The only Led Zeppelin song in which Robert Plant had a co-singer. The late, great Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. She also had a large collection of solo material away from Fairport Convention. Check her out. Fabulous stuff.
This song hits hard.... Sandy's vocals and vocalizations, coupled with Robert's voice and the sound of the mandolin forge an absolutely beautiful and HAUNTING piece of music.
@@Cosmo-Kramer No, it's not. Ian "Stu" Stewart, pianist who played with the Rolling Stones, appears as a special guest on "Rock and Roll" (Led Zeppelin IV) and "Boogie with Stu" (Physical Graffiti).
For this song, Jimmy plays mandolin (his first time with that instrument) while John Paul Jones plays acoustic guitar. Jimmy doubled his mandolin tracks and used an echo machine to help provide a wall of mandolin/guitar for this song. As others have said, singer Sandy Denny joined Robert on this. Sandy provides the "ground level" commentary while Robert seems to provide the "big picture" overview of some fantasy battle. When performed live, Jimmy would play the mandolin while John Paul Jones played a three-neck guitar with a mandolin on top, a 12-string guitar in the middle, and a 6-string guitar on the bottom. Jonesy would also sing Sandy's part in concert. Robert has always been interested in Lord Of The Rings, histories, various mythologies and folklores, especially Celtic/Welsh so, in addition to lyrics inspired by Lord Of The Rings (Ringwraiths), Scottish histories of Anglo-Scottish wars of the fifteenth and sixteenth certuries, he also mentions "Avalon" which comes from King Arthur legends. Avalon was supposed to be the source of all magick and comes from the Celtic word "abal" which means apple. Avalon was said to be a beautiful paradise island full of wild apple trees (the lyric "the apples of the valley hold the seeds of happiness"), grapevines, and wheat. I really appreciate your enthusiasm for Zep's music! i *strongly* suggest you start at the beginning of their catalogue and go in album/track order; it is nothing short of incredible.
One of the coolest things is that there is still so much of the Zeppelin catalog you have not heard yet....and the diversity of the catalog will continually astound you. Cool reaction....ty!
I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and a huge Tolkien fan, so this song has always been a favorite of mine. Plant loved Tolkien and had used him as inspiration for lyrics in several Zeppelin songs. Great choice since this is not a well-known one of theirs to non-fans.
This song is a duet by Robert Plant + Sandy Denny (singer from Fairport Convention at the time, as a special guest) which is part of Led Zeppelin's fourth album. Led Zeppelin's first 4 albums are masterpieces where Robert Plant is at the peak of his voice. In this song, guitarist Jimmy Page's work in the studio is brilliant, in the final section of the song he plays 6 instruments separately and mixes them together to result in this wonder for our ears. Sandy Denny, a masterful singer, died young, at just 31 years old, after falling into a coma following an accident in 1978 after falling down a staircase. She already suffered from depression and alcoholism and this was the last and final one in a series of accidents that she had in the final stages of her life. A great song to get to know Fairport Convention that showcases Sandy and the band's talent is "A sailor's life", a masterpiece folk rock jam suite with 11 minutes, from the album "Unhalfbricking". R.I.P., Sandy 🙏❤
A MUST SEE/HEAR beautiful song by these incredibly talented & very unique performers,, Steam Powered Giraffe🦒 "Honeybee" (Official Music Video A MUST!!) 🔥❤️
My all time favorite song. Sandy Denny was a wonderful person and a great singer on her own. Then you pair her with Robert Plant, and you have a Masterpiece.
No words can describe the magic of Led Zeppelin. This is the great Sandy Denny singing with Robert. She is the only other person aside from the 4 band members who was honored with her own glyph. You might want to check out some of her music, like the hauntingly beautiful "Who Knows Where The Time Goes". Im about to turn 68 and I often wonder the same thing. I was a mere 15 when this Zep album was released
I have been recommending this song performed live by the band Heart for years. The show was called “Heart - Alive in Seattle”. Anne plays acoustic guitar and sings Robert Plant’s part. Nancy plays the Mandolin and sings Sandy Denny’s part. It’s one of the best live covers I have ever seen. I’m subscribing in the hopes you check it out now that you’ve heard the original.
O man! It's been a long time since I listened to this song. Instantally, I was teleported through time and space to my childhood-teenage room, Led Zeppelin on the stereo, while ensconced in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Both were very popular around here back in the 70s. That my favourite band so obviously also loved my then favourite author was very cool. Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane.
Se reunieron: el mejor guitarrista de la década del 70, el mejor cantante, el mejor baterista y el mejor bajista, tecladista, etc de esa década!! Por ello, la mejor banda de Rock de todos los tiempos!!
As said the amazing Sandy Denny, Robert is still friends with the members of Fairport Convention and has turned up many times to perform at their Annual Festival in the small Oxfordshire village of Cropredy
Just about any rock song that adds in a Mandolin & I'm instantly hooked,, Such a unique & beautiful sound..Used by Groups like Jethro Tull,, R.E.M. & Of Course Led Zeppelin.
Well guys welcome to the 70's, this is what our music was all about, just one grouse ( aussie for just absolutely the best) song after the other we were so so lucky Peter
Exactly.....no experiences, either their own...or of others, in the form of books, either fact, or fiction created through imagination drawing from those experiences. 😢.
Now I would suggest going to something at the opposite end of their wide range; When The Levee Breaks. Outstanding, hypnotic, powerful blues rock. The range between this song and Levee is immense. If you want live, but also showing their range, then I would suggest Since I’ve Been Loving You, live from MSG ‘73. Gorgeous blues….and damn sexy too. 😁😘
Led Zeppelin is a band that can only be understood...in the studio I've seen them live twice and "it was a great party" is the best that can be said. It seemed Robert and Jimmy didn't know any of the songs. In studio, they were genius. You really have to hear "Since I Been Lovin You"
I've been enjoying this song since it was released in 1971, and I think this is the first time I've seen the lyrics while it is being played! Great reaction from you, and you're right, each song of theirs just keeps getting better and better!
I've said it more than once before,, But i feel it necessary to say it again,, I ALWAYS truly enjoy your reactions & I thank you for ALL the time & effort you put in to your videos for our enjoyment/entertainment.❤
You have watched the Kennedy Honors video of Heart doing Stairway to Heaven, yes? Heart did allot of Zeppelin covers in concert……their fans loved it and Zeppelin fans loved it because they did them so well. One of their best covers was of this song. You can imagine Ann Wilson singing Roberts part.
To listen to this song with you, through your ears, is almost like hearing it for the first time again! Thanks for your reactions; very enjoyable rediscovering the music of my youth with you two.
Sandy Denny features on this song, one of Englands finest singers. You should check her out with her band Fairport Convention, beautiful English folk music
I so enjoy your reactions ! The joy on your face discovering the magic of the music of my life brings a smile to my face every time i watch the 2 of you. So joyful!!!
Greatest band of all time. Arguably the deepest, most consistent, and most diverse catalog of any band, in any era, any genre. Loving your trip down the rabbit hole
I finally learned how to play the mandolin part of this song after decades of admiring it. I've never felt my guitar skill was up to the perceived task. As it turns out, it wasn't as hard as I've always thought. But, it did renew in me just recently, a love for the song. I'm glad others are getting a taste of the old magic. Led Zeppelin are the Norse gods of rock & roll.
My gosh!!!!! I haven't heard this song in ages. It's almost as if I'm hearing for the first time again, like you are, and with lyrics! You two are great! Love your channel and your song selections! ✌🏻
Sandy Denny was the English Janis Joplin to a degree. She is the only guest singer on any Zep track. She battled alcoholism and one day fell down a flight of stairs and passed away very young.
Love ❤you both..your zeppelin reactions are awesome....you must do in my time of dying....but there are so many more so....just do the lot...love and peace to you both...and Arnold of course xxx
- I got great joy watching both your faces fill with joy when you realized, "This song is amazing! How does Zeppelin do it? Every time; and every time different!" :)
Robert Plant was a big fan of Tolkien and had a love of the Middle Ages and stories of trolls and fairies. Stairway to Heaven, which is on the same album, also has similar backgrounds. Plant says today that he could no longer write such abstract texts as he did when he was younger. One of the few Led Zeppelin pieces that doesn't feature a guitar. Page played it from start to finish on a mandolin.
Jimmy Page plays the mandolin on this song - he’d never played it before and just picked up John Paul Jones’ mandolin and started strumming and came up with the riff to this song. So much talent in one band. They were all the best in the world at what they did.
the story of this song is interesting... Jimmy never played a mandolin before and asked JPJ if he could try it ..they were at Headley Grange and the recording had equipment on most of the time and Jimmy figured the mandolin out and started playing that riff ..Robert joined in with lyrics right off the top of his head and then he thought they should have a guest singer
Nobody can ever be this good again.
The only Led Zeppelin song in which Robert Plant had a co-singer. The late, great Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention. She also had a large collection of solo material away from Fairport Convention. Check her out. Fabulous stuff.

Prof, jrr. Tolkien, Oxford University........,hippy bible.........Sandy...........feel whilst a little tipsy.......allegedly...........with Fairport convention..............now simply learn..........
Sorry.......fell!
To be clear, this is the only song in which a person outside the band guest performed.

I wish they would…..several of us have suggested this, but so far, they haven’t bitten. 😉😏
"The Battle of Evermore" is a folk duet sung by Robert Plant and Sandy Denny .
One of the coolest things is that there is still so much of the Zeppelin catalog you have not heard yet....and the diversity of the catalog will continually astound you. Cool reaction....ty!

I have heard this song a 1000 times, it’s still utterly magical.

Led Zeppelin’s most underrated song.
(It had the misfortune of being placed on the album right before Stairway to Heaven.)
When the album came out I was deep into the hard rock of LZ and didn't appreciate this song. I now think it's one of their finest moments.
I believe that Jimmy Page had picked up John Paul Jone’s mandolin for the first time and the seeds of this song were born.
Yep I'm sure that's right
A really great song. Led Zeppelin was so good.
Led Zeppelin is for the ADVANCED music listener,,,,GOAT's. 💥💥💥🤘😎
I've been listening for 45 years,,,,STILL get the Chills. 🤪
Best Zep song ever.
You can never go wrong with Zeppelin.....They are Masters of their Music Craft !
Man what pipes! Duet was AWESOME, love Jimmy`s guitar! Man that song is GREAT. LZ so many
ways to present their songs.
For a group known for its heavy guitar riffs and thunderous drumming they produced a masterpiece in English folk !
Simplemente lo más grande Zeppelin
One of my favourite Zep tracks. The other singer is Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention.
A MUST SEE/HEAR beautiful song by these incredibly talented & very unique performers,, Steam Powered Giraffe🦒 "Honeybee"

U 2 are beyond lovely
Sandy Denny is singing along with Robert. She was the lead singer of the Fairport Convention
Sandy Denny the only Woman to sing on a Led Zeppelin album.Rip girl.
This song live is out of this world.
no matter how soft or mellow these guys play, it will be the heaviest you ever heard
More fabulous Led Zeppelin!! Love it!! ❤
1st heard this song in 1983 and already fell in love.
The girl singing in the Battle of Evermore name is Sandy Denny who passed away in 1978

Yes….they did Zep SO WELL!
I just love the mandolin in this song....as I was listening I was imaging how that would sound on a hammer dulcimer..
Music is the key to bring World Peace!
Love you Guy's !!

Hi there, I Love LED Zeppelin too, I was at their last Concert in Berlin 1980, before John Bonham died 0:10
Sandy Denny had one of if not the most beautiful voices i have ever heard
they all are my favs lol
Plant and Page unleded live for MTV. A great version I think you guys would enjoy that entire concert.
One reason they don't write like this anymore is people largely stopped reading and getting taught the classics. There's a lack of depth.
Exactly.....no experiences, either their own...or of others, in the form of books, either fact, or fiction created through imagination drawing from those experiences. 😢.
Also they don’t get taught music much anymore in school or get exposed to instruments. That’s a huge part of it.
Zeppelin IV, took music to a different level.
There's one called... That's the Way ..Live 75'
It will blow your mind 🤯
Now I would suggest going to something at the opposite end of their wide range; When The Levee Breaks. Outstanding, hypnotic, powerful blues rock. The range between this song and Levee is immense.

The "sleeper" song from that album and is one of my favorites.
Led Zeppelin is a band that can only be understood...in the studio

It seemed Robert and Jimmy didn't know any of the songs. In studio, they were genius. You really have to hear "Since I Been Lovin You"
So many decades later and this song still gives me chills, still makes the hair on my head tingle.
Ann and Nancy Wilson of the band Heart have always been fans of Zeppelin. They performed this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame presentation.
And they did a magnificent job!!

this is the 1st time jimmy ever played mandoline, he picked it up and did this with it!
If you can get to this song called-No Quarter live version from Madison Square Garden 1973-i believe you will be impressed.
Welcome to led zeppelin we were only 15 or16 when we heard this and our reaction was the same as yours
I was 24…..but reaction was the same! LOVE this song!
Thanks for that. I think if they sang Happy birthday song it would be best version ever 😮🎉
Sandy Denny features on this song, one of Englands finest singers. You should check her out with her band Fairport Convention, beautiful English folk music
Whole LOTR love ❤
On this song, John Paul Jones played mandolin. There were two singers. Robert Plant and Sandy Denny (ex Fairport Convention and Fotheringay.)
One of my all time favorites....composition, harmonies and musical interaction coming together as one.

The Wilson sisters of Heart (Ann and Nancy) do a beautiful version of this song as well. Very much in keeping with the original.
Love your channel. Small, but mighty. ❤
Saw it live as a teenager, although I must have been thirty rows back. Outside in the hottest part of summer, but it was worth it.
Led Zeppelin "trampled under foot" next please ..John Paul Jones talent is insane on this track !!
I think they’ve done that……..

I fell asleep as a preteen, every night with headphones on a loop to this album on (8trak).
Heart has a good cover of this. In fact, it is my favorite of Heart's covers of Led Zeppelin songs.
People always shoot me a crazy look when I say this might be my favorite song but I can't help it :)
The best reaction I’ve ever heard guys.
Try zeppelins No Quarter and In The Light! Both do differand BRILLIANT!
Jimmy picks up JPJ"s mandolin late night at Headley Grange having never played one, and writes this.
Truth. And amazing.
"I was familiar with the tuning"@@tektoniks_architects
