  • Installing a Creative Encore DVD-ROM! Back in 1997 DVD tech was an huge step up from CDs. And the setup was a bit more involved than just plopping in a drive -- you needed an MPEG-2 card like the DXR2!

      WAit wait wait wait wait... Was that a reference to Steve from MRE Info with the "Nice hiss"? I once earlier thought (can't remember the exact video) you made the "Nice!" reference with jumpcut and all like what he does! Didn't say anything cause I thought I just overthought it back then and It couldn't possibly be a reference to a MRE reviewer of all things!

    Watching Clint use the button to close the tray made my day. As a young person I HATED when anyone would push on the CD tray to close it. It still makes me cringe. Not that you see people using optical media much anymore.

    • @_miyu
      @_miyu 6 лет назад +3

      Yup, that was my take away from this vid as well. My biggest pet peeve is pushing the tray to close. @AdmiralSpeedy any force used is bad for the internal gear. They made it do that cuz they knew most idiots would push it, so it better retract on pressure to mitigate damage. An electronic button that sends a signal to the motor is the preferred way. Even Open/Close command send from the software is better than pushing on the gear.

    • @PuffyRainbowCloud
      @PuffyRainbowCloud 6 лет назад

      My computer's optical drive doesn't even have a button, so I made one in software instead.

      Holy shit THANK YOU!!!
      I had a friend that would always shove the disc tray of my Xbox closed as if he was trying to shove Toothpaste back into the tube.
      Like holy fucking shit dude, it's a piece of plastic with some weak plastic gears and shitty motor, WTF are you forcing it shut for? Just press the fucking button and wait the extra 0.002 seconds for it to close FFS.

    • @AKATenn
      @AKATenn 6 лет назад

      They are designed to be closed with a push, what you're not supposed to do is give it more of a push than it needs to start closing on it's own, it won't hurt it more than normal wear unless you force it.

    • @_miyu
      @_miyu 6 лет назад +2

      @Hadwell - It's a gear and motor. It was NOT designed to close with a push. They made it activate with resistance so it will be less likely to break. When the gear encounters resistance they allowed it to send a safety signal to the motor. You can avoid this entirely by sending the signal directly with the button. BUTTONS are DESIGNED to be pushed.

    It does not shock me that going from Win98 to Win98SE fixed everything. Win98SE was a massive improvement behind the scenes and native DVD support was one of the categories that got the most of it. In fact, back in the day my upgrade from 98 to 98SE made my daily life a whole lot easier. I probably had about 95% less blue screens and freezes in general after the upgrade.

    • @snetmotnosrorb3946
      @snetmotnosrorb3946 6 лет назад +30

      For me it was the USB support that was the game-changer.
      As a young teen I thought 98 SE was just a cash-grab along the same lines as Plus! and ignored it without a second thought. Not until years later did I learn that it in fact incorporated significant changes under the hood and was the best DOS-based Windows. So much trouble I could have saved myself.

    • @AnnabelleTheRose
      @AnnabelleTheRose 5 лет назад +17

      Yeah Win98 First Ed. was a total train wreck. They had to rush SE out to fix a bunch of issues cos everyone was getting blue screens and also USB issues I remember. Of course this was pre-broadband too so you had to buy a new physical copy (from memory I think MS offered $$$ back deals for people who bought First Ed).

    • @shockwaveexp3465
      @shockwaveexp3465 6 лет назад +1

      FischOderAal I guess you got lucky, in Windows 10, drivers are automatically downloaded off Microsoft servers. However, it tends to download outdated versions, which had caused me a variety of video card driver crashes and sound pops. Even if you installed them manually yourself, Windows Update would keep bugging you to install the “latest” version of the driver. Unable to block Windows updates is a big no no for me. Luckily I don’t have to deal with that on Windows 7.

    • @ClayMann
      @ClayMann 6 лет назад

      Win2K as we called it was the first really stable Windows. At least for me and the people I knew. I was so reluctant to upgrade from that but Microsoft has this way of forcing upgrades. I honestly can't see what people are moaning about nowadays. The hardware is generally so good across the board and the OS's from everyone are stellar. At least compared to how it was win95 kinda days.
      Remember how you'd play a game for a while then get that itch to save because you knew it had been a while and you were due for a crash! lol its not like that anymore thank the broadband gods

      Those damn flat cables, the awful case designs of that era, fucking around with jumpers, fires from shitty PSU's that turned your PC into an actual F-18 that was slapped into every PC component box ever and so on.
      Times sure have gotten easier on that end. Good cases, no cables to be seen anywhere, good reliable components.
      I do kinda miss the cheesy designs on GPU boxes especially. Those continued pretty far into the 2000's but eventually disappeared. If your GPU box had a FLAMING DEMON DUDE on it, you knew it was fast.

      DVDs only displayed at 480p/576p for 30fps/25fps, and if you try getting 60fps/50fps then you'll have to use interlacing instead (which was never part of standardised PC resolutions) so you had to have a proper deinterlacer or else you would get that "flicker" (which is more like a shimmer, since it's different to CRT flicker) that he mentioned while watching the cutscenes in Claw.
      If you had set your monitor to 480p then it would probably look fine but most people used higher resolutions which is why they needed some kind of scaling.
