How do you overcome red light fever?

Thank you for making this video. I’m trying to record for a recital . I’ve been working on a song for two months and its really good when I sing it but in my mini studio it sounds like I ignored all my practice and it so far it sucks. I’m taking a break from it so hopefully when I return I can be more comfortable and get a good recording.

Thanks for watching. A break is a really good idea, but the main thing is, that if you make a mistake don't think about it, just move on. We all make mistakes, if you can train yourself not to worry about making mistakes, you will make less for sure :)

Thank you very much for this! I just recorded an album during the lockdown and hit the imposter syndrome brick wall quite a few times. Especially doing all the playing, recording and mixing myself … Sometimes a deadline can help too! :D But mostly, as you say, relaxing, somehow plugging into your confidence. Happy moments when that kicks in!! Cheers!

Tbanks for this. I just went into the studio for the very first time last week to record some original songs. I’m an intermediate player, at best, but I knew my own songs well. Could I record them? Not for love or money. Finally, like you suggested, I pulled out my lyric sheet to follow along and that helped. But, so far, I have recorded a poor representation of what I can do when I’m alone practicing. Back to the studio next weekend to work on more material … and maybe try to fix what I’ve already done. 😬😬😬

Thanks for your message! You are not alone, the secret is in relaxation, but that is easier said than done! good luck with your next session!

The more you record, the less red light fever you’ll have. Practicing the material during the week and hitting the studio on the weekend helps reduce red light fever as well.

I find the opposite is true. The more takes I do the more flustered and picky I become, and small things which wouldn't have mattered on the first take become unacceptable. I've been recording for 20+ years too (I'm actually an engineer), so it doesn't really go away.
I'm great at getting other people in the zone, but not myself.

Why not do what we all did back in the day - 'drop ins'. It was absolutely normal to 'drop in' right notes, even phrases at the end of a recording session?

I want to do vocals but can’t go near a microphone

Sorry to hear that you have a barrier to doing what you'd like to do. What do you feel when you think about going to sing at a microphone?
