- The build has finally started and I am super excited! So far I had months of paperwork and waiting for the building permit. Now I am finally starting the build and it feels great to have made some progress. The groundwork was very enjoyable and I can reccomend anyone to try and do this themselves. It is a considerable saving and not as hard as it seems. The sand and the open space certainly made it easier.

Awesome video series 🙂 Super interesting. Really looking forward to the next part.
Thanks for watching! I love your videos too!
Massive advantage of being the first build on site is the unfettered access from all angles. Can't wait to see the rest of the build.
Thats one of my biggest achievements! I beat the German bureaucracy! : ) There are about 25 properties in this area and everyone was able to start applying for the permit on the same day. So far nobody else got it.
Its also nice and peaceful out there. No people, no noise. You can just work and Its never cramped.
@@MaxMakerChannel For now!
good for taking it on yourself but a word of advice for the loader operaptor, the buton with the wave on it is active bucket suspension, its meant to be used when you have a heavy load on the forks or in the bucket and you have to drive over rough or uneven ground, it is not for levelling ground in any capacity. secondly the bucket being used on the mini digger is a grading bucket meant for rough touch up not digging but seeing as its only sand i dont think it matters all too much, but if you encounter anything heavier than sand ie: clay, gravel, rocks, compacted soil or concrete you should use the buckets provided that are smaller and have teeth on them. with all that said i cant wait to see how this turns out, keep up the good work guys.
Cool project :D
Stocked to see more of this series
Edit: a little longer format videos would be amazing :)
More to come!
This is fantastic, not the kind of stuff you see people do themselves very often. How much did the concrete part of the build set you back if you don't mind sharing? The excavation alone I'd have thought would be much pricier than 3K.
The concrete and steel is the expensive part. Just what you saw so far was about 12000€.
THIS is all very informative, it looks super clean, well organized and perfectly executed. The construction site equipment also looks perfect and is very important. Congratulations
Thank you! I dont have a lot of physical energy due to long covid. So I plan ahead a lot.
I love this! Such a great job learning new stuff and doing it yourselves. Would love longer videos too 😊
Next there will probably be the video about my RC lawnmower that I built over the winter.
awesome stuff! i love the nice quick build videos/updates
Great progress! I'm looking forward to the next part, thank you for sharing 👍🏽
Thanks for watching!
Cool Video! Really nice to see how stuff like this gets put together.
🎉 fantastic to see a new video. looked up your channel two weeks ago and then again to see if you were active and ohh boy!
I'm so looking forward to seeing the next part. ❤ And I really do hope you set a good example for makers and property owners with plants and insect life 🌸🪻🐝🪲
Hope everything turns out great! Lots of love from Denmark 💪🇩🇰🇩🇪
Thanks! I am glad you enjoy the videos!
I will definitely create a nice garden outside. Since we have sandy soil there is a new opportunity to grow things that wouldn’t work in my garden at home. We will probably plant wildflowers and grass. I heard some water feature would also help.
Loving this! Also watching concrete flwoing is like visual ASMR -- so satisfying.
So cool, thank you for sharing.
Thanks you for watching!
What a fantastic series this is turning into! It's very cool that you hired friends to operate the machines and gave them the chance to learn on the job. I work in an office, but I've always wanted to run construction equipment!
I am grateful for their help! But they also get payed. Why not ask a builder if you can lend a hand? Might be a nice way to get experience. I would love to drive a harvester some day.
I look forward to the project. I am excited to see the transition from the insulated slab to the exterior siding.
Yeah me too. The sandwhich panels will sit right on top of the purple Jackodur. So its one continuous layer of insulation but there is some steel flashing between them and that flashing should get some compressible foam gasket. Anyway you will see that soon! The Workshop will be erected starting on the 21st of May.
@@MaxMakerChannelThanks for the information. I had written out several things before I come up with what I wrote. I am super glad that you were thinking of what I was thinking. I can not wait to see the upcoming videos!
@@kameljoe21 Thanks for watching! I do this for my audience after all!
Very nice, I'm excited to see what you come up with for interior lighting
So far I thought I would add those hanging LED lights that look like UFOs. A sponsor would be great for that. Being able to dimm them would also be nice. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
@@MaxMakerChannel yeah I have suggestions put in a few hundred meters of WS2812B addressable LED strips and code some animations for when parts are finished etc.
@@aleksjenner677 haha. That would be cool, but I think a maintenance nightmare.
@@aleksjenner677 Ooooohh the possibilities! Celebrate holidays (Christmas? Green & red all the way!), birthdays, Oktoberfest, or even have dace parties with music, especially Sythwave or Vaporwave. Collaborate with Anders Enger Jensen!
It is easy to see your engineering background. Everything is so exact and methodical.
How/where did you get the new container from for on site storage and what was the price??
I live close to Hamburg which is a huge container harbour. So there are a lot of suppliers. It was €3000 including delivery. I saw rusty old ones on ebay for 900€.
I am so excited for this series! Would love to see a breakdown of costs if you would be willing to share it.
Sure! It looks like this: 200k for the property, 120k for the foundation, 30k for the heat pump and radial heating, 250k for the steel building, 30k for interior framing, 20k for electrics, 20k for machinery, 30k for toilets, showers and kitchen. That is 700k € in total.
This video series is going to be a gem. Thanks for sharing your work!
I hope people actually watch it!
@@MaxMakerChannel I certainly will be :)
@XxMicroNinjaxX thanks!
Wow, that is much straighter @ ~4:50! Doing things on this scale would make me a bit nervous (even watching this does).
Wheelchair ramp was a clever idea. Concrete shots around 11:00 are pretty great. Hope to see it in person someday! -JC
I was a bit nervous to lose our reference. That would have been messy. Feel free to visit!
this is an awesome project to watch through. Loving this series so far!
That is nice!
Great progress! And nice container!
Nice camera angles, also nice to see the respect of people’s privacy! I believe this is Germany? Love the new building visualizations & construction! Thank you
Yes its in Germany. Germans don’t like to be filmed.
GREAT UPDATE VIDEOMAX, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE
The floating function on the loader basically rests the bucket on the ground without the loader applying any extra downward force. This allows the bucket to “float” over undulations in the land as you move along.
Thanks! Thats a great explanation!
For cabling prep - rather prep some 50mm or 110mm conduit sections.
They can be sealed later thus airtight - but allows you to bury/hide cabling which is nicer.
Have a look at some of the other YT'ers that do construction to see how they do it.
But just gives a bunch of space at a low level for cable and piping so you exit below grade.
I did that! We have 4 110mm sewage pipes that go through the foundation and exit 80cm below the ground. We can use them for outdoor lights and sockets or water pipes.
You were allowed to excavate on a Sunday!!! A neighbour of mine got fined for putting a single empty wine bottle into the local recycling!
Haha. Its a industrial estate. So in practice you can make noise 24/7. There are some limits but they are worded in such a technical way that even I cannot tell how loud is too loud. The sound engineer calculated my expected noise emissions and determined I would be far below any thresholds.
very cool!
If you ever do something like this again, get the biggest machines that will still fit on site and not kill you with shipping charges. The loader and the excavator are way to small for what you are doing, especially with this easy to access open site.
I agree. I told the rental company what I wanted to do and they recommended this size saying its two numbers up from a mini excavator. However it felt exactly like a mini excavator. The shipping cost for the excavator alone was 500€! I could drive the loader on site myself.
The second excavator was even smaller but below 2tons. That way you can tow it yourself and save those 500€.
Anyway the smaller tools were better for learning I guess.
What is the purpose of the flower wheels on the steel inside the concrete?
They ensure the steel is encapsulated with concrete by at least 3cm. If the steel is to close to the forms it rusts.
@@MaxMakerChannelThanks, first time seeing those.
damn i love blogs from the building site
Hello, your project is going really well. By the way, I've put the video on youtube showing the side shelves I fitted to my festool tool box
Fair play doing the ground work yourselves! Really enjoying this series :) One thing I am curious about is the "cleanliness" layer going straight onto the sand, ive never seen that done before! I was expecting some sort of rough gravel (here in Ireland: hard-core, in the uk MOT roadbase) to be put onto the sand and compacted before the concrete is poured. Is there similar stuff in Germany or is pouring the "cleanliness layer" the new way to go? 🤔
Ah yeah, I was expecting the same! We call that a load bearing layer out of crushed and compacted rock. We did that in the driveway video last year.
That is done to replace the top soil with something that doesn’t get muddy. A engineer told me that the sand acts a bit like a fluid and is incompressible. So It won’t change shape if it gets wet or dries up. Thats why we could just use the sand as a load bearing layer.
Great video! Can't wait for more videos!
Thanks for watching!
Perfect job!!!!
Thank you!
Looking forward to this series 😀
3:47 tying a thin rope or thread from pillar to another would have helped in getting a straight line for digging.
Awesome stuff!
Glad you like it!
Really interesting project.
By "new crew" do you mean people who will later work for you in the new workshop?
They already work for me. But only part time. With new crew I mean new in excavation.
@@MaxMakerChannel did you get to know some of your new neighbours already that will accompany you? Or are the other properties even sold?
@hans8902 Yes I know two tradesman and a roofer. I gave them some tips for the building permit. I am sure they are all sold. Or at least reserved.
Richtig cool dass ihr es selbst macht❤
Macht viel Spaß! Für den Innenausbau suche ich übrigens noch weitere Helfer als Minijob. Aktuell sind wir zu viert.
Great video, but one problem, I need more asap!
Love the project! Would you mind sharing how the shipping container cost?
I live close to Hamburg which is a huge container harbour. So there are a lot of suppliers. It was €3000 including delivery. I saw rusty old ones on ebay for 900€.
20foot is a standard size. The 10foot ones cost more, because they are not common.
how did you manage to beat it? Was it simply by getting it all checked out before sending it in, or was your planning schematic just less dense with detail / has less detail and was a smaller building then the rest ? What made your permit so much faster?
I managed it myself. I think others let there architect do all the paperwork. I only let my architect do those things that only he could do. After handing in the paperwork I also checked in with them every week and when they required paperwork I completed that on the same day.
What is your plan for the solar system set up? I have 10 years experience in commercial and residential Solar and battery systems if you are still looking for input :)
I looked at the economics. If I make the roof 100% solar it would only be worth it if I can sell the electricity directly through public EV chargers. Because selling the power to the government only pays peanuts. It would be wiser to invest that money in stocks. But 100% solar would probably be enough to supply the heat pump in the winter. In summer we would only use 5% of the yield ourselves.
I am still waiting for the prices to come down a bit. I don´t have a supplier yet.
@@MaxMakerChannel I would heavily recommend you spend your money on the inverter, I recommend Fronius and since you are in Germany I assume you will want that to haha.
As for panels I wouldn't worry as much as they are all pretty similar and even the cheaper ones have good warranty and for the extra money for a high end panel like a Qcell or Sunpower is not worth it you would be better off in my opinion spending the money and getting more panels I recommend Jinko they are chinese and cheap but I have 15Kw of them on my house and have installed megawatts of them in my career.
Also I would favour a sting inverter "The fronius Symo" Over Micro inverters people sing their praises, they are very cool tech but I spent countless days replacing dead micro inverters and the customer support for both Solar Edge and Enphase is abysmal.
Micro inverter death MAY be due to the heat in my area as I install in Australia but still, just had to many issues. Plus if you dont have trees or shading issues its not worth it.
If you have a few small shading issues like HVAC on the roof for example you are better off getting some Panel optimisers for just those panels.
Also I don't recommend solar storage at this stage unless your local government is giving rebates as they are so expensive and they chemical life of the battery is normally shorter than the time required for the investment to pay itself off.
I wish I could see how they plugged the forms, I guess they can just slide a blank of wood or something in the way?
They used plywood and nails : )

Hey Max, where did you buy the shipping container from? :)
From Globaltainer in Hamburg.
very inspiring! what's your total budget on this project?
About 800,000€.
@@MaxMakerChannel Thanks so much for sharing! It's very helpful getting an idea of what something like this costs. Its a dream to build a industrial shop like this. Good luck!
@ned_mograph5957 Its uncommon to talk about prices in Germany but anyone can estimate it anyway.
Awesome video!
Could you give some context around what you choose to blur out? I see you blur out your teams faces, which is fine if they don't want to be on video, but why did you blur the name on the side of the excavator that was working near your house? Surely they don't have an expectation of privacy for something like the company name, even in a very privacy conscious country like yours?
To understand that you have to know that the Germans are very big on data protection. So if I asked my crew they probably wouldn’t mind, but I bet they wouldn’t be keen.
The excavator had a giant advertisement on it and that was a bit distracting. Anyway unlike in the US because stuff is public doesn’t mean you can film it here. Everyone here is a bit sensitive. So I try my best not to step on any toes.
@@MaxMakerChannel Thanks for the information!
It must be a ton of work in editing. It's funny you say about being distracting - I find the blurring more distracting as it jumps out so much and then makes me wonder what and why it's blurred lol
@@robdavy4468 Yeah, I wish I could have just made the excavtor orange, but my editing software is not that great. Adding blurs is quite easy. You just have to skip ahead a few frames and reposition it when the person moves. Once the workshop is up Ill get a new mac for that. My current one is 8 years old and quite slow nowadays.
Any ideas what the metal "wheels" at 11:02 are used for? Guessing extra binding between the cement & reinforcement
They are plastic spacers to keep the rebar inside the concrete. Encased rebar doesn’t corrode.
@@MaxMakerChannel Thanks for replying!
What are those circular things on the side of the structures about 11:12 into the video?
They are spacers to keep the rebar away from the surface of the concrete.
How much the container costed?! How much they charge you for the equipment rental?! Could I visit you there and see the construction?! Just for a few hours 😅 thanks so much 🎉 I wanna help you in the construction work for free 😊 im serious ❤
Hey! Everyone gets payed! At the moment I have 4 students working for me and I am looking for two more. They should be located in Lübeck. There is also a „full time“ job available. 3days a week at 19€/h.
The container was 3000€ with shipping.
3:24 Schwimmstellung
what are those silver circular things on the rebar? 11:00
They ensure minimum spacing between the rebar and the forms.
No license required to use digger and other big machines?
No
4:33 I hope you meant petrol lol
This machine has 5 stickers on it!
