This device increases the volume, the American Luthier Michael Thames uses them. Even the Greg Smallman guitars have something similar but you can't see it and its attached to the sides, not the top of the guitar. I have never played a guitar one of these.

It's called a Tornavoz. They've been around for ages, just not very popular. Torres used them on most of his guitars.
