DeathZONE851, We're so glad you enjoyed the interview. To answer your question, as with any field worthy of pursuing, breaking into the character creation industry is not easy. It takes a mixture of talent, passion, tenacity and luck. The MOST important thing you can do is to work on your skills, become the best artist you can be, and then do everything you can to share your work with a community of artists that you admire. If your work is great, you will be noticed. -Matt

I don't think I blinked for the last 37 minutes in fear of missing something. John is such a good story teller, I'd really like to see a longer interview with him. Very inspiring video, makes me love all the films more and more as it went on.

Watching this reminds me of myself at the ripe young age of 2, watching the Toho Godzilla videos at a young age...growing into a young kid, loving films like Dragonheart, Jurassic Park, The Dark Crystal, The Nightmare Before Christmas, for all of their incredible puppetry/practical FX magic, the passion that goes into the work. All of my life, I have never experienced such a passion as when I am sculpting, or donning a mask, or holding a puppet in my hand. You are living the dream!!!

These Monster Maker interviews are fantastic! Growing up, animatronics and special effects always fascinated me, but I didn't know where to go to learn, what skills you needed, or the people who made them. I wish I had these videos and resources 25 years ago!!

theonlyred4, Stan Winston Studio designed all the lead Na'vi characters in Avatar, both digitally and sculpturally. SWS also played a huge part in the design of all of Pandora's creatures as well. In addition, Stan Winston Studio created all the full-size Na'vi reference models and creature maquettes that were on set during the filming as reference for the digital team. Finally, Stan Winston Studio created the full-size AMP suits that were used in the film. -Matt

For the record... I'm NOT John R. I'm John A. That would be weird if I thought I was mesmerizing and said it in a comment on MY interview. But I'm another John!
