But yes the US did materially and militarily help Australia at many points after its late entry into the war (at which point Aussie troops, sailors, and airmen had already been fighting and dying for two years). But that has nothing to do with the obvious batsh*t insanity of US politics.

Then there is the personality type (which exists everywhere). It desires structure, authority, black and white clear distinctions, hierarchies, absolutes. They are concerned with race, ethnicity, and especially anything related to gender and sexuality. They need rules and they want them applied to everyone.
They do not like nuance, flexibility, change, open exploration of ideas.
It breaks their entire world. They are terrified.
As a Canadian, I can confirm, we look at each other when we see American news, we're all very confused and worried about y'all - it's like watching a loved one struggle with an addiction

I really used to think (as a child) how lucky i was to be born in the USA, "land of the free", especially when I'd catch sight of the horrid conditions elsewhere. Then i grew up, opened my eyes and things are progressing.... And NOW i feel so very saddened that i live in the United states. The place where we protect your right to have any INSANE and unfounded theories, and to act on those... But where we have kids that we fear to send to school, and homelessness and hunger and people rationing effin insulin. Insane.

Plus euro countries in general are much more free than USA, I always found it strange that Americans compare themselves to third world countries rather than similarly wealthy nations. I guess that’s the way to make things look better for Americans than they are

Maybe because our news hardly ever presents any wealthy countries... I didn't even think of it that way before.... You low-key just blew my mind. (I do know that some hard core American Nationalists do compare the US to wealthy European countries and claim that we are better because the EU countries are 'socialist'. So they bring the arguments that you have to wait for subpar healthcare and taxes are super high, etc.)
As an Australian it's the same from my perspective. People seem to get very angry about things they didn't even know existed the day before, but the "news anchor" was angry so I need to be too.

The good news is that they rarely get any real success. Even our 'standard' conservative party has had their arses handed to them in both federal and state elections with them being in power in only one state and even then as a minority government (< 50% of the seats and relying on independents and third party members to get legislation passed).
I'm not saying the more left wing parties are angels. They have their own issues, but that is a whole different story.
@@saraleigh5336, the US has been a problem for a long time. For me, my concerns raised significantly with the emergence of the Tea Party and I wondered how they could ever elect a president as stupid as George W. "At least they'll learn a valuable lesson" I foolishly thought.

The last several Republican presidents (including W) haven’t won the popular vote. We have a system that favors minoritarian power. Again, this is not a new insight, but easier to observe than correct.

I lived in the Netherlands 2018-2020. The Netherlands has a private health insurance system, and everyone is required to have insurance. I was there under the Dutch American Friendship Treaty which mandated that I not take any subsidies from the Dutch gov't. My health insurance premium was 116 euros (in-network) in 2019 and 131 euros (universal) in 2020, including optional dental. No copays for routine visits, incl. psychotherapy. Deductible was 385 euros. Now I am on Obamacare. The full premium is $646, but I pay $215 with subsidies. Copays around $35, and deductible is $7000.
Millions of Americans also believe a large portion of our country has gone mad.

Was gone from US for about 15 years, then was back there recently for a couple years. My take is that most Americans are bored with their lives and have issues with casual interactions with strangers. So, they are now into laws and rules that mess with other people. If I were rich, I would put our billboards all over the US , saying "grow up and get a life"

When the pandemic hit and masks were needed, here in Australia I remember the news host saying “the Americans aren’t going to like this”! 🥴 IMO a lot of the problems are due to what’s NOT taught in schools. i.e anything about other countries! This makes for an insular mindset.

My very Liberal dad's side of the family stopped our annual reunion for 2 years and in 2022 everyone but infants were wearing masks. No one got sick.
Meanwhile, my mom's very Conservative side of the family never stopped their reunions. No one wore masks. A bunch of them ended up with Covid afterwards. A few died.

Not sure what you saw when you came over, but we definitely do have this in the UK. The Conservative deputy chairman (Lee Anderson) literally said they would be fighting the next election on 'culture wars and trans debate'.
My husband was in London during the Bill Clinton Lewinski scandal and he said on the news they considered this a non issue and wondered why we focus on that when there is so much to worry about than that. The people he worked with over they laughed and made jokes about how ridiculous the R's were making a big deal over sex. I can only wonder what they think since 2016 and even worse NOW.

As someone living in the Caribbean, I can say this is true. At the same time though, American culture trickles down into ours, and our society are taking cues here and there. Especially toxic ones. They are enticing as they encourage classism by various parameters (race, orientation, gender etc -- and yes that includes in the other direction, not just the one you're thinking of.)

I find Ron DeSatan unhinged. What if he was governor in the 80's when there was a prime time show over the air that had two men that dressed as women. It was called Bosom buddies. If that was in reruns, would DeSatan outlaw watching TV between the hours of 7-8? I don't know anyone that was harmed by it, and I knew plenty of children that watched it. They all grew up normal. Is Ron DeSatan really that unsure if his sexuality,and the sexuality of his children that he has to take our Freedoms away? How about he just goes to therapy, and leaves us alone. European here: its not so much your culture wars that we find crazy but the fact that you basically have a two-party System in place (just one more than North Korea) yet consider yourself the beacon of democracy! Every european country has 5, 6, 7 (or more) political parties and every election it is upon the voters to educate themselves who the candidate that best represents their views is this time around. In my 40 years I have NEVER once heard something like "Well my whole family/town/county is red/blue/green/pink... so I am as well". That seems more like tribalism and less like political education
Here in Australia most people I know think the US is insane, but unfortunately we have a few right wing politicians who are inspired by the likes of DeSantis. The leader of one party has taken up the cudgel against drag shows with such vehemence that several drag story time library sessions had to be called off because of the threats made to library staff members. The state Minister for Inclusion responded by inviting I think five of them to set up the story time in the parliament instead and invited the families to them there. Unfortunately what happens in the US right wing gets picked up too easily by certain people here.
Its not surprising that DeSantis cannot see the good in the Drag Queens shows…he has the personslity of a stop sign and absolutely no sense of fun. Although I do have to admit a hell of a lot of people had a colossal laugh over his squeeky clean tight knee-high white boots from the floods. 🤦♀️

I friend of mine is from England he has been here since the late 90's because Lockheed Martin needed smarter people than the US was producing. He is now a citizen and would never think about going back to England until now that DuhSantis is our governor. Actually he's thinking about moving to another state but it depends on Lockheed so for right now he is stuck here and he's not looking for another job/career. He said when they had the bible thumpers in England trying to take over the government by passing laws that adhere to their religious beliefs. He said the Tories are just like the MAGA republiCONS they lie to their constituents and try to make laws that are based solely on religion. He said that since they have so many parties they really aren't very effective but here with only 2 parties really and one is going that way we might be in big trouble unless it is nipped in the bud ASAP. I totally agree that is why if your against book banning, banning trans care and abortions, limiting free speech in schools and Drag shows you need to vote for the candidate that is against all of it. When the republiCONS say they are for free speech they are for what they say is free speech so don't get hoodwinked with them lying because when it comes down to it they vote with all the MAGA members no questions asked.

There is a massive difference between the cost of a standard test on a cat, for example, than for a human. They are the exact same tests using the same machinery. Bloodwork, urinalysis, and x-rays cost way more for a human than for a cat.
Where are you from. In Germany it is the opposite! For humans it is free, for pets it can get costly, because that is your private hobby😃

I’m so glad to hear that the culture wars in the USA has not yet penetrated European countries. As a Canadian, I find it sneaking into our politics with politicians nitpicking on issues not at all for the benefit of the average Canadian. And the attitude expressed by personal acquaintances whom I feel are some very un accepting of those who are not like them but tend to blame the current government. I am leery of the far right attitude leaning ever closer to maga republican views.
The American virus is starting to affect us here in Germany. Right-wing politicians from Bavaria visited DeSantis lately, and when they came back they tried to forbid a drag-queen story hour for kids. ... All it did was raise a short outcry by "normal" citizens and after two days the incident was forgotten😃
