I had an old giant CRT at the time I first got my DC, and the size and position of the built-in speakers produced an interesting phenomenon I'll never forget. The deep bassy sound it makes at the end of the boot up sound? It would cause the entire plastic housing of the TV to vibrate and produce a weird resonance. I had to crank the TV down before that or else it would wake my parents. When I got a newer CRT (that supported modern inputs and not just RF!!) that was no longer an issue. Dreamcast, one of my favorite consoles of all time. Miss the good old days playing on this last Sega console. Sure, Sega developed multiple games on other platforms but it don't feel good in some or another way. The first console I bought and played in generation 6. Later on, the Xbox, PS2 and GameCube were also a part of my collection. If I'm honest, generation 6 was probably the best console generation ever. I wish Sega had the money to make a new console but unfortunately this is wishful thinking due to the financial health of Sega. Nintendo should consider to buy Sega and develop a successor to the Switch. Nintendo has the money, they are rich, ridiculously and filthy rich. In the top 500 of Japanese companies with the most cash on hand, Nintendo is on number 1, even letting Sony (the whole corporation, not only the PlayStation division) bite the dust who are on the 4th place.
Well maybe you can take solace in the fact that Sega still, publishes fantastic games for example, Alien Isolation!!! They don't get ANY better than that one!!!
I remember reading a preview section of Dreamcast magazine back in 1999 and seeing the screen shot for Castlevania with a female protagonist. That shot with the three headed snake. I didn't realize that it was cancelled. I guess I just forgot about following up on it. Thanks for jogging my memory! Great video!
About Streets of Rage 4: Apparently Core Design was developing it, but lost the name after they had believed that they were gonna be able to port it to not only the Dreamcast, but PS1 and N64. when Sega pulled the game license from them, they re-tooled the game, and it became Fighting Force. So technically we DID get Streets of Rage 4.
Shenmue 2 was cancelled in the US, while EU and JP got a proper release. This hurt, not just from not getting to play it on the DC, but because that meant we couldn't use the save data carry over from 1 to 2. We wouldn't get to do this until the new HD versions.
onaretrotip Sega wanted to do but Lucasarts cancelled cause they didnt want to overshadow Episode I which came after game came out also they don't like joy :(
Wow, I can't believe that Dragon's Crown was intended for Dreamcast originally. I can only be glad that it made it's way to us eventually, such a phenomenal game. Geist Force does look really interesting... a shame that it has been left without its finishing polish. I may look into getting a copy of Propeller Arena too.
Yeah, crazy! Geist Force looks like it had so much potential, it's a crying shame that they couldn't round off the edges. It would have been well-suited to the Dreamcast. Grab a repro of Propeller Arena mate, it's great fun. Thanks, Wayne!
It was likely ported to be released back in 1999 or early 2000. Mostly 1999 It was completely finished and Namco decide their decision to cancelled it, and also don't forget about PAC-MAN World 1 is also planned to be on the Dreamcast and Nintendo 64 and Windows too and they were cancelled for unknown reasons.
Jeremy Robertson um yes it is, look on the page and search it up there were rumors of Time Crisis II version being planned on the Dreamcast by development and it was cancelled, look it on IGN, SegaRetro. Not the Wikipedia.
The thing is, although there might be a lot more games, they have to have a) enough interesting information available, and b) have enough footage and/or images to show. I picked these fifteen as the most interesting that had these qualities.
I find it odd that Half-Life for the Dreamcast wasn't mentioned in this otherwise awesome video. Half-Life was also a completed title and featured enhanced graphics from the PC release. Valve canceled its release AFTER the game went gold because "they didn't want to spend the money to market the game!" Two weeks after the cancellation, the devs put the ISO up online because they were angry it was canceled and wanted people to actually experience all of their hard-work.
Well, technically it was mentioned, as I showed it at the start of the video. I guess I just thought that most people were aware of it. It's great fun though! Shame it never emerged, I'm not surprised that the devs were so pissed. It must be maddening to see all that hard work go to waste.
What?! Actually, Half-Life for DreamCast was officially released. I bought it, played it, and finished it. It is just that it was released for PC instead. I was so glad when it was eventually cancelled for DreamCast, because I wanted to play it, and I was furious when I initially heard that it was going to be exclusive to a console.
I wish Sega's _Star Wars Trilogy Arcade_ and Capcom's _Red Earth_ got physical releases. Capcom released so many fighters on the Dreamcast, I'm amazed they skipped over this game and Sega/LucasArts' Star Wars game is baffling since it was released just months before the DC so it would have made an amazing launch title.
I remember reading that Shinobi was initially in development for Dreamcast, before SEGA went 3rd party & shifted development to PS2, not unlike how Toe Jam & Earl 3 was in development for DC before it was ported & developed for the Original Xbox.
If there was any abandoned dreamcast game I'd want to be released it had to be Agartha. Just the survival-horror aspect of it in a remote setting with people around that you can make decisions about to change the story was so interesting to me. I wanted to know more about the environment and how the setting came to be after going through some of the cutscenes released. Heck I got so hooked on just the concepts left around by Agartha that I created a story inspired by it for my final college writing project. I really do wish that more of the game will be uncovered but those chances seem impossible at this point. :(
Good stuff. I've always felt that if the Dreamcast would have been kept afloat for just ONE extra year longer, they could have almost doubled the amount of great games that the system ended up with. I remember being very pissed at all the canned titles.
Thanks, Jason! Definitely. The Dreamcast ran for many more years in Japan and during that time some absolutely amazing titles were released, that pushed the hardware far more than before.
@@onaretrotip I don't think it's on their, I was a subscriber until the magazines end and never played it, would of loved to of tried it on the DC at the time.
Originally, The Lost World: Jurassic Park arcade game was announced to be ported to the Dreamcast with all the scrapped levels included in 1999. 2 years later, in 2001, the port was cancelled
onaretrotip should of been ported since thinking about supporting the console from discontinuation. Would been a great adventure title for it and be 1st Crash Game on Sega console port
That was so awesome Pete, loved it, so professionally done! I've always had a huge fascination with cancelled games and being able to get hold of some of them is just the best thing ever. Thanks to the incredible group that is Galaxy Sega of course, I'm very lucky to now have copies of Half Life 2, Propeller Arena, Ecco the Dolphin 2 and Toejam & Earl 3. I also remember playing the N64 prototype of Glover 2 and I actually didn't know there was a planned Streets of Rage 4 but I agree that it would need to stay faithful to the first 3 if it was to officially be made! A lot of other games there that I didn't know about and so great to know you can get hold of a lot of them and play them on your Dreamcast. This could so easily be shown on TV as it's so well done! 👍
Ah, thanks so much mate. Yeah, it's awesome that we can get to actually play a lot of these games, there are a few more I want to grab. Propeller Arena is a particular favourite, great fun! Thanks, Dan.
Another great video Pete, I'd have loved an Ecco sequel, I was blown away by the first Dreamcast Ecco game at the time. Glad to see Half-Life got a repro, when I finally get round to buying for my Dreamcast I'll have to get a copy : )
Thanks, Daron! Yeah Half-Life is entirely playable, but you really need to use the keyboard and mouse because it's almost impossible with a controller. Ecco II you can get too, I have a repro of that as well, but it's really raw and unfinished, so it's more of a tech demo.
Another awesome video Pete I was so looking forward to the release of Argatha and giestforce and remember keep track of the games in the magazines, I didn't know a castlevania was planned for Dreamcast 😳
Thanks, Scott! Agartha looks wicked mate, what a shame. And Geist Force had so much potential, the Dreamcast could have really done with a game like that. It was perfect for the console. Such a shame that they didn't get it polished up and finished.
Thanks, Nick! Yeah, Propeller Arena is great fun, and a really well-made game. So sad, as it was finished and ready to play. At least we can play it now so it's not gone entirely unappreciated.
Great video dude! I played Geist Force and Toejam and Earl on the channel and I really like both of them. Also I heard once that Fighting Force was supposed to be Streets of Rage 4, but I don't know if it's true or not.
Thanks, Marcus! Shame Gesit Force wasn't more polished as it had so much potential. Yeah, I heard that too about Fighting Force, so I believe that's true.
Are you talking to me? As I said at the start of the video, these are just fifteen of the many cancelled games, there are at least three times that many. So I didn't "miss" any, I just chose these fifteen.
Great video Pete! The fact that most of these games never appeared on a different platform is saying something. Of these the loss of Propellor Arena is the most tragic. Ace Combat 4 was released in the US in November 2001 and also featured cities with skyscrapers to crash into! I understand why they made the call to cancel the game. However I suspect in a business sense, it wasn't the hardest call to make.
Thanks, Erwin! Definitely a crying shame that Propeller Arena was cancelled, that's the saddest of them all I think. Especially seeing as it was finished!
Great job as always. Surprised you did not mention Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse. I remember it was getting much cover on ODCM, including ads and articles. Although it did come out on ps2, it was nothing like what was planned for the DC. I would love to hear the story behind its cancellation
@@onaretrotip this one is interesting. The one that came out on Dreamcast was supposed to be a third person view instead of the over the head view we got on the PS2.
Wow, i didnt know anything in this video, thats why i watch your videos pete, always a great source of information, and i love learning about new things i didnt know, some of it makes sence, like glover, that makes alot of sence, but i didnt know it lol
Ah, thanks so much Paul, that's great to hear. Some of them it makes perfect sense that they were canned, but some it's such a shame. Propeller Arena especially as it was finished, and it's great fun!
I’m glad that we now have access to early, or in some cases finished builds, of some of these canceled games now. I never would’ve thought in my wildest dreams I would get to play that E3 build of Castlevania: Resurrection!
Love stuff like this as you can see what could have been. I agree with you I wouldn't want to see a Streets of Rage like the one you mentioned here. I would love to see Sega treat Streets of Rage like Sonic Mania. Great video as always and will be taking a peek into the repro scene for stuff like this
Activision's 1999 Space Invaders game was supposed to get a Dreamcast version. It would have been cool. Just imagine: 60fps and the PSX version's special effects. I don't know if it would have been like that, but all I know is the only evidence of development was in some magazine in 2000 that listed Space Invaders under upcoming Dreamcast games. It's a shame.
Streets of Rage 4 was eventually re-worked and made into Fighting Force and Fighting Force 64 on the 64. It was a pretty fun game. Kinda short, but I played it multiple times.
I have heard there was to be a port to the Dreamcast of the arcade game "Savage Quest" by Interactive Light. Is this true, and if so, how far along did it get?
Enjoyed that, Pete. Had no idea that a Streets of Rage game was due on the Dreamcast. Understandable how Propeller Arena was held back but that's a shame because it looks really good. Take the Bullet also looks like something I would have given a go to back in the day and Picasso sounds intriguing as well.
Thanks, Alex! Glad you enjoyed it mate. Yeah, such a shame that Propeller Arena got canned because it's great fun. Take The Bullet looks like it had potential as well, the Dreamcast needed more games like that.
yeah, i've only seen videos of it but it looks awesome... there was plans to bring wing war to the 32x at one point too. i saw a comment on streets of rage 4/fighting force, and i just want to add ff was meant to be a sor game early in dev but it was core's decision to change it and make it multi-platform... i've always felt the dynamite deka games should have been streets of rage 4-6.
Enjoyed this Pete. Love the DC it's one I never owned growing up but I think since getting a Naomi arcade cab it's pushed me to explore the system a lot more. Hellgate, Geist Force, Thunder Force VI all look like they could have been great games. I'm kind of glad SoR4 didn't get a release as if it flopped I doubt we would have had the interest for the release we had last year.
I didn't know about Dragon's Crown, cool, good thing it came out and I actually have it on PS3 and is a great game, I was kinda sad when Castlevania got cancelled and I thought they were gonna do it on PS2 since I was not a Dreamcast user, but they gave us the horrble PS2 games
Crystal’s Pony Tale 2, the sequel to the 1994 Sega Genesis game, was also planned for release on Sega Dreamcast in 1999 alongside Sonic Adventure. The sequel had a 3D open world environment which female players assume the protagonist as she rescues her pony friends from an evil wizard. Sadly, the project was scrapped and abandoned. Screw you, Power Stone. Screw you, Capcom.
Alien Resurrection info from Martin Piper: Martin:A Sega Saturn version of Alien Resurrection was being worked on, as far as I recall no Dreamcast version. The Saturn version failed when the programmer was found to be wasting time by trying to hand code everything as one huge assembly file. It failed to progress beyond a technical demo, not a surprise really
What is it about the Dreamcast that we all love so much? Maybe its the little underdog thing. Maybe it's the type of games. Or maybe its just that Sega was such a big part if my life for so many years. I need to get a Dreamcast again even if to just sit on my shelf so i can look at it from time to time like a loved trophy.
God knows. A lot of it for me is nostalgia. I had just moved out of home (at 19) in the year 2000, and one of my flatmates had a Dreamcast. Great memories, and many all-nighters playing Soul Calibur, Power Stone, etc.
that "take the bullet" seems to be stealing off from Blood 2's engine, aim crosshair, and that machine gun which looks EXACTLY like the one held by Caleb in blood 2
The plot is so unorthodox and unlike anything ive heard of for a game. Its such a shame I overlooked the dreamcast and didnt give it a chance in 1999, i was a staunch Playstation kid, and went for the N64 instead. I shouldve chose the DC.
Brilliant video Pete. I never had a dreamcast back in the day but always wanted one, Ive recently inherited one and may look into getting some of the after market shooters. Gunlord looks interesting too!
Thanks, Joe! Ah, that's awesome mate. Gunlord is awesome, it reminds me of Turrican quite a bit. And some of the more recent shooters are good. The best shooters are in the Japanese library though, like Under Defeat and (my favourite) Zero Gunner 2. If the prices put you off you can get repros from the guy in the video description. I''d advise against getting repros of the newer indie games though as it's better that we support the developers still making Dreamcast games. Great meeting you at Donny by the way, will have to have a proper chat next time.
that 3d SoR and yeah your comments that you hope it a true SoR4 would be 2D came true and beautifully so. We may have had to wait a long time for a true sequel but it finally happened and was superb. :)
Another canceled Dreamcast game was one of SEGA's best arcade racers in the late '90's and that was Scud Race/SEGA Super GT. It only came out on the Dreamcast as a tech demo of what the game would look like and to show what the Dreamcast graphics are capable of, really sad that the game had to get canceled for the Dreamcast though as it's a really fun racer from the arcade and it would of probably helped the Dreamcast sell even more well. I also wish DAYTONA USA 2 could of got a port to the Dreamcast as well other than DAYTONA USA 2001 that we got instead.
The Furthest Man From Home And the point is SEGA right now just wants to forget about two of their best arcade racers of the late '90's (Scud Race and DAYTONA USA 2) rather than giving us what we, us fans want and what we want is a console port of those two games in HD and with online. I just wish and hope that one day they would port them but I also doubt that at same time, it was Scud Race's 20th Anniversary last year and they didn't even think to do something about it then, and next year is going to be DAYTONA USA 2's 20th, doubt SEGA will do something for that either.
The Furthest Man From Home Exactly, and the new 'so called DAYTONA USA sequel' (DAYTONA Championship USA) is absolutely terrible and a mock of the original game to trolls us fans, when they announced the game at first when it at the 3 in the title they made us think that they were actually gonna give us a 'true sequel' to the first two games until they showed us the trailer revealing that it's a horribly remaster of the original with bad controls and taking the 3 off the title to troll us fans.
I was hoping that '"Dee Dee Planet" was going to appear on this list, it was a very simplistic 2D Robot arena game that was already finished 100% but was cancelled at the last minute due to a network bug that the game had. SEGA still has the game in their archive as seen in a picture online. There's a promotional video on youtube as well as some footage of the booth it had at Spaceworld I believe.
Still a lot to love about it! Hmm, not entirely sure, but guess it was a (poor) design choice from Sega. Games like Quake and Half-Life are borderline unplayable with a controller.
"The Ocean Hunter" arcade game was rumoured to have had a Dreamcast Port planned, it's not clear why it was cancelled but there weren't many light gun games on the dreamcast to begin with, the fact that Sega didn't release the official dreamcast light gun in the US due to the Columbine Massacre probably didn't help it's chances of a getting a port, shame really.
onaretrotip Same here a absolutely love every single last thing about the DC bar the controller a mean it looks nice and all plus the VMU screen was/is revolutionary but the placement of the analogue stick for me is way off and causes me thumb to ache real bad after a few minutes of play it's so frustrating it doesn't stop me playing on the thing all day & night though
@@onaretrotip I got NBA 2K, Chu Chu Rocket, and Test Drive Le Mans, all pretty good games for their genres. I was watching your video for advice on getting some cancelled games for it, and a couple of these look like games worth getting discs of. Thank you
What about Air NiGHTS? it was to be a sequel to NiGHTS into Dreams on the Saturn, slated for the Dreamcast, and also had a Motion-Control peripheral developed for use on the game( Which later became the maracas for Samba de Amigo). Ultimately the game was canceled, but it was later released on the Nintendo Wii as NiGHTS Journey of Dreams
Neither did I. It is just my assumption and nothing more. Shinobi was one of Sega's essential franchises in early 90's so I think they wanted to continue it on their new gen console like Sonic, Virtua Fighter, Phantasy Star or Ecco. But since Dreamcast support was stopped by the time they made those games. Sega probably thought they wouldn't make money by releasing them on Dreamcast, so they released them on PS2. I don't have any evidence though.
It's always interesting hearing about games that could've come to certain consoles, it's a bit like hearing about actors that were once considered for iconic roles, in the same way this game list could've put the DC in a whole different light. Titles like Dragons Crown, D-Jump and Geist Force could've taken the DC down a different road, but then at the same time Propeller Arena feels very suited to the console. Sega America being unaware of Streets of Rage?! Seems very suspicious to me, either that or someone was just really shit at their job.
Yeah, I think Dragon's Crown especially would have made a big impact, and Geist Force if it was properly polished and finished. D-Jump looks very interesting. Propeller Arena is great fun, what a shame it got canned as it was finished and ready to go. Haha, yeah I find that hard to believe too, it's one of their most popular franchises for fuck's sake. But from what I hear about the staff at Nintendo during the whole Sky Skipper project business, they were unaware of a lot of their own classic franchises too, so maybe it's not uncommon.
sadly my dreamcast & all my games & stuff for it got lost when i moved last August & i don't have enough money to buy it all back all over again! i am so saddened that it's hard just watching this video or anything dreamcast related because it just makes me hate myself that i lost my entire dreamcast collection! meh!.... 😫😢😭
@@onaretrotip i know i had some quite harder to find games!! aswell & a cool controller in a rare color!! that was among just some of the stuff lost in my collection! i actually teared up losing my Dreamcast collection because the system i had for ever my Mom((who passed away mid last March!)) bought/purchased it for me after working overtime at her job to afford it! when the Dreamcast as a whole was just barely starting to appear to be on it's way out of stores & favour from being outsold by PS2! & i had that same exact Dreamcast system throughout the years was always hooked-up somewhere on a TV in my house! & was just one system/console i couldn't not have hooked-up! & ready to play!... so much so the Dreamcast system/console itself started turning a dark yellowish color but still worked like a champ! so losing not only my Dreamcast but my entire collection for it to boot! really upset me!... but if anyone wants to start a gofundme page to help get me a replacement Dreamcast collection back! feel free! lolz!! just joking! but i can't lie that would be pretty sweet if something like that happened because i want my Dreamcast collection back so desperately bad! & just don't have the money to do so!.... NO! video-game system/console even closely captured my heart & attention like the Dreamcast did! even long after it's shelf lifespan was long gone! & other systems/consoles out did it technology wise like graphics & ect. i still thought it was the best ever & still do! expecially when you consider all the much more potential & possibilities & more of an impact it could have had! had it been to be able to survive all it's competition! & sad to see that one of the things that helped do it in is something you can barely giveaway today which is DVD's because PS2 acted as a DVD Player & the cheapest one of that time & that you got a gaming console & dvd player all in one i think really hurt the Dreamcast which sucked because at the time i couldn't care less about DVD capability which everyone i knew with a ps2 was bragging about i was fine with my Dreamcast & still using a VCR! to watch movies or whatever if need be! infact i liked VHS Tapes better than DVD's & still do! hahaha!!.... maybe i am just an oddball! anyways! sorry for the rambling it's just talking about losing my Dreamcast & entire Dreamcast-Collection really got me emotionally excited both good! & bad!... & i guess i shared a bit too much! haha!... ❤😉✌
Thanks, Lee! Yeah, it is a shame, but at least a handful of dedicated people are still making games for them. Well, the Mega Drive and Dreamcast at least.
The ones i was most gutted about was Colin McRae Rally 2.0 & Emergency Ambulance. Messiah looked interesting too. Great video, didnt know about some of these.
Not heard of Emergency Ambulance; what kind of game is that? Colin McRae would have been well-suited to the Dreamcast, that's a shame. Thanks, Adam, glad you enjoyed it.
Emergency Ambulance is an arcade game Sega made where you have to get from point a to b before your patient dies. One of the UK DC mags reported that Emergency Ambulance, Brave Firefighters & Jambo Safari were all gonna come out on 1 disc but never did.
I really wish I could find someone who makes the Half-Life PAL version you have, the case and everything looks perfect and I really want it. Unfortunately, every other repro I've seen is in a different style or a completely different, non PAL case and it's stopping me from purchasing it :(
Just buy one from Gary who made mine. A link to his Flickr gallery is in the description, and you can e-mail him at dreamcasting@btinternet.com to request a price list or put in an order.
Thank you! I got one from him, it looks great! I did notice a minor typo on the back (Dead QUAD instead of Death squad) but I'll live. The overall design looks fantastic and it's very impressive.

Ha, nice. Off to a good start then, Daniel ;)

2:44 D-Jump! I loved how that game looked - and indeed, it had some LBA flavor to it. The character design and the poses were so expressive.
Yes, really unique style I think (sort of LBA meets the West Indies).
@@onaretrotip Btw, much like you, I consider LBA and Day of the Tentacle my favorites, the absolute top of the mid-90s.

@@IndignantSkeptic wait I'm so confused??
First off half life Came out in 1998 on PC, a year before the Dreamcast came out
I'm happy streets of rage 4 is coming back and will be released this year
Alexandre Elkhoury Yeah, let’s hope it lives up to expectations.
Yeah, shame Red Earth never got a console release.
Makes me happy that Geist Force got some love on this list :D
:)
I remember reading that Shinobi was initially in development for Dreamcast, before SEGA went 3rd party & shifted development to PS2, not unlike how Toe Jam & Earl 3 was in development for DC before it was ported & developed for the Original Xbox.
Interesting... Doesn't surprise me, seeing as it's a big franchise for Sega.
Guernicaman ya imagine playing shinobi on the Dreamcast lol
Man, if only the Dreamcast lasted another year. Some of these may have eventually been released.
Yeah, I know right. It had such a short lifespan (well, official Western lifespan anyway).
They almost had GTA 3 as an exclusive title!
Agreed. It looks really interesting, and the Dreamcast needed more games like that.
Prototype of the game.
Former developers released it last year:
mega.nz/#%21fRQ0xb4Q%21T-U6RO2Jkj4Y3Kuvgy8BCZejKUGg13IRkO6g6uDZBTQ
I had a demo disc that I believe was from the official DC magazine that had a playable demo of LoK Soul Reaver 2 on it. I wish I could find it now!
Oh nice! I actually have all of those demo discs in the collection, so I'll have to dig it out.
👍
Crash Bandicoot The Wrath of Cortex was going to be ported on Dreamcast in 2001 fast during to the ceased of Dreamcast from Sega
Ah, interesting! Hadn't heard about that, but makes sense considering they were porting them to the other sixth gen systems.
onaretrotip should of been ported since thinking about supporting the console from discontinuation. Would been a great adventure title for it and be 1st Crash Game on Sega console port
Great video Pete. So glad the community behind the Dreamcast cares enough to make physical releases for some of these never released games.
Thanks, Ryan! Yeah, it's awesome, there's some serious passion in the Dreamcast community. So many new games this year alone!
Nice video ! It's so sad all these games were canceled :(
Thanks! Yeah, in most cases it is a real shame.
Another awesome video Pete
I was so looking forward to the release of Argatha and giestforce and remember keep track of the games in the magazines, I didn't know a castlevania was planned for Dreamcast 😳
Thanks, Scott! Agartha looks wicked mate, what a shame. And Geist Force had so much potential, the Dreamcast could have really done with a game like that. It was perfect for the console. Such a shame that they didn't get it polished up and finished.
it is a crime that Princess Crown has never been released outside Japan
damn shame
Absolutely criminal.
Wasn't there a port of System Shock 2 for the Dreamcast in development that got canceled?
Yeah, someone found a beta on a dev kit. Imagine that on Dreamcast!
Man, the dreamcast was such a missed opportunity it's sad
What about Hiryu no Ken for Sega Dreamcast? Is it cancelled?
Dreamcast biggest nail in the coffin was not having a dvd player on the system. That would have made dream cast work out
Yes, that was a huge factor. It was a cheap way to get a DVD player, just like the PS3 ended up being a cheap way to watch blu-rays.
@@onaretrotip very true
@@justworkingfortheweekend8504 surprised Sega gambled on online play over DVD, after the failure of the Saturn Netlink
Great video as usual Pete! Propeller Arena always made me sad, since it really looked like the kind of game that could make the system sing.
Thanks, Nick! Yeah, Propeller Arena is great fun, and a really well-made game. So sad, as it was finished and ready to play. At least we can play it now so it's not gone entirely unappreciated.
There was a great arcade game out at that time “jet wings” that would have probably gave that game some real value to the system
Hey man just newly discovered your channel and binge watching the cancelled games series. Amazing content!
Thank you very much. Welcome!
You forgot Colin McRae Rally 2.0 !
Are you talking to me? As I said at the start of the video, these are just fifteen of the many cancelled games, there are at least three times that many. So I didn't "miss" any, I just chose these fifteen.
There's actually a full playable rom of toejam and Earl for dreamcast
I'm 10 and I love toejam and earl bcs I rediscovered it on my X arcade
Great video Pete! The fact that most of these games never appeared on a different platform is saying something. Of these the loss of Propellor Arena is the most tragic. Ace Combat 4 was released in the US in November 2001 and also featured cities with skyscrapers to crash into! I understand why they made the call to cancel the game. However I suspect in a business sense, it wasn't the hardest call to make.
Thanks, Erwin! Definitely a crying shame that Propeller Arena was cancelled, that's the saddest of them all I think. Especially seeing as it was finished!
Propeller arena... what a shame... (>__
What a waste :(
onaretrotip Yes, very sad story, that game is fantastic.
It's awesome there are dudes like you out there that still appreciate such a cool console, hats off to you bud.
Thanks a lot! It's an under-loved system that is still going strong today. The Dreamcast has had so many new games this year alone, it's insane!
onaretrotip Thanks to you 4 keeping a badass console alive bro.
My pleasure ;)
I gave my dreamcast away to a friend before I moved to college. I miss it, I should have kept it.

Try Redream
Great job as always. Surprised you did not mention Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse. I remember it was getting much cover on ODCM, including ads and articles. Although it did come out on ps2, it was nothing like what was planned for the DC. I would love to hear the story behind its cancellation
Thanks! Quite often I will discount games that came out on other systems, although admittedly not always.
Interesting video! I loved to watch so many curious works together. Thanks!
Thanks, Leonardo! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hearing that start up sound 🥺❤️

I’m glad that we now have access to early, or in some cases finished builds, of some of these canceled games now. I never would’ve thought in my wildest dreams I would get to play that E3 build of Castlevania: Resurrection!
Yeah, pretty cool!
Cool video mate, and thanks for the plug haha! 👍
Thanks, Tom! No, thank *you* for the footage mate.
gutted Half Life didn't make it to Dreamcast
Yeah, it seems a lot of people were really excited for it. It was talked about a great deal back in the day.
ElectricKingdom No boot disc is needed for this or most other games nowadays
The bad: Many interesting games cancelled.
The good: Lots of leaked demos to play and get a hands-on on said games.
Indeed! :)
Love stuff like this as you can see what could have been. I agree with you I wouldn't want to see a Streets of Rage like the one you mentioned here. I would love to see Sega treat Streets of Rage like Sonic Mania. Great video as always and will be taking a peek into the repro scene for stuff like this
Thanks, Dan! Totally agree, they need to give Streets of Rage the Sonic Mania treatment, that would be AMAZING!
that Agartha resamble cursed mountain for wii, its settings and its assets are very similar
Interesting...
Yeah, a shame that one was cancelled.
@@onaretrotip Did you know about that one?
Damn man, I really wished Streets Of Rage 4 came out, people have been asking for that shit for years now.
Me too. Just as long as it's 2D. People would go nuts for that, I have no idea why Sega haven't done it.
to be honest game looked like shit, if they did the with cel-shaded polygonal characters with a 2D gameplay that would be great
Yeah, it looked fucking terrible. Dodged a bullet there.
Streets of Rage 4 was eventually re-worked and made into Fighting Force and Fighting Force 64 on the 64. It was a pretty fun game. Kinda short, but I played it multiple times.
Fighting Force was fun ❗️
I have heard there was to be a port to the Dreamcast of the arcade game "Savage Quest" by Interactive Light. Is this true, and if so, how far along did it get?
I believe that's true, yes. There doesn't seem to be much information around so I'd imagine that it didn't get very far along in development.
I believe I have it
liar
Enjoyed that, Pete. Had no idea that a Streets of Rage game was due on the Dreamcast.
Understandable how Propeller Arena was held back but that's a shame because it looks really good. Take the Bullet also looks like something I would have given a go to back in the day and Picasso sounds intriguing as well.
Thanks, Alex! Glad you enjoyed it mate. Yeah, such a shame that Propeller Arena got canned because it's great fun. Take The Bullet looks like it had potential as well, the Dreamcast needed more games like that.
propeller arena reminds me a lot of wing war for the sega model 1...
I've not played that! Propeller Arena is jolly good fun though.
yeah, i've only seen videos of it but it looks awesome...
there was plans to bring wing war to the 32x at one point too.
i saw a comment on streets of rage 4/fighting force, and i just

was core's decision to change it and make it multi-platform...
i've always felt the dynamite deka games should have been

Yeah, I was researching the whole Fighting Force/SoR 4 thing for a follow-up to this video (on cancelled Saturn games). Interesting.
Thanks, Craig. Definitely some promising games here, but I agree it's for the best that 3D Streets of Rage never happened.
Those games are so cool! If the console had just one more year, that would've been great!
Definitely.
Dragon's Crown is awesome. Like you say, at least we got it eventually. I wonder if the Dreamcast Castlevania would have been any better? Who knows.
Just imagine getting an eyeful of the Sorceress a couple of years earlier before Dragon's Crown became a PS3 game!
Don’t forget that there was a cancelled simpsons game for the Dreamcast as well. An unreleased tech demo was posted on the internet late last year.
There were loads more than 15 cancelled Dreamcast games, quite a long list.
Great video, a lot of games I didn't know about here. Earned yourself a subscriber, mate.

LOL
Alien Resurrection info from Martin Piper:
Martin:A Sega Saturn version of Alien Resurrection was being worked on, as far as I recall no Dreamcast version.
Very well done mate, randomly stumbled upon this and am taken back.

Agartha looks INCREDIBLE
Yeah, it looks great. It's getting a release now I think.
The plot is so unorthodox and unlike anything ive heard of for a game. Its such a shame I overlooked the dreamcast and didnt give it a chance in 1999, i was a staunch Playstation kid, and went for the N64 instead. I shouldve chose the DC.
Propeller Arena was a real shame, I enjoyed the multiplayer when I got hold of a copy and it has that classic Sega Arcade feel.
Yeah, it's really good fun. Has that AM2 arcade feel, as you say.
Ahh yes Pete, was cool meeting you too sir, been watching your vids for sooo long now. Always good content! Quality!

Ah, didn't know that about Scud Race. Great game that, Dal (Retrogodfather) has the full-size cab at his place. It's a beast! Thanks, Dale.
Do repro’s work on all dream casts ?
I believe so, apart from maybe some of the really late models.
Oh, nice! I hadn't heard of that one. I just watched the video - it looks very strange, but interesting. Thanks for the info!
I loved the dreamcast. By why the hell didn't that controller have 2 joysticks. Playing quake 3 arena was the biggest pain on that thing
Oh wow, didn't know that was the reason the gun wasn't released over there!
Love that opening sound clip reminds me of how much I really enjoyed the Dreamcast maybe the most comfortable controller
Really? I'm not a huge fan of the controller, I must admit.
onaretrotip Same here a absolutely love every single last thing about the DC bar the controller a mean it looks nice and all plus the VMU screen was/is revolutionary but the placement of the analogue stick for me is way off and causes me thumb to ache real bad after a few minutes of play it's so frustrating it doesn't stop me playing on the thing all day & night though

Shinobi and Vampire Night developed by Sega and released in 2002 for PS2 I think were originally planned to be released on the Dreamcast
Oh yeah? Don't think I'd heard of a Shinobi on Dreamcast.
Ah, I see.
Was recently thinking about Chakan and wondered why they never made a sequel or rebooted it. Could do so much with it with today's technology.
Yeah, strange that they didn't do more with the concept.
onaretrotip I also didn't realize that it was licensed after an obscure comic book.
Core Design originally planned Herdy Gerdy for the Dreamcast, but found the CPU was too slow
Rumours of:Sonic Adventure International for the UK, using DC modem to download new tracks for Twinkle Circuit etc
I've read that the arcade light gun game of the lost world jurrasic park was going to be ported to the dreamcast but was also canceled.
Oh, nice. That would've been cool!

Sounds awesome, potentially. Like Crazy Taxi: Paramedic Edition.
Oh, great! Shame about the typo (I need to check mine now), but glad you're happy with it overall. They're very well made.
