    I went from one Limelight hydrangea planted two seasons ago to 13 different kinds now planted in my garden (only one in a large pot). Yes, we may have a hydrangea problem. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Love them!

    I very much like hydrangea as well. I'm still trying to grow in pot over the winter, too.

    I think I have 6 hydrangeas. I’ve purchased the tuff stuff ah-ha for a second time this year. The one I bought last year didn’t survive our winter. Thanks for such a great video on hydrangeas. ❤️🪴

    Really enjoyed the video! I got myself a bunch of Hydrangeas this spring and summer, and I'd like to keep them year after year on my balcony. I'm in USDA zone 7 and I don't have any unheated garage space to overwinter them. So, my plan is to just leave them out on the balcony. My main concern is whether or not to water them during the winter. I was hoping to find an answer to this quest.

    Wabash Avenue in downtown Chicago (e.g. between Jackson and Van Buren) has sidewalk planting beds with what seems to be old-school limelight hydrangeas. The spent blooms are kept for winter interest but the shrubs are cut low ahead of the growing season. They get around 30 inches tall and the aggressive pruning prevents a lot of floppiness.

    I'm a lifelong Chicagoan from the "hood", ....now living in Holland MI, 6b and I'm loving that church behind you while you're potting up that hydrangea. Is that St Bonaventure? I don't remember which church has two towers like that or is it Saint Stanislaus Kostka?

    Your Firelight Tidbit won’t stay white for long. The flowers change quite early to beautiful shades of pink. Probably my favorite. Maybe your Pinky Winkey will stay on the smaller side since root growth will be curtained in the pot. I look forward to seeing how they all turn out!

    I’d love to have hydrangeas in pots but you have to put them in an unheated garage or shed for the winter and I have no room in either 😂. For those who want to turn their pink mop head hydrangeas purple/blue you can buy aluminum sulphate at Home depot and most hardware stores. Instructions on pkg.

    Hi! I have a question for you, I noticed that you put pot lifts instead of saucers under your pots. Would those be better to use instead of saucers. I’ve been using saucers and I am wondering if I should switch. Thanks! I’m a container gardener newbie. 😂

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  3 месяца назад +1

      I think it depends! The wheel caddies act as saucers so they catch extra water but the lifts let water drain through, so I think it depends on what you want. Bottom watering works great with grow bags on saucers.

    • @donaqiu3126
      @donaqiu3126 3 месяца назад

      Thank you! I do top watering and still trying to gauge how much water to give the plants that it’s enough for them before the water pools in the saucer. I do see the lifts acting as that extra insurance to make sure all water drains away so I don’t drawn my babies. So maybe something for me to think about getting. Thank you for all the helpful videos and I love your hydrangeas garden you’re starting. I love hydrangeas too but still nervous to try them. I’m in zone 10 and it gets scorching hot in the summer and it’s dry hot, not humid hot. I have a shady area in my balcony that gets about 1.5 hr of sun that I think could be a possible spot but I’m not yet brave enough to grow hydrangeas! 😅

    12:53 This one could be coppiced to just above the ground in late winter or early spring, every few years. It might also need root-pruning but less often.

    Excellent informative video! I’d really like to try and overwinter a few in my garage to use on my deck.
    Does your garage have a window? Mine doesn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️
    Do you water them while they are in the garage?
    Finally, what approx temp is your garage?
    Thank you so much!

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  2 месяца назад

      It has one tiny window but they don’t need light while they’re dormant. Once they start to form buds I’ll move them outside if it’s warm enough (it usually is by then) or inside near a window inside. I water about once a month while they’re in the garage!

    Bethany, do you find that any genus of hydrangea fares well in partial shade (shaded by garage, primarily morning sun)?
