Inflict CRUSHING MISERY on your opponent! Modern Lantern of Insight control with Urza's Saga MTG MH2

- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Modern league with Lantern Control, a list from Patreon subscriber Foxokon. Lantern of Insight has been making people want to quit Magic for years. The banning of Mox Opal hurt the deck a lot, but Urza's Saga from Modern Horizons 2 (MH2) has breathed new life into the defunct archetype. Lantern lets you look at the top card of each player's deck. Cards like Codex Shredder and Pyxis of Pandemonium can mill those cards away. Make it so they never draw a good card again, and slowly mill them out in the process! The only guarantee with Lantern is that someone will have a bad time. Time to be the bad guy! MTG

for you newbies, you always playback speed x2 when someone plays lantern.
Doesn't Brian suggest 2x in normal circumstances? I'd do 3x if I could for this one.
@@andrewrosston7863 there’s a number of chrome extensions you can use, or short lines you can post in the inspect element console. Look it up if you’re interested
Jokes on you i love lantern. .25x speed
@@andrewrosston7863 idk, but I like 1.5 for MTG gameplay unless it's super super edited
Jokes on you. I watch everything at 1.25x-1.5x lol.
Btw, you are NOT supposed to let them have cards like manamorphos and fiery islet, if you can mill it on their end step for free. The deck is meant to control the top of their deck. For every instant speed draw effect they have in hand, you lose an amount of control. Your prowess burn opponent could have won game 1 if they saved up their manamorphos and draw lands and hit a run of 2-4 relevant spells.
@2:20 It was underplayed for a while because of metashifts but the final nail in the coffin was Mox Opal getting banned
I was a hardcore lantern control player in modern from when Zak Elsik beat BBD in the finals of the GP, to when it fell off immediately following PT Rivals of Ixalan. I stopped playing because of the simultaneous unbanning of Jace the Mind Sculptor of Bloodbraid Elf. Jund was already a bad match up, and not being able to control the top of the deck made BBE an amazing card in the lantern match up. Control was generally a good match up for lantern, but Jace being able to brainstorm made your milling the top card of the deck a non-viable method to control blue decks. I stopped playing it after those unbans and then the mox opal ban really killed the deck. It had a good run though. Was ridiculously fun to play and required a great amount of practice, meta knowledge, and precise decision making to master.
Losing mox opal was a sad day for this deck
100% this. I was on Lantern for about 2 years, but the ban of Opal is why I quit playing Magic as a whole.
Round 1 was Wafo-Tapa, of course they're serious about modern XD
One of my favorite decks ever since I saw it at GP Rivals of Ixalan. A prison deck that makes your opponent simultaneously hate and respect you :)

"I assume they're serious about modern"
Every time that you apologize for some noise outside your house, I never hear it. But that thunder roll at the beginning of game 2, round 3 I definitely heard. That was nuts.
It's been a stormy summer.
The moment you teased this yesterday I knew right away what I was going to do today!
i just want to point out anyone who took your advice and fast forwarded a little through the living end match missed the big ensnaring bridge draw. that was awesome. i love lantern control
That match two was amazing!!!! I can't believe you didn't just get stomped, that was some tight play.
that land denial game against the smallpox deck was hilarious
funny enough, you get those games very often when you get a turn 2 soft lock, keeping opponents off lands is one of the easiest ways to win if you have lantern/shredder/hand disruption for any early out by turn 3
I know this sounds weird but I've started playing MTGO with 'my inner Brian'. Let me explain...
I make a lot of tilted and poorly thought through decisions when I'm playing MTGO, especially when I'm trying to brew and failing against new tier decks. By talking to myself in my head (in Brian's voice) when evaluating plays or sideboarding, I feel myself calm down and start to make rational decisions, accept poor draws and evaluate where I went wrong in a game. Thanks Inner Brian!
That is genuinely one of the most profound compliments I’ve ever received. 🙏🏻
Cue the Blink-182 “Don’t waste your time on me, you’re already the voice inside my heeeeaaaddddd”
I'm so glad you said this, I literally started doing the same thing. Brian's approach to mtg is fantastic!
Oh hell yes! I love me a lantern. I tried to do a thought picker witch and tortured existence in pauper for a similar effect. I love these kind of decks. Turbo fog is another favorite of mine. Dare I say stasis might be my absolute favorite.
Yes one of my favorite decks that I wish I had time to play it more
i was so nervous for your clock the entire game, using yield until endstep when your op cant do anything is super useful when playing lantern online btw
I actually never timed out with lantern on MTGO. Once you get your prison in place, you can actually play rather quickly cause there's only x cards you care about. The reason lantern matches tended to go long is because the opponent would have to figure out what they could possibly do to win the game. The plurality of the time in the match was waiting for the opponent to pass the turn when they can't do anything to further their plan.
Thank you for playing my favorite modern deck of all time! Happy to see you vent positive but not surprised you won’t be doing this again xD
It takes a particular type of person to enjoy this deck.
Yeah like I said I played this deck in more than one serious event. I think I did 2 IQ's, a regional PTQ, and an SCG Open? MTGO is the problem here. :) Thanks for submitting it!
This is one of the only decks that would make me play 1v1 formats. ❤
I have a Lantern Control commander deck in its place, and holy moly is it the most fun I've ever had.
Your play group must love you...
@@GTAjedi It is balanced by the fact that there aren't 4 ofs of Pyxis and Codex and trying to screw 3 players just isn't feasible. Still gets a few "holy shit" moments once the squeeze is set up.
I was at a Modern 1k yesterday and it didn't go well for me. I kept making jokes about how I should have brought Lantern, as I do have the deck. Everybody's reaction was "No" or "Don't be that guy."
Thank you for the content, I've been willing to ask for a while, everyone says the same regarding mox opal but I was wondering if instead of talismans you could use mox tantalite, sure it's a three-turn delay but works better with the prismatic ending in the long run, this deck mills the opponent so the three-turn delay it's not so bad ? What are your thoughts?
That top deck bridge, Stuff of dreams and nightmares..
For fun facts lantern was a tier two deck to tier 1.5 deck at the time of banning for mox opal for those curious
Im sure the main reason the deck fell off was the mox opal ban
Same with many decks, stupid urza broke it and the decks that didn’t abuse it really hurt
That is correct
Heheh lantern is my favorite deck, ever. That match against prowess made me so happy
There's something fun about weathering the opponent's aggression and slowly strangling them like a boa constrictor. I used to like Winter Orb / Icy Manipulator Prison for the same reason.
Shame that it requires Urza's Saga to work now, it was one of my favourite decks to play back in the day D:
Btw it fell off because Mox Opal got banned
The deck was dead before mox opals ban I think it just got out classed from mh1
Opt was legal towards the end but the nails in the coffin were Jace unban and 5 Mana teferi. Control became a bad mu and then Tron became big cuz it beat control, burn was still bad too. Just too much to beat.
Vivid memories of losing to this deck in paper. Saga seems like it added a lot to the deck
I think I remember noxious revival being in this deck from back in the day, is it just not good enough?
I just love lantern controll, sadly not as good as a deck as i want it to be but u piloted it amazing
This is the first video I have watched that i hoped you went 0-5
SORRY TO DISAPPOINT *flexing arm emoji*

Brian “They can have Birgi”
Me “NO!!!”
Figured it out!
@@BoshNRoll Yea, I watched the whole video… at regular speed 😂 I’m a big fan of Lantern.
@@spyderman312 I salute your dedication. :)
"Shrine of Burning rage is at 36. It can almost win a game of EDH." 1:02:34
That top deck in game 3 of the last match was insaaaaaane, think Glimmervoid might help with some of the mana issues?
@BoshNRoll R1G1 11:30 They had bolt, bolt snap bolt which is 9, plus the 2 from attacking with snap, which you could remove taking 1 damage instead of the 2. So that is 11 or 10. Did i miss some other source of damage?
Nah I probably just counted wrong.
Disgusting, I love it. I remember getting so salty back in the day, but now this is just nostalgia
Opt was legal during 2015-16 modern, but so was gitaxian probe, serum visions, and thought scour, which are just better cantrips for most decks
Opt wasn't legal until ixalan, so no that's wrong.
Round three should you float mana and find map and crack for white source
It won the pro tour in like 2017 or 2018 too
you kept talking about wanting to fetch mox opal with saga, would mox tantalite work like that because it might be a good include
Saga only gets cards that cost 0 or 1 exactly. Tantalite’s mana value is zero, but it has no printed mana cost so Saga can’t get it.
!!!!! That Bridge draw at 1:44:20!!
You can tell at a glance exactly which matches you win or lose by which chapters last 30+ minutes.
Been a year any new tech for this deck?
Is memory lapse or even lapse in certainty good here it puts things on top the deck or a couple cards down ?
That's a cool on-theme idea, but being an Ensnaring Bridge deck you really can't afford to play any cards you can't dump from your hand at will. That rules out basically every counterspell. :(
@@BoshNRoll rip mox opal but thanks for the interaction bosh !!!! Love your content!
So I was thinking about Academy ruins in the deck, and I had two thoughts on mana fixing rocks:
1) Something like prophetic prism or golden egg, drawing a card on etb and is mana fixing instead of the second talismin of resilience.
Egg + spire becomes 5 mana gain 2 life, which may be relevent against decks like burn. Prism makes it much easier to play through Blood moon etc.
2) Navigator's Compass (Urza's Saga target) mana fixing, that gains 3 life on etb. Or maybe Chromatic star/Sphere, as 1 time use mana fixing that draws a card.
I spend a lot of time thinking about mana rocks, eggs and filtering. It's very important to me. So if anyone has some thoughts, I'd *love* to hear them.
Thank you for reading this far ^-^
3rd round first game: could have searched for the map and pulled a land with the floating mana? but behind anyways.
Why didn't the burn deck, when he got you down to 1 life, just sac a mountain and lava dart you? Am I missing something?
Nvm...grafdiggers cage! What a beautiful card
Curious if this can be ported into legacy for more no-fun-ability.
Maybe some ports and wastelands to take them off mana early on while assembling the lock
Great to see Lantern being sort of back!
Whay it needs is an ensnaring bridge for casting
God, I love me some lantern control.
Deck was kinda falling out of favor due to being a worse whirza and then opal got banned and I haven't seen it until saga
Did you concede too early in match one, game one? At 11:46 you see 3 bolts and a snapcaster when you are at 12, but then you get to take a bolt. Bolt+ bolt+ snapcaster/ bolt = 9, not 12? They would need to draw another snapcaster or their last bolt, or swing twice though your bridge.
I'm willing to believe that happened.
@@BoshNRoll You play a ton of wildly different decks in different formats every day, don't worry about little things like that! Thanks for the great content like always!
I had to re-watch 11:46 as well Brian is the first to admit he can't count.
I'd be far too tempted to add Life from the Loam 😋
I play Karn great creator and have a crucible of worlds in it. I play it as lantern control and if the lock is coming in too slow, just beat them to death with constructs
Lantern players went to play KCI and lantern started falling off and the mox opal ban really hurt.
you can tell which rounds you lose just by looking at the time stamps lol
Life hack
It was Zac Elsik!
someone can explan me how this deck active Academy Ruins ? i see no blue mana
Spire of industry
@@mutant9137 wow .... I was reading wrong this card OMEGALUL
Btw this 61 special is the LINDSAYWAKER list.
This deck really fell off once it became part of meta once people realized it was something that needed dedicated sideboard slots for it just got hated out it was like dredge it's position in the meta was half determined by how many people were playing it. The banning of mox opal made it unplayable for a long time as well even after it fell off in the meta, it's a shame to i fell in love the original 75 and I have to say this has and will always be my favorite deck building concept
I found that entertaining in a strange, glad-I-wasn't-the-one-experiencing-it kinda way.
Yeah it’s basically no fun to be winning with or losing against this deck but it’s awesome that it’s a set of interactions that add up to a viable strategy. Magic is so cool.
My favorite deck. If only whir was still a viable build.
This is some heinous gameplay. Magic as Richard Garfield intended it
When you had the surgical playing against stone forge why didn’t you look at the deck 😂
I don't know why you aren't playing Glimmervoid. Without it, I don't think you have enough blue sources to run Academy Ruins effectively, and white can also be a little tight for prismatic ending.
There’s 4 Spires which replace Glimmervoid as a more stable version of the same thing. Glimmervoid was risky even back when the deck was full of zeros. You could probably play 1 or 2 somewhere. Activating ruins was an issue for sure. You never want it to be your first/only land though
@@BoshNRoll that's fair, and glimmervoid is certainly much less necessary when you aren't playing a whir build. I'd still probably run 2 in this list though, or just cut ruins for something else.
Scenario challenge: Construct a scenario where cracking Pyxis is the correct play.
Mox opal ban was big
Why is this deck not playing glimmervoid?
It used to. Then spire if industry was printed. Sometimes they can destroy your early artifacts. Especially now without Opal
not sure if you noticed but, you mentioned your first opponent probably takes the game seriously, p sure that was Wafo-Tapa 😂
Haha then yeah he's pretty serious xD
Prismatic Ending and Hammer Time being the best white spells and deck respectively probably make this deck even weaker in the current meta game.
I kinda miss Lantern, but the thing is,. Leyline of Sanctity just slaughter this deck...
That's why most GB lists run things like Assassin's Trophy mainboard, and why UB runs a secondary win-con in ThopterSword Urza combo.
The mox opal banning is was knocked the deck down a tier
Rip you figured it out round 2
i think leaving blue was a huge mistake for lantern, emry is just to good of value piece for the deck
I hate this deck SO much, but it's so interesting to see when you're not across from it.
It feel off because Mox Opal was banned.
This deck is wayyyy better with karns in the main and leylines and witchbane in the board
4 mana is a bit greedy for this deck. The Tron control deck by surrussus_mtg has the karns but they have Tron lands. Having cards stuck in your hand is hard for a bridge deck. Same counts for leyline. Drawing a 4 drop is rough when you are hiding behind bridge.
Saga will die after a couple of turns so you are only playing 16 actual lands.
Been playing against someone who built Lantern Control in Pauper.
The archetype is miserable no matter what format it is in.
BTW, your mic seems blown out this video. You're louder than usual and it ain't quality loud.
I hate this deck so much that I even hated watching you play it.
Your feelings are valid.
I think that is is the worse version of the deck. I think with whir the deck is way better. Plus the mana base in this deck is pretty bad
Id ban the F out of that patreon for even asking to play this cancerous archetype .its the definition of “magic’s unsportsmanship” . you shouldnt promote that
I understand that the deck is not everyone's definition of fun. I am also a believer in the sanctity of tournament play. Anyone who pays their money and tries to win their matches however they want is fair game. Someone who brings lantern control to a casual table is a psycho. In tournament play though, you bought your seat and you can use it how you want.
I only watched match 3 so I could see this obnoxious pile of garbage get dumpstered
mox opal got banned
the top deck ensnaring bridge in the last game was just 💋🤌
