Ramble On is one you’ll love. What Is and What Will Never Be is another. And, you must hear their song Rock and Roll. Polo, I know you’ll love those three.
Great song. The female singing with Robert is Sandy Denny, the only time LZ included another singer for this beautiful folk song and it worked perfectly. ❤
Whole LOTR love ❤
One of my favourites by them just for that.
My favourite thing about Led Zeppelin is their love for Lord of the Rings.
Led Zeppelin for me is "Anthem Rock".. really good, but same with Queen, i just don't get THAT level of hype AT ALL.
@@gingerbaker_toad696I see Led Zepp as more than anthem rock because they have anthems like The Immigrant Song and Heartbreaker but they also pull of softer songs like this.
That's actually singer Sandy Denny from the band Fairport Convention singing with Robert Plant.
This is the only LZ song that features a guest vocalist. Heart (LZ's 'official' cover band) also did this song...and killed it
Ah... Fairport Convention. Meet on the Ledge. 🙂
Rick Beato is from Fairport, NY… as was Phillip Seymore Hoffman 😢
She was also very pregnant when this was recorded.
Love that pal, facts are fantastic
Sandy Denny's voice blends with Plants so well.
Led Zeppelin isn't music, it's a way of life..
This whole album is a just push play and walk away.A brilliant album.
“The ground is rich from tender care. Repay, do no forget “
How relevant this line is today.
how forgotten it is in the UK today. the members of this band must weep to see their country now.
" The drums will shake the castle walls, the Ringwraiths ride in black"
Lord of the Rings was a Huge Influence on Zepplin. mentioned in (4) other tunes, including Misty Mountain Hop...!
“The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath”. I love that line.
Best lyric of the whole song,IMHO!
Wish our politicians would heed that advice.
yeah, thats a great line....the band is legend for a reason, never be another Zeppelin
**Beautiful**
@@raymo6795 Utterly agree!
Led Zeppelin’s most underrated song.
My favorite band all through high school and well into my 50's! I love Led Zeppelin!
This is a lyrics focused song. Tells an amazing story. That's why they chose no drums to pull you away from the words.
Now imagine listening to this 50, 100+ times and more over the course of decades. It gets better.
The late Sandy Denny was the perfect voice to sing with Robert Plant. The song has never been bettered with other female singers.
You can tell the band were big fans of The LOTR trilogy when you listen to songs like this one.
One of my all time favorite songs and my second favorite zeppelin song kashmir being number one
The Lord of The Rings isn't a trilogy. It is one novel. The publisher just split it into 3 books for marketing reasons.
@@mklives2 Nobody asked for your opinion, and this is why you are so lonely.
@@gregharker1600 It's not an opinion. It's an easily checkable fact. Tolkien wrote it as a single work, and sent it to the publisher in 1949/1950. The publisher refused to publish it as a single volume due to the cost or publishing such a large book, and its modest anticipated sales.
@@mklives2 I do not care, get a damn life.
You definitely have to try “Over the Hills & Far Away”!!!!!!!
This song kicks ass because of the Lord of the rings type lyrics and Celtic elements! They fuse it together so well, they will never be matched
Never!!! indeed!
Great song. Heart did an excellent live version of this song as well.
I think Heart's version surpasses.
Once they had JPJ sing with Plant...very odd to see!
Agree@@alysmyers8772
Led Zeppelin’s catalog is deep. You can find anything you want to find as far as rock and roll guitar instruments goes. They do, Celtic, Blue grass, Folk, Psychedelic, middle eastern.. all types of world music and still hold onto their dna in their music.
Hey Polo ~ That was the incomparable Sandy Denny singing the high parts. One of the greatest female rock singers to have ever lived. This is my all time, number one favorite song from Zeppelin. It is spectacular, glorious and mesmerizing. I'm so glad that you love it too.
All true. But wasn’t she a great FOLK singer? Not rock, surely.
@@helenespaulding7562 Mainly 'folk' I suppose, but Fairport Convention was considered 'folk rock' -- of course, all such labels are treacherous and slippery . . . :-)
Now you know why everyone loves Led Zeppelin even people that don't really like Led Zeppelin still Love damn they just don't want to admit it my all-time favorite band since I was 13 and I'm 60 this month thank you for playing that get the Led out thanks Polo❤
@@roberta7727 you might wish to copy and paste your comment to the main thread…..not this side thread with just three of us on it. 😁
**Beautiful** they always **Mesmerize* me
There’s No bad Zeppelin All are awesome 😎
I believe you'll find that was John Paul Jones on the mandolin... John was a master musician with the ability to play so many parts.
Zeppelin is often more than music...its a portal to a mythical realm.
Heart has a live cover of this from their Alive in Seattle set. Ann plays guitar and sings Robert’s part while Nancy plays mandolin and sings the harmony. Most people don’t realize that Nancy can sing as well as Ann can. She just has a thinner voice. It’s maybe the best cover of any song I’ve ever heard. They even nail the ending with the overlapping vocal delays. It’s absolutely incredible
2nd best cover ever. The Wilson sisters' cover of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors was the best cover of any song, ever.
@@cjzitoI actually have to disagree. Don’t get me wrong. That’s a magnificent cover, but I think the one I commented is better still. It demonstrates their fantastic musicianship and not only is Nancy’s singing as spectacular as Ann’s, the harmonies are unbelievable.
Saw them at the Gorge do this acousticly and it gave you the shivers it was that amazing!!! 1995or96
Sandy Denny is the only person to be a guest singer on a Led Zeppelin track. Love this song!
You should do "Ten Years Gone" by Zeppelin. Such a wonderful song
I agree! Ten Years Gone is epic!
Beautiful! & i concur
One of my personal Top 5 LZ tunes, right there.
He should just listen to the entirety of Physical Graffiti. It really is Zeppelin's opus.
@joeyhuebner10 yes, it truly is!
I like every Led Zeppelin song I've ever heard. Out of all those there are several I love. This piece feels like it is from a far away time. I love it.
indeed so mystically magically beautiful
Love this song, reminds you of how great Zeppelin’s writing and creativeness was! Love thee lyrics!! There are no bad Zeppelin songs! Everyone is different! So glad I grew up listening to it! It helped form my life!!❤️RIP John Bonham!
You are getting closer to "You Shook Me" from Led Zeppelin. Enjoy the ride.
The sole duet in Zeppelin's discography
Mandolin Wind and Gasoline Alley are both great mandolin songs by Rod Stewart. If you like that sort of thing....they are both brilliant.
I'm of the camp who believes that Rod stole most of Mandolin Wind from Ronnie Lane.
@@selina9091 Not sure about that, but the song and Rod's vocals are fantastic.
How is it even possible to take a guy as gifted as John Bonham out of the equation and still create a musical masterpiece...
Because they put in Page, Plant, Jones and Denny.
{:o:O:}
@@ansfridaeyowulfsdottir8095 He was probably tired.
Very good point
One of the things I like best about Led Zeppelin is that you can listen to a song 100 times and every time you do you hear something in it you hadn’t heard before.
YES, YES, YES finally some Sandy Denny! Try Fairport Convention "Who knows where the time goes". Also any Richard Thompson, 50 some years of great work.
I prefer Judy Collins version with Denny a close second.
Genres were playthings and the universe of music was open for exploration.
Great reaction again, POLO! The cover version of this song by Heart is absolutely killer and showcases sides of both Wilson sisters you rarely get to see on any other songs they put out!
What makes this song especially potent IMO is its sequencing within side one of 'Led Zeppelin IV' ~ it's the transition between "Rock And Roll" and "Stairway To Heaven".
Robert Plant sings this with Sandy Denny, so you will hear her voice in this as well, they are doing a duette. She was an English vocalist (they are all English) and they invited her to do the track with them. John Bonham sat this one out, he probably needed a break anyway. They were really into JRR Tolkien back before Tolkien was popular. It just shows how they just loved to experiment, they always wanted to push the boundaries and try new things. Wait till you hear D’yer Mak’er, you'll be like; Is this Led Zeppelin ? There is a lot more Zeppelin ahead. Ramble On, In the Light, South bound Sauez, D’yer Mak’er just to name a few. Rock on !
The magic of Led Zeppelin is that they created a genera of music previously un created, a genera so original and so captivating that it LED to them becoming what they became.
These guys were everything and still are they molded and they shaped a lot of us in my generation and taught us a lot of things and showed us a lot of beautiful things and a lot of ugly things that were in the world, it was a wonderful time to be alive and I love seeing people younger generations looking at this and getting something from it, but nothing will ever surpass being in the time and the moment when these songs first came out, but still watching you all, listen to them for the first time is a wonderful nostalgic feeling in my soul. Yeah, I love. Led Zeppelin, by the way.
Always loved this song. Beautiful
Excellent reaction! Truly one of the greatest bands ever!
It says something about Plant’s amazing vocals that people can mistaken Sandy Denny’s beautiful harmonies for his own. It is the only Zeppelin song with a guest vocalist.
Start at Led Zeppelin 1 and just run straight thru their whole catalog...you'll be happy you did...
I've got my number of favorite Zep songs down to 9 albums ...
I love the tightrope metaphor, and as a long time listener to led zeppelin it brings me a lot of joy to see you appreciate them. You have to check out “going to California” it’s similar to this where it’s very mellow but it’s beautiful and one of the best.
It's not the only Zep song to reference The Lord of the Rings. Check out "Ramble On" if you haven't already.
Greatest Band Ever!!
I love this siong so much! I played mandolin in highschool in the 90's and the music of Led Zeppelin and R.E.M. are what inspired me, not bluegrass. If you havent heard "Going to California" from this same album (Led Zeppelin IV), please check it out, it also features the mandolin and is nothing short of beautiful.
Led Zeppelin IV just smash play and react ❤
Thats actually sandy denny singing with Robert
_The pain of war cannot exceed the woe of aftermath_
_The drums will shake the castle wall, the ring wraiths ride in black_
_Ride on!_
_(Sing as you raise your bow, shoot straighter than before)_
_No comfort has the fire at night that lights the face so cold_
_(Oh dance in the dark of night, sing to the morning light)_
_The magic runes are writ in gold, to bring the balance back_
_Bring it back!_
_At last the sun is shining, the clouds of blue roll by_
_With flames from the dragon of darkness, the sunlight blinds his eyes..._
{:o:O:}
A masterpiece.
7Hi Polo ! Strange i am nearly 70 but i have loved this song since i was 17 ! glad you appreciate the beauty of a lovely English folk song !
Zeppelin are so diversed....And, so good in all diversities
I too love a good cigar when listening to music. I get it.
👍👍Great. 🖖❤
Polo I owe you a thanks. I've heard of Tool and maybe heard some of their music in passing but never really listened to them. Led Zeppelin has always been one of my top 3-4 favorite bands. When you went all in for Led Zeppelin and then basically said Tool is your favorite I was like I gotta check out Tool. I've been absolutely loving them the last couple of days. So thanks.
Love your stuff man. Keep it up!
"...they haven't disappointed me yet.." Well, Mr Mars, it aint happening with this one!✌🏼
Sandy Denny was the female vocalist.
You should listen to "Thats the way" on Led Zeppelin 3, another beautiful song that can just bliss you out.
Zeppelin III is so different from their other records, and in the best way possible.
john paul jones played the mandolin. page played acoustic guitar
That was on Going to California. I read Jimmy played mandolin on this.
Page played mandolin on this.
Jones played it on Going to Cali and it was his own mandolin that Page picked up and picked out 'Battle', pretty much on the spot.
He had never played one up to that point.
This was so in the studio and with both songs when played live. Page played mandolin on this during the 1977 live versions of Battle Of Evermore.
Jones a did play the mandolin on all live versions of 'Going To California'.
@@MJEvermore853 that was how I thought I remembered learning it. But seeing so many comments on here stating JPJ not Page played mandolin on this track had me start doubting my memory. Thanks for straightening it out and validating I can still rely on my memory😂
@@bradsense7431....you're welcome. Trust your own memory! 😉
Yeah there are a lot of incorrect comments on here, I've noticed. It's a LZ factoid that's really easy to look up but people don't seem to want to do that.
Oh definitely one of my top 10 Zeppelin songs. Maybe top 5
Wow i am loving how much you are loving them & so deservedly so man i have been listening to them since i was a lil kid & to this day i have never heard anything like them & and never will i don't think there is just something so unexplainable in the power or hold however you want to say it that they have over so very many who listen to them & those many whew watch out ha Led Zeppelin fans are the most loyal protective on & on fans ever i know i am anyway heh but i am also including ALL the other reactors i have watched fall madly in like/luv with them & they all end up die hard fans & think they are the best band to them it is magical truly k babbin too much now btw i am loving the cigar! & i truly hope ya will never run into one that ya dont like! but hopefully we shall all be able to see oh it is very exciting to watch new people and new generations appreciating what i consider to be real raw beautiful on & on music & cuz watching you makes it feel like the first time for me all over again & well it is just priceless so Thank You! Whoa i luv your saying "Phoenix Mode" i luv that too Jimmy Page does A LOT of that he is magical & genius to me k done swear
Still takes my breath away 🎼🦋🦋🦋✨
Polo! Thanks for the review...just a fantastic tune featuring acoustic instruments only. I was # 100 on the 'thumbs up'! BTW...LBJ = GOAT!! East side of Cleveland rocks!!
SUCH a BEAUTIFUL SONG!! MASTERPIECE!!! So glad you gave this one a listen!! Hard to find a song by this band that isn't just STELLAR!! HUGS, POLO!!
“Phoenix Mode” - perfect way to describe it. Layne in Love Hate Love immediately came to mind when you said that.
If you want another awesome Led Zeppelin album. Check out "Unledded" a mostly live album. Other singles are" Thank you ,Whole Lotta love,Moby dick,Bonzos Montreux, and Since I have been loving you. "
I never get tired of this song, ever
It’s elfin magic. These four aren’t human, they’re of the elfin kind.
Oh thank you 👌👊💜
This is my favorite Zeppelin song!
My absolute favorite song from Led Zeppelin. Great reaction, love your work.
Sandy Denny was given her own symbol.
Its a great feeling that you appreciate this music
Heart did a killer live version of this on the Singles soundtrack.
John Paul Jones is the hidden gem of Led Zeppelin. For me Dream Theater is my go to band, love all their music.
Love your reactions so much. Another band that includes the mandolin that you might like is Seals & Crofts. Beautiful harmonies.
Summer breeze makes me feel fine….. 1976 summer… sunshine with light wind in my hair… lightning bugs at night with soft summer night breezes caressing my face. …. Memories
Sandy Denny, one of UK's best singers period. 3.10 to Yuma. Who Knows Where the Time Goes. She kills you.
In The Light is a great tune by them
Seeing this live, was mind blowing !
This is the only song Led Zeppelin ever recorded with a guest vocalist. Sandy Denny also got to add her own rune/ symbol to the album.
I grew up through the 1980s and 90s listening to Led Zep thanks to my older brothers and have always loved this song but didn't realise until the early 2000s that it wasn't Plant singing the falsetto parts and it was actually Sandy Denny, their voices are so well matched. You should check her music out too, a wonderful talent, try the track "Banks of the Nile" with her band Fotheringay.
Much love and respect for you Polo from Austin, Texas ( Atx)!
Agreed. ;)
Some of Zeppelin's music takes a couple of listens to appreciate and enjoy, but as a whole, there's not a bad song amongst them. And some aren't on albums.
Traveling Riverside Blues is one of those, and is one of my favorites. It's a cover of a Robert Johnson song that was recorded in 1969 but wasn't released until 1990 on their box set.
If you like Blues and Zeppelin, this is your song.
Yep, that song is awesome. Didn’t know about it until the boxed set.
it is exciting to listen to your experiences with LZ and how you catch and phrase the divine resonances LZ has transmitted from our all source
Plant is like a Nordic God. 😂 That's how I see him. I love the mystical, medieval, chanting, harmonizing style of so many of their songs .... and some all about BATTLES. I mean, sometimes battles are neccessary. The sky is filled w/good and bad. You can just picture the knights readying for battle. And then in battle...and then the aftermath. Yes, elements of FOLK! The word I was also tryna think of. 👍
Keep going brother!❤Zep is just perfect to me.....
This is actually a duet with Sandy Denny. She matches his tone perfectly
Whole lotta love the louder the better for me
I like your editing/reaction style on this one. I prefer when an artist listens all the way through otherwise they miss the build of some songs. I also like getting feedback throughout like the “pausing reactors” do. This is a good combination of both.
the universe has conspired to make it rain and bring the incomparable Sandy Denny to mind, apparently. Guess i'm listening to Sandy Denny all morning. The Battle of Evermore is such a vibe.
Heart did an amazing job of Battle of Evermore. I’d recommend it for a reaction.
Still gives me chills after hearing it hundreds of times in my life. My all time fav Led Zeppe song!
Polo you must watch/listen to the live version of this tune performed by Page & Plant in the early 90s - the album was called No Quarter by Unledded. It's an out of this world experience.
This is the first and last time Led Zeppelin added an outside vocalist. This song is strongly influenced by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I know you have reacted to Hearts tribute to Stairway to Haven, well if you look at videos from The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you will find the Willson sisters doing this song and bring down the house.
If you like their folk style music. Check out some songs off LED Zeppelin 3. Gallows Pole, Bron Yr Arr Stomp, That’s the Way and Tangerine are all gems
My first reaction, although I'm almost 72 y.o. = Very unique. We'll never look at a mandolin the same! 😀
I like the way you’ve cut this together. Listening through and adding in the commentary as cut scenes is an awesome approach. I love that it allows you to hear it all at once. This is the best format I’ve seen yet for this type of video
