Cause the high freqs are the first to fall as time marches on perhaps? Don't think I'll be paying 2-3 times the $for some I can roll off with a tone knob...P.T. Barnum was the smartest man ever. He understood the nature of man better than Freud and Nitchie combind...every minute. Yep.
I try not to be that big of a snob and usually think in old vr new comparense that the new one is just as good here not so much. I do a lot of speaker swaps as i beleive they make the biggest easiest change in your amps tone.so old one wins by a shitload to me. Pissed i usually have to get by with the cheaper new one but if we,er just talking tone........
Finally had a chance to listen - wow, what a difference! The newer one introduces some fizzy high end. Sounds way harsher - also sounds more scooped on the mids.
Forget the cabinets, that song was really tasty Johan! Now back to the cabs, that 71 sounds so sweet on the mid range. It's mellow, it's smooth and I want one. That being said, I think that new one would compliment a heavier rock tone a little better. Great video Johan!
Let me say....the 1971 1960A sounds like a how a good old Whiskey taste, the 2010 is moonshine. Nuff said. Great played as always. Cheers from Jamtland Sweden
Thanks for this comparison. The difference is far beyond I'd expect. I can see that the mic placement is a little different between old and new. In the new one it`s closer to center. It should contribute for the difference we are hearing.
Hi Johan, have you ever tried the Heritage 20w Greenbacks? I'd really like to know if they are closer to the original ones than the standard Greenback reissues. I actually like the standard ones too, but this video shows there still is a difference with the vintage ones. I have seen your latest video with the 20w speakers and they sound great, so I'd like to know how close the Heritage ones could get to them
The new one has a harsh high end. Is the difference only speakers or cab as well? Have you tried pulsonics in a new cab or tge chinese greenbacks in the vintage cab?
Johan - thanks for your videos, it's always awesome to watch and learn. I wonder if you didn't have to compensate the head eq with more treble and less middle for the old speakers. If you want the same warmth tone with the new cab, would you be able to achieve it with a different eq?
The AX is loaded with the Chinese G12Ms right? But in the Metropolous vid 'Metropoulos G12M Speaker Shootout 2013' the Chinese reissue compares very well with a reference G12M from 1967. I just don't know what to believe!
The camera tells the story. When he’s playing the riff in the lower register, see how the older cab and speakers makes the camera rumble. The newer cab with the reissues doesn’t have the thump to do that. I’m just curious. Since cabinet resonance is a real thing, I wonder if putting the original speakers in the re-issue cabinet would sound the same as the older speakers in the older cabinet. It just makes me wonder if the construction of the cabinet and the wood that was used in the old cabinet is playing a big role in the tone as well. Hmm...
Quite often i can't hear differences in tone on A/B tests but this one was different. Maybe because I too was using headphones on my laptop but the diffrence was pronounced. The 1971 cab sounds nice and clean but a full sound never the less whereas the 2010 sounded thin, muffled and distorted. BTW Johan why do you almost always play using headphones ? Neighbours? Eardrums?
I Do so enjoy your split screen mixes! Thanks for using the single coils! Well done and thanks for sharing brother! Be Well Johan! Oh the Cabs? Love them both of course!
Cool concept and Im sure it will be epic as all your uploads are. HOWEVER: I hate this new PREMIERING at xx:xx preview format. Ultimate tease, I much prefer to open RUclips and there’s just a new unexpected video for me to enjoy.
Hey Johan, not the topic of this video but I'm interested in how you get that bass tone? I really like that kind of tone but I haven't seen any vids on how to get that vintage warm bass tone, cheers
Wow. It’s so different to me, that if I didn’t know, I’d assume the speakers were “a different type”.....great vid. Of course I enjoyed the older one....much more “girth” to my ears.
I actually liked the newer one. It let a lot of the high end from the strat through. But I think if i were playing rock with a lot of Overdrive like acdc, I’d prefer the warmness from the old one.
In the mix the difference was less pronounced, obviously the original sounded better but when played alone, the reissue just sounded way too harsh, not very pleasant. I wouldn't turn down either cab if offered one but I'd seriously prefer the original
Just remember, your amp has actreble knob, and it TURNS...roll off some high end for a few years, your speakers will lose high frequency respond too in time...jeez, this is audio 101 stuff guys, doesn't anybody try to learn this shit anymore?
I love when your cam shakes! The power is there! Older: a bit more mid range. New one: more scooped. But let the cab breath for more 20 years. :) The new one is already broken? Nonetheless, the TONE is astonishing. No one is better than another. You should do an album. So cool and refresh! Cheers,
Excellent song Johan! Love it, and loved getting to hear these in the mix. Both individually sound great, and would be an awesome tone to have. The 1970 cab just sounded clearer and less harsh, much preferred over the newer cab. The 2010 cab while still a great tone, did seem to have a little more edge to it and a bit more treble. Love the band!
Johan great video, But i wasnt surprised of the results. Celestion moved their basic line of speakers production to their plant in china somewhere in 2003. Leaving only the heritage series, alnico gold, blue and Mesa's V30 version to still being produced in the UK. Which means that the v30s, g75t12 creambacks and greenbacks are being produced in china with different cone sizes and materials, hence the big difference in sound! However there are some good news, apparently some v30s "marshall label" are still being produced in the UK but only in some of the 1960av and bv models across the UK.
They are basicly two different speakers. The modern greenback is so bright and trebly that it sounds like a different model. I tried newer greenbacks with my JCM 800 but was more satisfied with darker sounding speakers such as g12-65 and WGS et65.
Hi Johan! Regarding modern alternatives to the vintage Greenbacks: are you still as much in love with the Celestion Fullback as you were when you recorded the video on it?
Was thinking about getting myself one of those new 4x12 cabs with greenback speakers but after hearing this i now know why i didn't like the 1960ax cab that i once had, so I won't be buying anything. Thank you for this video!
Huge difference. I'm assuming the amp settings were the same throughout, but were you able to get the newer cab to sound closer to the old one by tweaking the amp's EQ?
I was actually surprised to hear that the newer cab, with the newer speakers, had a vintage green back meets blackback vibe. I could actually imagine getting a convincing AC/DC (Highway era ) tone.
Förbannat bra klipp, Johan! Bra lirat som fan, du svänger som fan på trummorna! 1960 AX kommer inte ens i närheten. Tror du att det beror på elementen? Damn good clip, Johan! Damn good playing and groovey drums. 1960 AX doesn’t even come close. Is it because of the speakers or what do you think?
@Johan Segeborn I watch a lot of guitar/tone/review videos to inform myself on what I am looking for in my own tone search. There are dozens of videos that have very capable and even virtuosic guitar players and despite the high level of playing ability, composing in these videos often falls flatter than flat. Opinion is subjective, yes, but one thing that makes your videos so great is your songwriting ability. That is to say, the licks, the riffs and the balance of the "band" to play in it's respective role in a completely digestible way. That and the simple approach you take for recording. I love the drums sound in this one. That kick has sooooo much character. This track has been playing in my mind for 3 days! As always, great work!
Another great and informative video Johan. The 1971 is smoother and fuller without the harsh high end. Please can you compare the Marshall 425a cab to the 71? It has greenbacks but they are the G12C. .cheers
Great band! I liked the original speaker. Is the cabinet and baffle made out of the same type wood? Would the aging process smooth out the sound of the speaker and cab that much?
Cabinets and speakers do not "improve" over time. Wood molecules remain unchanged for over 1,000 years and speaker cones and voice coils begin to deteriorate after 10 years or so. ALL modern guitar equipment sounds brittle, bland, harsh and sterile- not just this AX cabinet. The quality of raw materials accessible back then was so far superior that literally everything sounded better. Raw materials dictate the performance of magnets, wires, microphones, transformers, capacitors, etc... basically what happened is governments have seized control of raw materials under the guise of "environmental protection" but it's just a good ole' fashioned land grab. They create a false crisis then solve it by seizing control of industries, finance, etc... So to answer your question- No. hahahah!!!
The 20 watt new greenback sounds much more like the old 25 watt than the new 25 watt speaker. I would love to hear the new 20w vs old 25w comparison!!! I think the cabinet is fine.
Good point, but the mike on the 1960AX is placed closer to the center than on the original. That makes the reissue sound brighter. On the other hand, I have experienced that reissued greenbacks sound a bit harsh compared to originals. In this case I think the comparison is a bit unfair, and set to the extreme because of the mike positioning.
i have notice that. 1cm at that point make a huge diference... the 71 sounded way better but i can hear the mic placement position... i still cant say the real diference between booth
Wow...Day and night difference. The '71 sounds like a warm summer day. Great groove. Have you thought about sharing an Impulse Response of your '71 1960A ? That would be so fun to play with. Thanks as always.
Great sound the original vintage...but, have you any information about the 1960TV that have more bass and an attenuation of high frequencies?...do you confirm this? Great sound!
Hey Man ! I have a similar 71 , but I actually prefer to use my original 1979 JCM 800 4x12 loaded with G12-65``s when I use a Marshall 100w head. Unless I use the Silver Jubilee ( 1987) , then you have to go for a vintage 30`s 4x12 cab.
given it's a 2010 you'd think the speakers were broken in? Wonder how they would sound if you swapped the speakers, whether the difference is more in the speaker or the cabinet itself
OK.. can any Marshall cab go with any Marshall head? There are so many different heads and cabs. I dont know what to match up to what exactly to get the best possible tone.I was thinking of getting a 1959slp, or a JTM-45 re-issue head and a cab to go with it. What would be the best for either one of those? And how much $$ for head and cab together?
Thanks for this johan! I just bought a vintage modern head and was considering buying an AX to go with it, i will not after this... Id be interested if the same can be expected from the other modern day Marshall cabs such as the 1960av or a
Old cab is the clear winner imo esp with crunchier tones, cleans are good on both. Thanks for focusing more on strat & M greenbacks instead of humbucker guitars with H greenbacks like you used to as I'm a big strat over plexi/G12M evangelist. Though I'm curious how the old cab would stand up to cab loaded with a broken in set of Heritage Greenbacks in this same setting. The Heritage G12M's are significantly better sounding than the regular reissues (I'm not so impressed by the Hertiage G12H but I do like the Heritage G12Ms a lot). Keep up the good work ♫ Karst & EXP // Amsterdam // The Netherlands
I really try hard to not be "That guy" that strictly like old gear because it's cool. That being said those older cabs and speakers have consistently impressed me every time Johan has played them. Also, Johan, that was great playing as always! Cheers!!!
Different to one another for sure , older is warmer , but both good . But the band and tune is so very excellent ! Who are those guys ! LOL Great clip again my friend ! Always the best to be found here ....... lets go !
Do you know where I can find a schematic for the 1959 HW Reissue 100 watt head? Ive looked everywhere online. I did find the non handwired schematic. Is this the same as the handwired? I figured if anyone would know you would. Thanks
Johan Segeborn thanks for getting back to me . Yes I’ve dissected your video on the HW many times and that’s probably all I’ll need. Great video! I will also check out a schematic for the 69 Suoerlead. The issue I’m having is there is a static on the Presence knob when you turn it fully from 0 to 10. It’s not the sound of a typical scratchy pot. It’s a more constant sound. Have you ever experience this on any of your heads. The amp is a 2015 mint condition and works great. Someone online said this normal because the Presence it such a sensitive circuit it amplifies any bump in the travel. You’ve had more experience than anyone with these amps . Have you ever experienced this? Thanks so much!
My concern is if the mic was still in front of the 2010 cab while recording the 1971 cab just like shown in video, it would sound definitely different and won't give us a fair comparison.
This. If mic placement isn't exact same, then there's no real basis for comparison. I'm always shocked by how much even small differences in mic placement can alter tone.
Just enjoying your great tune this time around!! Am thinking of buying a new greenback to mix with cream back 65 and put the second cream back in a 1x 12 cab to replace a Celestine 70/80.
These videos are getting better and better, serious grooves. Thanks for all the hard work you put in. Still shocked about how good the old ABR sounds next to the new stuff. Do you think there are any off the shelf speakers that come close to these old pulsonics? I have a 4x12 to fill, but am having a hard time finding a speaker that does a throaty midrange and smoother top end.
Thanks Colm! None of the new speakers captures the basal quality of the vintage Greenbacks. The Heritage H55 is the closest though. The 15” Fullback sounds great too
Had to miss the premier due to work. But, I love your playing in a mix. I think the Original sounds best, but I wouldn't throw out the new one. It may sound a bit smoother with a humbucker equipped guitar. The Strat showed how spiky the highs were on the new cab/speakers. Great video as always bro! God bless.
Pretty spot on. I've got a 2000 1960ax and a mid 70s check 1960b with later 1978 black backs 75hz. I think I might swap in 2 out of each to balance out the two cabs and see how it sounds
All these years I have been buying and selling guitars, trying to get "that" sound. What I finally realized is that the guitar has less to do with good tone than a good amp and cabinet. I now have a Friedman BE100, and this same vintage Mashall cabinet with greenbacks, and even the cheap Indonesian strats and teles sound good through it. My Les Paul, well that goes into the amazing category through my new rig...
Oh, they sound a lot more different than I had expected. I’ve been eyeing the 1960AX, but it does sound a bit harsh. Johan, would it be possible to get a more similar tone by tweaking the eq on the amp? But on to the more pressing issue - when can we expect your amazing riffs on spotify or vinyl? As always, you’re knocking it out of the park!
I have a 1960AX sine 10 years and it IS sounding a bit harsh and edgy. I went through all kinds of speakers (i blew up the original UK G12M25) and currently i have the G12H30 anniversary 75Hz in the cab, sounds great. Oh, and it doesn´t matter if your G12M25 are made in china or made in UK - they sound e x a c t l y the same. If you wanna get this sound, you have to get old speakers from the early 70s/late 60s or e.g. scumbags...
Thanks man, you make my day! There will be some full songs with vocals here on the channel soon. :-) I think it’s hard to compensate with EQ. I think you’d just have to use darker and gainier settings with the AX
definitively not....i've both english from 2000 with 1777 cone code and new chinese..completely different speaker..more volume, mids and upper mids from english...less volume, a bit more bass and less mids and treble from chinese..for lack of better word..the chinese act like a very very tired english greenback..
@@FukEmUp145 thats absolutely true. Don't care about China or UK. They really sound the same. The Annies are great in a 4x12 But the g12h30 Heritage 55 c/s are even less harsh. I'm sure you can geht a similar sound to Johan's 70s cab with those speakers
Alright. Johan I watch all your videos. Thank you for all the effort. It makes buying gear a lot easier because you do the hard work. In your opinion what is the reason for the difference in sound. I prefer the old cab. Sound is much warmer.
To me both cabs sounded good clean. The difference was with dirt the newer cab sounded a little brittle compared to the original which I might add sounded amazing especially with you playing through it. You play some tasty tunes man!
That is a lot more difference than I though there would be. The new one is not filtering out the fizz. It's really noticeable on that riff you play where you are bending the G string at the second fret. The amount a speaker filters out is easy to get an idea of if you use load boxes and IR. Turn the IR off and there's that fizz. The output of an overdriven amp is actually quite nasty, but the speaker takes most of that out. Some do it better than others it seems. I wonder why?
I would like to SEE frequency response curves for both... I bet they extended the newer speaker in the upper range... hence the more detailed audibility of artefacts of the gain structure.
Vintage stuff usually is more limited, and guitarists seem to be drawn to this. When I play my 4x10" Jensen Alnico Cab, it also sounds very warm and full etc. But I'm also missing some harmonics in the upper range, sometimes.
I actually have one of those British cabs with the sticker on the bottom right.. I find myself playing the blues Junior more than the Marshall... Now we know why... Like if you listen to some of the Allman Brothers stuff from the 7071 days... Turn the Blue sky solos it was like they were ringing the bell... And you can kind of hear it in these cabinets that you got there the the old one sounds so much different thank you
Fortunately now there are vintage cab impulses that can get you there, besides that it's nearly impossible to own a vintage cab. Thanks Johan for showing this to us 😉, great!
Johann you didn't mention about the construction but I would imagine that there is a difference between the two cabinets regarding at least the material used in the back. The other thing that would be interesting to do would be to swap the speakers between the Cabinets to see how much follows the cabinet versus the speaker.
have you ever done a sound comparison with a jcm 900 1960B cab ? and if so can ya give me the link to your video ? i bought one and it arrived today but i cant play through it until my cables get here , i got a dsl100 H head new for $700 and an evh striped series fender with the painted hockey stick head stock, which i only got because ive always wanted one of eddys guitars but im dieing to hear this thing if you have a vid of it , and ty if ya do
the 2010 sounds fine on its own, BUT the 1971 just has a special low end warmth to it that puts it ahead !
1971 was sooooo much better in the recording.
Old cab is meaty and balanced, the new one nasal and thin. Some vintage stuff costs more for a real reason 👌
It certainly does :-)
Cause the high freqs are the first to fall as time marches on perhaps? Don't think I'll be paying 2-3 times the $for some I can roll off with a tone knob...P.T. Barnum was the smartest man ever. He understood the nature of man better than Freud and Nitchie combind...every minute. Yep.

Thanks my friend, it will be my pleasure!
Would love to hear something featuring a superbass, that vintage ABR on the reissue les paul, and the older cabinet in this vid!
VERY Sticky Fingers era KEEF!
The 1971 is so much smoother. 2010 lacks a balanced sound. I'd still play either in a heartbeat.
Finally had a chance to listen - wow, what a difference! The newer one introduces some fizzy high end. Sounds way harsher - also sounds more scooped on the mids.
Its crazy how different the top end and mids are. The vintage stuff really is magical.
Vintage stuff is old and used, that's all.
@@Honeythebeebee no way the new speakers are gonna sound like the vintage ones when they are used. They sound like totally different speaker models.
@@MariJu1ce Who knows? It obvious that these old speakers (and amps) sounded brighter back in the days
Sounds like whoever was in charge of that AX project has lost most of their hearing in the upper frequencies.
Original wins. Hands down. Deeper, more complex, less grainy/harsh, fuller. No contest.

That is to say, the licks, the riffs and the balance of the "band" to play in it's respective role in a completely digestible way. That and the simple approach you take for recording. I love the drums sound in this one. That kick has sooooo much character. This track has been playing in my mind for 3 days! As always, great work!
Have the 1960 AC 4x12 ( 25 W greenbacks. 100W at 16ohm) got it back in around 2001. Love it paired with my Marshall JCM2000 TSL 60 head.
By the way, your drumming is getting serious Johan, congrats man!
Thanks man! You make my day!
Another great and informative video Johan. The 1971 is smoother and fuller without the harsh high end.
Please can you compare the Marshall 425a cab to the 71? It has greenbacks but they are the G12C.
.cheers
Johan, another great video. You are amazing. For me, I favor the older cabinet, but both sound nice.
Thanks Jim! :-)
So to answer your question- No.
hahahah!!!
Hi, Johan!
Don't know why, but the model of 2010 sounds good with 1960 AX, but the sound itself is very respectful! I like it.
See you,
Zigfrid
Thanks Zigfrid! See you
The 20 watt new greenback sounds much more like the old 25 watt than the new 25 watt speaker. I would love to hear the new 20w vs old 25w comparison!!! I think the cabinet is fine.
matt whit Id like to hear Johan do that comparison for sure !
Killer riffs! You are a living legend Mr. Segeborn!
The 71, sounds a lot smoother. The 2010, is harsher and more trebly, in an abrasive way.
50 year old vs. 10 year old speakers gonna be smoother
Johan your music sounds great like the old vinyls. Greetings from Argentina.
Thanks my friend, you make my day!
Wow...Day and night difference. The '71 sounds like a warm summer day.
Great groove.
Have you thought about sharing an Impulse Response of your '71 1960A ?
That would be so fun to play with.
Thanks as always.
Thanks Lu! Hopefully I will do an Impulse response video soon and then we can document some of the cabs.
That would be awesome.
Thanks for the reply :)
I would be very interested to know what you think of the Fane Ascension speaker series Johan
given it's a 2010 you'd think the speakers were broken in? Wonder how they would sound if you swapped the speakers, whether the difference is more in the speaker or the cabinet itself
I don't know, hearing the "71 next to the '10 made the 2010 cab sound awful fizzy and harsh. Thank you Johan for another great video.
Digging the sound of that bass drum.
OK.. can any Marshall cab go with any Marshall head?
Cheers!!!
The Reissue Cab sounds brighter and more open but i like the original more! Great as always! Regards from Austria!👌Great tones!
Thanks
Hi Mike, I haven’t seen any printed schematic for it, but it has basically the same specs as a 1969 Super Lead
Here’s pictures and reference to circuit for my 1959HW
ruclips.net/video/I49eCSgM1us/видео.html
You can interpret the color coding of the resistors here
www.allaboutcircuits.com/tools/resistor-color-code-calculator/
Now, the question for me is, is there another Marshall cab that sounds closer to the old cab than the compared 2010 cab?
The 15” Fullback sounds great too
Love the vintage grill cloth!
God bless.
Thanks brother! I will do Les Paul version of the video too soon. Cheers
Johan Segeborn god bless ;-) Exactly what I'm waiting for!
So what is the difference other than speakers and age? Same type of wood and bracing or different?
I think it’s hard to compensate with EQ. I think you’d just have to use darker and gainier settings with the AX
Johan Segeborn guess I’ll stay on the lookout for 70s greenbacks. Can’t wait for those new videos 🤘
definitively not....i've both english from 2000 with 1777 cone code and new chinese..completely different speaker..more volume, mids and upper mids from english...less volume, a bit more bass and less mids and treble from chinese..for lack of better word..the chinese act like a very very tired english greenback..
Thanks, I’m glad to hear that! The primary reason is the speakers, and the paper cones are really important there.
To me both cabs sounded good clean. The difference was with dirt the newer cab sounded a little brittle compared to the original which I might add sounded amazing especially with you playing through it. You play some tasty tunes man!
Thanks man, great to hear that!
Great Marshall collection Johan!
And you can kind of hear it in these cabinets that you got there the the old one sounds so much different thank you
Thanks!
Fortunately now there are vintage cab impulses that can get you there, besides that it's nearly impossible to own a vintage cab. Thanks Johan for showing this to us 😉, great!
Hi Rodney! We should do a Cab Vs corresponding IR video here soon! Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn Awesome! Looking forward to watching that one 😊. Thanks again
Johann you didn't mention about the construction but I would imagine that there is a difference between the two cabinets regarding at least the material used in the back. The other thing that would be interesting to do would be to swap the speakers between the Cabinets to see how much follows the cabinet versus the speaker.
have you ever done a sound comparison with a jcm 900 1960B cab ? and if so can ya give me the link to your video ? i bought one and it arrived today but i cant play through it until my cables get here , i got a dsl100 H head new for $700 and an evh striped series fender with the painted hockey stick head stock, which i only got because ive always wanted one of eddys guitars but im dieing to hear this thing if you have a vid of it , and ty if ya do
Hi Johan can you swap the speakers?
