to find any info on setting up RAID 0. I have m.2 sata 120GB running windows 10 and 2.5 sata 120Gb as storage as well and wanna setup raid 0. I can go into bios and choose RAID,(only 2 options RAID & AHCI) save and exit, then it takes me to "Shell prompt" instead of iRST utility and.(cntl+i key doesnt work on this system as it did on my NUC broadwell i5 My NUC Broadwell i5 with samsung evo 250Gb m.2 and 2.5 inch have no problem setting up RAID 0 following the instructions, but seem like gigabyte has no info in regards to RAID setup. My current bios is F4, the latest is F5 but dont want to flash it cz everything is fine other than getting into iRST. looking for an advice Lon, Thanks,
Hi Lon, This is off topic but i really need some advice about the new windows 10 requirements after the July update. My problem is, I have an Hp Stream 7 and a NextBook 9 and a couple of other low end tablet pc's with only one gig of ram. They meet my needs and I like them so much that I have bought a couple of others to give as gifts this month but now i hear rumors that they will no longer work after the July update requiring 2 gig of ram. Could you please address this problem since I can't get any info out of Microsoft?
I saw a couple of articles in online magazines. The Verge and Laptop mag i think. been a couple of weeks ago. one authur said he thinks they will work but only limited, the other said we were SOL. Microsoft says no comment as usual. Trouble is i just bought 2 more to give as gifts and seeral retailers are still offering 1 gig models.
no ... you can activate win 10 .... the activation of win 10 its like an image of the pc ... if you change the gpu for example you must calll ms suport lol ....
+StooowieGriffin He could try it, but a 190$ PC would be build with used parts where the price would differ much. It wouldnt be easy for you to build the same rig.Yet I doubt that a 190$ PC could have a graphic card other than the integrated Intel HD Graphic. New graphic cards go for 150$+ alone. If you are looking for a cheap PC, try to look for used complete PCs. My bet is that many people try to sell their old PCs as a whole on the internet or at flea markets. Good luck. :)

I know how you feel! I got so used to the SSD on my PC that now that I am away from home and only have a 5400rpm drive for my laptop is soooo slow xD
It would be nice to see these mini pcs coming equipped with a thunderbolt port to hook up external gpu enclosures.
Sweet! A mini pc with an external gpu would be the perfect mini gaming pc setup. Thank you.
Nice review. Was hoping it was metal, heh
Should have an SD slot.Thanx for a good review!

I'm gonna stick to getting a referbished Alienware Alpha

Sorry, but I couldn't understand what web browser you used on this video and/or why you did use it. Thanks.
Is it worth to get the edge browser? If so, can it be installed on windows 7 since the edge browser is native to windows 10?
Are Nucs and mini pcs like this good enough for plex? Direct play 4K HDR With high bitrate?
very interesting product i would be considering this for a plex server but would go with the i7 version as per your advice. (i am back from my travels)
thanks lon, i can see i have a lot of videos to catch up on :)
Why are ppl sill transcoding? Such a faff. Don't most devices play mkv these days?
SkillipEvolver yea but i dont relish the task of re-ripping all of my movies into mkv format >.
+Gary A fair enough!
great video, I would like to update Bios for the GIGABYTE GB-BSi3-6100 belive v1
thank you for the help.
Hey Lon, will you review the Skull Canyon by Intel?
Does it have SATA ports on board?
Can it be used as a NAS?
SSD drives are the best, the spinning drive suck. Windows loads like in 5 seconds with an SSD, your righ Lon.
What monitor are you using in this video?

Is there any mini pc that could play minecraft smoothly?
Can you try Opera or Vivaldi for the video test?
Can I run Cad softwares (catia,AutoCAD,soliworks etc) on this?
no thunderbolt eh😞
too bad they didnt keep the thunderbolt from skullcanyon for the masses
Great Video
what type of computer would you recommend to be my Plex server that can handle more simultaneous streams?
can you show us a computer that can handle multiple steams?

Mini Pc Gigabyte Brix Celeron J1900 Gb-bxbt-190 csgo?
Is there a way that a surface pro can be a display for the mini pc... Wired or wirelessly??
Well?
I can get 4 plex streams easily using Plex for linux on one of these.
so if I buy the bare bones, could I take the ram and hard drive out of my old laptop and insert them?
interesting. is there a way I can take the os aswell? I'm kind of a noob on the on certain aspects of pc's, so I'm sorry if my questions are stupid

It seems Gigabyte just rebranded Intel's NUC.
First :)
499 usd ...who the hack is buyiing this shit?
Used 1st gen i3 alienware alpha for roughly half the price seems to be the better buy
