When I was a kid, sixty five years ago, growing up in South Canterbury, we used to sometimes visit this area to see the drawings. No one outside of the farm really knew of the existence of these drawings. No one cared! Now look. I really think local Maori were oblivious of these markings. Are they Maori??. Interestingly, when I worked on the Chatham Island these markings were quite similar to the Moriori ones I saw there. Suddenly now, every man and his dog wants to venerate these "then dark" hardly visible carbon markings on a "clay?" wall in South Canterbury.

This art has more in common with melanesian style art than maori art.
