    Got so nervous when saw the widow maker scissor jack. Yikes, glad you had it blocked after that, and mentioing it in the video, SOOO IMPORTANT. ALSO, CHALK THE TIRES! Neeeeever use a scissor jack unless in an emergency, at least dont go under with it in place, they are so dangerous. Lost a neighbor by a car falling on him, true story. I spend lots of time under my vehicles, but safety first as as you said. Be carefull all. Happy trails!

      They were the best money spent on curing poor handling. A stiffer front torsion bar helps too. I had a Ford high top camper which handled terribly until I put on the Bilsteins. I put them on my Winnebago too to correct soft, spungy ride, too much lean on corners, and being blown around in the wind

    Thank you for your great videos!! I know this is an older video but I assume people like me are still finding and watching these install videos. I originally installed the rear sumo springs when the van was empty and used both spacers. At that time it was barely touching and made a significant difference in the ride. After building out the van and adding significant weight the ride was extremely rough. I just removed one of the spacers and it made a tremendous difference in softening the ride

  • @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt
    @ARepublicIfYouCanKeepIt 5 лет назад +8

    "Minimum viable product" is all too often the mantra followed by many manufacturers. The difference is evident from the full contact that the rear Sumo's make once the suspension becomes loaded. The original bump stop is exactly that. It stops the axle from colliding with the frame. Otherwise, it travels, uncontrolled, through it's range of motion. The SumoSprings, on the other hand, damp the suspension compression throughout. So, with full contact, and helper springs, the van simply doesn't rock as severely. Nor does the rear end violently bounce.
    As for the fronts, I can only imagine how much tighter the whole ride and maneuvering experience must be with the modified spring rate that the front Sumo's provide.
    Lastly, it's crazy to think that the RV manufacturer blocked the jacking point!

    • @CareyOnVagabond
      @CareyOnVagabond  5 лет назад +2

      Thanks John. And yes, to block the jack access with no explanation of an alternative option!😳🤷‍♂️

    • @johnwren3976
      @johnwren3976 5 лет назад

      The original are BUMP STOPS. Only function is to keep suspension from hitting the frame/bottoming out. Been on everything since cars were invented.
      Sumo springs are designed to contact sooner to support weight. Its function is an additional spring.
      Only concern is, is the frame designed to take additional load at that point over time?

    When I was a kid I had a 66' Ford pickup and put wood blocks in the springs to give it a little lift. Do these devices basically do the same thing? I want to lift my Yukon up just a little so I don't drag the steps on rutted up back roads.

    Thanks for the video… I did this on my 2020 ProMaster today (forgot the lock-tight so I had to do it twice)😢 I have a question though. I saw another video where they pulled one of the pucks off. Have you had any issues since you installed these that would indicate they are too tight? He was afraid the taller unit would make it too stiff I guess. By the way, the newer front coil units no longer come with zip ties.

    Just a little curious here, since you started with a new van, did you order the van with limited slip rear axel? I see a fair number of videos on YT of people with these vans not being able to make it up steep hills during heavy downpours on paved roads or on some of the BLM lands getting stuck on rock roads. On occasion being pulled out by vehicles with a bit more weight and dually tires. Limited slip would have kept most of them from having a problem. Cost more but worth it.

    Dave and Irene, Nice job!
    Total Van Height, has the Sumo Springs increased to total van height, when measured from the ground to the top of the van body? My Promaster has 1.25 of clearance to fit into my garage, so I am very sensitive to additional height. My 2020 2500 159" Promaster (new with nothing in the back) is 101 5/8" tall. I am concerned these new Sumo Springs bumps stops will make my van too tall for my garage. Can you tell me what how much height the new bump stops would add, if any? I know your may be loaded so the comparison may not accurate, but I am just looking for an idea since I could find that detail on the Sumo Springs reseller's site. from what commenters have said it sounds like 1/4 to 1/2 inch, just curious if you know.
    I will wait on the front until I decided to put in better shocks.

    Oil those threads on you screw jack. I would also do the lug nuts on your wheels with an anti seize compound. They hammer those on with Air tools and you won't get them off when you have a flat roadside. Go to Harbor Freight and get a half inch ratcheting 18" breaker bar. Then a 21mm deep impact socket from Auto Zone. You won't regret it.

    I'm all in and with you on the new rears, but front spring assisters reduce the life of your springs. now that your all about to hit them keys telling me I'm an idiot, I'll explain, sit back.... if you hit a large hump or dip in the road, and it compresses your spring by 3inches, that's 3 inches spread over all the springs length, once you restrain 1/3 of the spring with an assister, now that 3inches of compression is only spread over 2/3rds of the spring, making that 3 inches on the remaining spring 'feel' like 4.5 inches to it... this is a cheap upgrade, just buy higher-rated springs and do it right. you can all hate me now, but working on vehicles for 40 years, I'll stick with what i have seen with my own eyes.
