Have you checked the electronics? Might need some recapping to bring out the low ends
Did you ever figure out a fix to this? I am having the same issues, wow and flutter and the clicking alike.
Hey, not yet, but I am tempted to have another look. It's not a particularly decent mechanism so maybe it can never be 'great' but maybe I'll have another stab at it.

did you figure out how to correct the muffled sound? I have the same problem!
I think it is one of 3 things - the tape head is worn, some of the capacitors are below par, or it just never sounded great as it's a budget player. I haven't been able to improve it further :(
I have a Walkman that uses the same mech except the capstan is brass. One thing I learned about this mech is that it's belt sensitive. I noticed the motor/capstan belt vibrated. Could that be the cause?

I would get some new belts they do not look like they are quality belts the ones from china are not even and make every thing sound terrible with lots of wow and flutter .in the uk i use the ebay seller that sells decktech branded belts these have all been great quality .
