I went for probably 10 years needing hearing aids and now have had hearing aids for almost 20 years. I’m realizing that I have actually forgotten what so called normal hearing is, or was. I wonder if I expect the hearing aids to give me better hearing than what is normal? Hard to tell. I appreciate what you all do, it’s got to be so tough as hearing is so subjective. BTW, I’m a USAF veteran and I’m on my 3rd set of Phonak devices. My VA Audiologist is awesome and does follow the best practices like you recommend. I have the Roger & the TV connector. To be honest, the mute option is one my favorite things. When streaming on my iPhone, using the TV Connector, or mowing the grass, it’s great, all background noise is gone!. I have severe loss, so when I go to mute, it’s like I cut out 75% of the noise. If there is any upside to hearing loss this would be it🤠Thank you and appreciate your videos.

The other issue is that many insurance companies will not cover anything related to hearing loss, which puts patients in a bind. Do they resort to paying out of pocket, ignore their hearing loss and try to get by, or use Medicare if they qualify? Why is hearing loss different from other medical issues, such as needing glasses or having a tumor? Hearing loss directly affects quality of life, not just physical, either but mental as well. Other countries, such as the UK and Sweden, have universal healthcare and cover hearing, and the providers are not losing out either. They make a profit. Quality care for hearing contributes to less need for other health issues, such as Alzheimer's and dementia, and visits to the ENT for sinus problems, saving the patient and the provider in the long run. The goal should be to increase your quality of life, not profit to the detriment of the patients they are supposed to serve.

Great point. It clearly is a disability and I cannot properly function without them. It sad that it is not barely covered through government plans. And health plans are not always sufficient enough to cover the costs. 🇨🇦

I’ve been watching your channel now for a while and truly love it. This one is really cool to hear you guys (using the term loosely) brainstorm about hearing aid wants and desires. I just ordered my 4th set of hearing aids switching from Oticon to Phonak because I want to have more control of my hearing in situations where the hearing aids just aren’t doing what I need to hear at the time. In talking with my audiologist the one thing that bothers her is that when a user creates custom programs she has to try to recreate them in her computer. Phonak needs to step us and help the audiologists and ultimately the end user retain their custom programs. Thanks again for such great content. Paul

Great video and topics. You all discussed the 'sudden sound stabilser' function and this may explain why one of my Phonak L90s will cut out with certain sudden sounds - typically kitchen noises (cupboard door closing, opening jars, tins etc). The right hearing aid cuts out for c 3 seconds then continues normal amplification. Could this be a threshold value set independently for left or right aid in Phonak Target software?

Let's admit that remote mics can work great and do magic with good HI's. But they are very expensive and only work when the noise is not surrounding the mic. I find my Roger iN, Roger Pen and Oticon mics useless in noisy areas like a restaurant. High background noise still needs ANC (active noise cancelling) earmuffs or earbuds. Unfortunately the earbuds I have seen have too few channels and lack the configuration options to be of mainstream use. Still, some like Apples AirPods 2 Pro allow a phone listen in feature and can also use remote mics. This system works very well as the earbuds cancel the noise at the ear and the bluetooth wireless ANC mics send only nicely conditioned sound back to your ears. I would be delighted to see earbuds with the functionality of a real hearing aids, and be next in line to buy.
I've worn hearing aids for more than 50 years and know the stigmas attached with large hearing aids in the ear. But let's grow up; so many people wear these large earbud things now that it is ridiculous to believe anyone is looking at you. I vote for earbuds as their larger size is likely cheaper to make and provides more space for many other options such as batteries and active noise cancelling and hopefully, the processing of visual cues

This isn't a hearing aid feature but a Ear Mold improvement:
I been having issues with Phonak Silicone ear molds.
I spent over $300 within 2 years and had over 20 remakes.
I have tried Skelton and Canal Lock's and I tend to like Skelton's.
However I been using Power P1 5.0 receiver so it is so uncomfortable.
So Phonak made a ear mold that's made for comfort However, I get so much feedback.
So now my new Hearing Instrument specialist has ordered a Acrylic Full Shell Ear Mold with the 1P Power Receiver built into the ear mold.
I'm hoping it is more comfortable than Silicone.
I wish Phonak would upgrade their Silicone ear molds to a "softer" material but would hold the receiver into place.

wanted to share my professional opinion with you about earmolds- I love Phonak acrylic molds & you may find it to be MORE comfortable than silicone, believe it or not.
I have been fitting Phonak for over 12 years and have always been a strong proponent for earmolds vs. domes for a customized fit; I exclusively offer acrylic earmolds for my patient's at our clinic- I know what your thinking, but they fit great and so durable-they last forever! Phonak has the most advanced digital imaging lab in my opinion & they do a phenomenal job making the acrylic earpiece COMFORTABLE with waaay less feedback!
I'm not a fan of full shell molds- I choose CANAL molds for most of my patients because they are very invisible & honestly, there is almost NO NEED for full shell if the canal is made to fit correctly--and bonus, your specialist should tell you that you will have a 90 day remake warranty and can change back to silicone if you need to, but I have noticed almost 100% satisfaction with acrylic molds....who knew! GOOD LUCK TO YOU TAYLOR!

Nice round table with many great ideas that I would love to try. I believe phone app logging should be improved to allow consumers more fitting choices. Fitting choices should be a simple A or B choice as we would do when getting an eyeglass prescription. The phone app should quickly switch between A or B options, we vote and the log could also capture the soundscape.

I bought a new hearing Aides from my AuD professional Audiologist hearing medical hearing Aides maker and professional hearing testing Center 100 miles away from my house to my small town and my old my small town doesn't have great professional Hearing Aides and testing Center and doesn't accept my medical insurance company.
So anyway I have bought old Phonak hearing Aides my first digital hearing Aides that worked but I have 3 disposable microphone filters has to be changed monthly in spring time and summer time and I had to get them cleaned up and removed the sweat and water and dust out and replaced both plastics ears molds and tubes and repeatedly buying hearing Aides batteries a lot .
So I gave up so I rewatching Dr.Cliff Professional AuD RUclips video in 2019 after wearing old Phonak Milo Plus batteries hearing Aides since 2014? I think 🤔 and I saw Dr.Cliff retesting Waterproof sweat proof digital Bluetooth automatic Sensors microphone 360 degrees can be reprogrammed to music to focus on and one is to reducing background noise from restaurants and another part is listening to t.v. and radio better by reducing the back ground noisy environment to automation sensors to hear my cellphone computer Bluetooth automatic turn on when I'm watching TV and radio and in my truck and t.v. and radio will automatically shutdown while I talk into the cellphone computer and using my hearing Aides Bluetooth that is wireless connecting to Android cellphone computer and using Phonak T.V. My hearing Aides is waterproof and sweat proof digital hearing Aides with a custom mold small ears over-the ears with wires in the tip of the ears molds speakers and has a really good rechargeable hearing Aides base that is portable hookup to USB ports to electricity power and hook up to my truck and my solar panel portable power cellphone computer to charge my hearing Aides rechargeable batteries Station and it takes 3 hours full charge and can add additional charging if you have the old hearing Aides as backup to charging the new Phonak Paradise Life hearing Aides and or go to sleep for 6 to 8 hours while recharge hearing Aides and hearing Aides last 12 hours normal regular times without connection to Bluetooth audio Cellphone Bluetooth speaker and TV audio and truck ,cars radio Bluetooth speaker and some good theater indoor has Bluetooth connectivity connected to hearing aides usually automatically if asking the Theater owner if they have it . And also my Hearing aides has a Cellphone computer apps to Phonak Swiss Company with screen showing access to your hearing aids to see how much powers you have and warning you to go recharge hearing aids as soon as possible and can change sounds environment to whatever you want to listen to but your own Hearing Aides Dealership medical Audiologist will be setting up according to whatever sounds you can hear in the sound proof Booth to testing your own ears to working together with your hearing Aides and I love my hearing Aides Phonak Paradise Life and I can walk and run into thunderstorm and snow storm while not wearing my rain suits and hat since it waterproof and sweat proof .
Dr. Cliff tested the Phonak Paradise Life hearing Aides in Dish washer and and taking a shower and sweating running outside heat wave exercises and it still works .
Dr.Cliff Professional AuD RUclips video is in 2021 hearing Aides products review and testing Phonak Paradise and Phonak Life waterproof and sweat proof digital Bluetooth hearing Aides in spring time in 2022 and I bought it in summer time 2022 and I still have a backup hearing Aides with a disposable batteries so I can recharge my Phonak Life hearing Aides or just go to bed for 8 hours.

Interesting topics. Can using Sound Print app that measures decibels, location, time, difficulty of conversation , the occupancy and whether you are in an outside environment report screen print help making an adjustment? My wishlist would include longer battery life, for all my technology to work together well, better manual adjustment ability and better accessibility in public settings. I am slightly hesitant to invest in a better remote microphone because i want to make sure that i want to stay with my current manufacturer and not get limited by proprietary software that makes the microphone obsolete. Based on my personal preference, i am sure i will upgrade when i am convinced that the technology and equipment will work together well and reduce frustration in important situations. Replacement will not be due to device failure. The majority of the time, my hearing aids work well. I just think i could do better without having to put forth so much effort. I know i am not the most patient person and i have comorbid conditions that are frustrating as well.

MEMS speakers are guite some years out. The speakers distortion too much, does not play loud enough and the amplifier technology is not efficient enough to drive a capacitive load as they cannot reharvest the energy put into the load. Furthermore you typically need a 20-30V DC offset to polarize the membrane, which makes it a minor safety concern.
Most of what xmems says right now is a potential of what it can become, not the current state of the technology.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  17 дней назад

I have personally experienced the sound quality of MEMS and they are much further ahead that what you suggest. Have you spoken to the engineers at the company?

    • @Nikolajchris
      @Nikolajchris 17 дней назад

@@DrCliffAuD Hi - thanks for answering.
Yes, I'm an acoustics engineer at one of the big 5 and our evaluation measurements on their units show large amounts of distortion at half the resonance frequency typically around 4-6kHz (if my memory serves me correct) when driven near the max. output levels used in hearing aids. This is inherent in the technology and also shows up for other manufacturers with the same kind of technology. Xmems' engineers have following our measurements acknowledged that this is indeed the case.
For the sizes that are comparable to balanced armatures, they only output 115-120dB SPL, where a (low/medium power) BA outputs from 125dB SPL and upwards (in a 711 coupler).
Until a better amplifier is on the market, their tech is furthermore not efficient enough for all-day use in hearing aids for the reasons I listed above.
When driven without much consideration for power efficiency, they can sound really nice for music but so can a balanced armature - have you ever listened to a set of BAs that are not driven by a hearing aid? It's quite good from 1kHz and upward, just like MEMS.
MEMS speakers do indeed have some significant benefits like no use of rare earth metals and magnets, and high durability, but output, sound quality and efficiency comes first in hearing aids. That's why it likely will be a while before we see them in hearing aids.
      Have a nice day :)

I want hearing aids that STAY at the adjustments I select, instead of trying to be “smart” and auto adjusting after the fact. I’ll set them to “social” for example, which I have tweaked to ideal for me, and over a very short time my Widex hearing aids start to change the audio processing to something THEY think is ideal.
