This song was a spur of the moment song& was improvised & recorded in about 15-20 minutes. Drummer John Bonham was frustrated trying to get the song Four Sticks down. He was playing Four Sticks with 2 sticks in each hand, he stopped to take a break. Bonham started playing the introduction to Little Richard’s song Keep-A-Knocking. Page grabbed his guitar & started just free styling, plant & JPJ jumped in. My understanding, the were in the studio & the tape was already rolling. This song was the opening number to many concerts, as was The Immigrant Song. So we got two songs instead of just one, Rock & Roll & Four Sticks.

I really enjoy watching younger folks listen to these bands for the first time. It's the look of absolute amazement on your faces that I find so endearing. I've seen those looks before, it was how my friends looked at these concerts. And, I daresay, it was how I looked too. Great music, great memories, great reaction!
I was 17 in '71 and I grew up in Vancouver, BC. I was fortunate to have seen Led Zeppelin three times. When I say fortunate, it's because a lot of bands, when they were touring, used to blow right by Vancouver. This was because our stadium could only take 20,000 people. So "money grubbing" bands like Santana or the Stones would bypass Vancouver entirely and go to Seattle instead. Not Led Zeppelin, they never missed Vancouver and we loved them for that.

1971 I was 13 years old, 7th grade, attending those horribly clumsy junior high school dances where everybody just stood around staring at each other. Until this song was played. Nobody could stay still when this played. My older brothers brought home all of the LZ albums and I played them even more than they did. "Fun." You said it. That whole era of music from about 1967 through the early 80s was, in my mind, the greatest time ever for new and imaginative music. And these guys were without a doubt, leading the charge.

  • @HollisDuty60
    @HollisDuty60 2 месяца назад +8

Took them about 15 minutes to compose this song - it was a jam that started with John Bonham on drums, Jimmy chimed in, Ian Stewart of the Rolling Stones was sitting at an old piano and he joined in with JPJ. Robert came up with lyrics that pulled from several old R&R songs plus what came to his mind. Bonham was frustrated trying to get Four Sticks and he started this Little Richard riff from “Keep A Knockin”. Jimmy told the band to forget Four Sticks and let’s go with this right now. He like the spontaneity and the creative combustion.
I have been a fan since 1969, so when LZ IV came out in 1971, my brothers bought it and I’d sneak into their room and listen to it. This song made me immediately jump up and dance. It’s an upbeat, happy tune. After the supposedly “acoustic” LZ III, this song showed that Led Zeppelin could still rock it and rock it hard.

@@peterdoe2617 you are quite welcome. I have about 9 books on Led Zeppelin, Jimmy, and Robert. One of the most interesting is called LED ZEPPELIN / ALL THE SONGS / The Story Behind Every Track by Jean-Michel Guesdon & Phillips Margotin.
It tells you everything you could possibly want to know about each album and then each song on the album. Truly, it has the most interesting info. Genesis of the Album, Genesis of each song. The production of each album and each song. Who played what. Where and when it was recorded and mixed. The technical team members. Plus fascinating insights about the band. I highly recommend it.

The year was 1971.We both heard it and started to dance Boogie woogie by the entrance. People looked on us and some said, that poor boy don’t have a clue how big of a mess he is in. Today in 2024 we adopting dogs and a few weeks ago a little but aged boy was adopted by us. One day this song was on the radio and my wife ( still the same one ) and me started or wanted to start to dance. 2 years after graduation and I was going with the first love of my life. Led Zepplin was boss! It was considered underground music when it came out. Summers water skiing, tanning on the beach and going to music concerts and dancing. Times of loose airy light-hearted, care-free living. Then enlistment, basic training and going overseas during the Viet Nam War. Fortunately I went to Europe for 2 years where I saw Elton, Grand Funk, Beach Boys, Eagles, Guess Who, Clapton and every group that played in London every weekend '74- 76. Also, bartending in the NCO club on base I met all the Philly bands, Three Degrees, Stylistics, Spinners, Chairman of the Board, O-Jays end many more. Love the '60's and 70's.

Let's see, 1971 junior or senior in high school. My friend John Comerford shows up at my house with this album. Mom's out so we spark up, drop it on my Gerard turntable connected to my Radio Shack amp and a pair of Ampex bookshelf speakers and proceed to begin to contribute to my future tinnitus problems. Not long after that we got to see them live at Madison Square Garden where they opened with Immigrant Song. The concert ran long and we missed the last Erie Lackawanna train back to NJ so the other guy we were with, whom we knew came from money though he never acted like it, made a pay phone call and next thing we knew we were in his Dad's limo heading back home. Good times...

I was 13 when that album came out. I absolutely loved it. They got quite a few songs from the 50s and made them better. They were one of the super bands where every song on the album is top notch. This particular song was a radio hit along with Black Dog and Stairway to Heaven. They were my favorite band in Jr. High and High School. My school friends and I used to party in a big station wagon with loose home speakers in the back later in 74 when Stairway to Heaven came on the radio. A lot of people drove around drunk back then including the parents. There was no such thing as the term, "designated driver". It was fun but dangerous.

I was college freshman lining in NJ close to NYC. The fourth album was so diverse, Black Dog, Rock & Roll, When the Levee Breaks, Four Sticks and of course Stairway to Heaven. Each song so difference. I played guitar and bass in the 70s and since Led Zeppelin 1, my band covered Zeppelin songs. I saw them live July 29, 1973 in Madison Square Garden, one of the three nights that was filmed as part of their 'Song Remains The Same' movie. The four of them, Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham just meshed, their music, talent, and raw drive made them superstars. Their song catalogue was so diverse that listeners sometimes didn't realise the expanse and range of their talents. They ruled. Saw them again live in 1975. They are one of my top favorite bands, which also include Yes, Pink Floyd, The Who, Genesis, The Beatles, Moody Blues, of which I saw live with the exception of The Beatles, although I went to George Harrison's Bangladesh concert, and Pink Floyd. In fact, 'Thank You' from Led Zeppelin 2 is our wedding song.

Then this and I started to dance and play air guitar my face melted. The two remaining songs on this side are epic. The complete 4´th album is fantastic! Live is where this song really shines.

I was super young when this came out. I obviously heard a lot of Zep on the radio growing up tho.
I was 17. My cousins girlfriend had runaway from home and the families ageeed she’s life with us: she lived with me in my attic room for the school year tho she’d dropped out. We were all into hardcore punk rock - back when piercing and Mohawks and guys with eyeliner could get you beat up. The two of us were moving into paychadwlic and other alternative music. I get really into the doors then both of us got way into Hendrix and Zeppelin. That was the first time I’d listen to this album front to back and of course it’s incredible. Really immersive.

I was 12 years old in 1970 and honestly I was late to the Led Zeppelin party. In my defense, I lived in a small city in the centre of BC Canada, where we had two AM radio stations, that DID NOT play much rock n roll. I do not remember getting introduced to Zeppelin until "In through the out door". But once I got into my late teens and found Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, I never looked back. Been a solid rock n roller ever since.

... I was 13 years old in 1971 & having very, very good times with friends in our selfmaneged "Church Club"-> some rooms in a small building close to a catholic (!) church provided to us by the priest there to keep us teens occupied in ' a safeway'... 🤔 So we met there regularly, learned about flirting.... and danced a lot, especially extreme headbanging was a must... Simple things, wonderful time 🎉😀... Thanks Rosalie, love from Crete... 🙋‍♀️🤗💞💪

Hi! I was born in '71 so I didn't have the distinct pleasure of hearing them/this until I got a bit older, in the late '70s I would say because I have a stepbrother who is 6 years older than me and he was responsible for turning me onto all the latest and greatest tunes back then. My favorite Decade is still the '80s though, and most of what I listen to these days is the same old stuff that I grew up on through middle and high school - KISS, Motley Crue, RATT, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, etc, etc, etc. 🙂

I was 20 at the time, having just served a tour in the army. I attended a concert of theirs while stationed stateside in Atlanta. I'd been a fan since album one track one, By 1971, they were rock and roll gods who strode the musical landscape head and shoulders above other Bands that Are legends in their own right. The Rolling Stones, The Who, Janis Joplin, and John Lennon, a small sampling of the incredible talent in that era which produced some of the greatest music ever. 50 years later, it's still popular, relevant, and appreciated Please consider another group from that era and one of my favorites as well.CSNY. From the iconic Suite: Judt Blue Eyes to the heavenly harmonies of 49 Bye Byes ,, they produced some of the best music of the era. Please give a listen, 49 bye bye sis fave.

In 1971 I was 13 years old, and I was still just developing my musical taste. I Grew up listening to my parents and grandparents music, and found myself drawn to Elvis, Jerry Lee, Ottis Reading, Booker T and the MG’s, and of course The Beatles. But then I was introduced to the likes of The Rolling Stones, ZZTOP, Cream, The Who, and of course Zeppelin around 1969. That’s when everything changed for me. As an older man now, I’ve come to enjoy many different genres, but my heart and soul are in Rock &Roll. 🎼🎸🥁🎹. ✌🏼😎🇺🇸

While I bought this album back in '71, my favorite version of this song comes from about 6 years later. Way back on August 16th, 1977, man, it's been 47 years, ugh, during their encode, Heart pulled this one out and dedicated it to Elvis, the king of Rock and Roll, on the day he passed away.

I wasn't yet in kindergarten in 1971, so I can't speak to how the song landed initially. But in 1981 my buddies and I were playing this one in our garage band. We had a great drummer. He went pro when we got older.

Where was I when I first heard this album? Middle School shop class. Shop teachers tend to be cool and ours would allow us to put a record on while we were doing our woodworking projects. This was one of our favorites.

I was a sophomore in HS, and our band played this shortly after it came out. I was usually the lead singer, but our sax player had a vocal tone similar to Robert Plant, so he took the lead on this one. We also had a phenomenal drummer who was in 8th grade, and put us all to shame !!
    Great memories !!

in 71 i was 2.. but i discovered led zeppelin when i was about 9.. already a fairly decent guitar player.. because my father was a professional country fiddle player.. i grew up playing music with family.. but when i discovered rock music.. that set me off on a journey discovering different bands and playing all these songs.. Black Dog was the 1st Led Zeppelin song i heard.. i was hooked.. now.. 50+ years later.. I've covered their entire catalog at one time or another.. I've been in led zeppelin cover bands.. Rush cover bands.. Van Halen cover bands.. played everything thing from blues to metal.. country to classic rock.. zeppelin never gets old.. seeing you discovering it is so refreshing.. i love your reaction.. and you are so super sexy.. mmm.. daddy like..

It was played as an outro, when we where there at that concert in Bremen, 1980. 1971, I was only 11yrs old ;-)
When Bonzo had passed away, it was even on the german "Tagesschau" (the news at 8pm). And I did cry for this loss. Believe it or not: we felt that Bonzo was more connected with us, audience,
than any other member of the band was. And:YES! It is a song that makes you wanna jump around and dance!
Timesless (if you're into this kinda music). Pure fun!

Good stuff, Rosalie! Well, I was only 2 when this came out, but I probably first heard this when I was in high school in the 80's. When I was a kid in the 70s LZ was more my older brother's speed. But I caught the Led Zeppelin bug big time in high school and have had it ever since! I saw Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in concert this Summer and they actually play a slowed-down, folky version of this, and other Zeppelin songs.

I was 10 years old in 1971, and I was just a couple of years away from really getting into music. When I DID get into music, this was it. Led Zeppelin IV was one of my first albums, and I was absolutely hooked! I went right out and got LZ I, II, and III as soon as I could save enough from cutting lawns. Rock & Roll is still one of my favorites. 3 or 4 of my Top 10 songs are from this one album, and a couple of others from other LZ albums. They are THAT good. Thanks for your input!!!!
FYI, Heart does a fantastic rendition of Rock & Roll. You should look for it and listen - I have it on their Greatest Hits Live album.
You raised a good point - this song sounds like earlier songs and is a nod to earlier genres. Reminds me a bit of Johnny B Goode in places, especially how it starts off.

Hi there! So I saw Zeppelin for the first time in the summer of 72 but I didn’t know their music at all and I was not familiar with any songs from this album, including Stairway, believe it or not! But within a couple of months after seeing them, I had every album and this song just brings me back to when I was 14 years old and getting my first stereo and listening to FM rock radio rather than AM pop radio. This band started it all for me and until the day I die they will be the greatest of all!

It's a shame the original Led Zeppelin stopped in 1980. And only in 2007 did they give a single reunion concert at the O2 Hall (they were so good there!) instead of going on tour again. John Bonham would certainly have said: “Keep going!” His son and John Paul Jones would have deserved it. But today, soft pop stars like Ed Sheran, Taylor Swift, Adele, Coldplay, etc. are filling stadiums around the world in a way that rock bands have never managed to do before. Not even the Rolling Stones today. Many stadiums with 70,000 seats even on five days in a row... Soft poppers, no rock bands... I don't understand that. It's a strange world today!...
