This reminds me that they had to record cover versions of these songs for the first game because they didn't have the rights, I guess. Then it made bank and the record companies couldn't license the songs fast enough

Guys just stop. They put covers in to avoid copyright and getting sued. To be honest if Harmonix and activison didn't put those covers in, There would not be guitar hero 3 and more
That wasn't the reason. It was an artistic choice. They used the original recordings in later games because people were complaining about the covers being bad.
This is how i first heard the song not knowing it was a cover. I felt betrayed when I listened to the original lol. The vocals on this cover are so mediocre.

Yeah, tracks that are written "As Made Famous By" are covers. Otherwise it's licensed or original songs.

I remember back in 2004 when I was 7 and this song came out, and then I saw the video on VH1 and I had no idea what the Hell was going on. Good times.

You can tell it’s a cover, the real versions of the songs didn’t come in until Gh3
Believe ot or not, GH3 did have some Wavegroup covers! I do prefer these over the masters though! They are great!
Real version came with 360 version of guitar hero 2 , exclusive songs for that version that didnt included on the ps2 version.
