Chuck - I'd seen your other video with the smaller drains and wondered how it would work with a culvert pipe. So thank you for posting this! I'm eager to try this in my yard. If this works, it would save me about $10K that I was quoted to install a french drain (75ft-100ft in length).
One improvement I suggest (and that I plan on doing) is place a piece of fine mesh over the top of the drain pipe before the green cover is placed on it, or glue some mesh to the underside of the cover. If there is any chance of long term standing water down in the pipe, this becomes a great breeding ground for mosquitos. The mesh will also keep small rodents, frogs, etc from getting trapped down into the pipe.
My question is basically the same as the others regarding clay soil. Perhaps digging deeper into the clay, wider, and using a riser on the catch basin. Ill have to experiment with an area this spring in PA.
Sooo, I bought a new house and had a spot on the side of my yard that was always a foot under water for several years. I tried this and it works perfectly. I had to dig three separate holes long the middle area and I checked after the last rain and its bone dry. Cost me about 20 bucks but I have extra rock left over.
I think the biggest question people will have is what is required to allow the drainage in terms of what the soil looks like? I have dug X " down how do I know thats enough? Might be an opportunity for another video just on that and a closeup of the camera on the soil itself like a side view of it so people can see what it looks like where you are at to know.
Im going to try this. My flooded area has lots of tree roots so trenching would be a bear. I also dont want to kill my trees. A couple vertical drains would be far more doable.

Hey Chuck! Thanks for sharing great content. I am wondering what the min clearance from the home foundation to this vertical drain should be? I would think you don't want this solution to close to the foundation of the home.

Did you dig down below the hardpan with this install?
I really like this method Chuck. After digging a French drain, I still have some spots that always seem squishy. I'll be doing a handful of these when the ground thaws this spring.

the only thing I worry about is will this carry water toward the underground foundation of the home? If so, that would be a bad thing.

I'd imagine you would use this method if the grade sloped away from your home.

I watch your videos often to get ideas for drainage problems and fixes. Is there a difference between this vertical drain and a dry well? Here in Ohio, we have a lot of clay that does not allow water to soak into soil. Any tips would help! Thanks!
Try to get below the Hard Pan. The hard pan can be at any depth, 6 inches, 2 feet or more. It’s a non-permeable soil, so if you can get through that good chance of success.
Is there a way to secure the grate to the pipe and prevent a tripping hazard ?
Part of my parking lot floods, and so I had to install a storm drain which feeds water into a sump basin. I’m looking for a reliable heavy duty pump, maybe a sewage pump. Would you recommend a Liberty ? I’m looking at model LE102A2

This will not work in my area under the clay layer there is solid granite rock.

I my neighbors water soaking into my yard. Soaks in and leaks into my basement. It's been well over a week since it rained and I am still getting my neighbors water in my basement.
Man, I really give you my sympathies. I have a basement that floods, but only after a big rain, maybe twice a year. It sucks.
You need to watch Chuck's videos. You need to waterproof your foundation. Install a complete drainage system that includes footer french drains, catch basins in the lowest spots to immediately grab the surface water, and gutter downspouts to channel your water to to a sump pump basin. You will need a powerful sump pump to push the water to an area away from your house. Chuck's videos give exact instructions how an individual can do this work and save a ton of money. I had a similar problem except it wasn't a basement, it was my house the water was coming in. I wish I had found his RUclips channel years ago. I used to dread every raincloud fearing the water would rush down the hill into my house. I worry no more. When it is raining hard, I sometimes grab my umbrella and go out and watch the water shoot from the discharge pipe. I know the Zoellar M98 pump is getting rid of all the water that would be entering my house.
