This I why I use to watch him as a young teen back in the 80’s! He took me places that I had to learn to explore and learn to play ALL STYLES OF MUSIC!!!
'I auditioned for Frank Zappa on the drumset of Terry Bozzio. It was a doublekick and I've never played them before, but I said, Screw this - I'm going for it!' - Vinnie Colaiuta.
Lucky I have been to be a drummer growing up in New York in the 70's and 80's...I got to see maybe the 2 greatest drummers ever..!! Tony Williams and Vinnie...and seeing both many..many times..too many to count...Been following Vinnie all my life ( we are the same age )....and seeing Tony before we lost him...BOTH..!! breath Fire..!!!With Vinnie being very similar in style..They are for me the Greatest players...Ever..!!!
First I’m listening to this guy (other than Zappa back in the day), my friend said “he’s the GOAT” & wow I’m not sure I could argue. This guy can do IT ALL.
12:24 is the ultimate "Vinnie-ism". One of those total subtle badass fills that he does. Some mega fast triplets with ghost notes on the snare, then this super-creative hi-hat bark, all while never losing the backbeat. GOAT.
Vinnie is amazing but don't discount the level of musicians he's playing with. Let's face it, if he played some of that stuff with lower calibre players they would be lost within 2 bars. Great player & great video, thank you!
They would be lost you’re correct. He always hits the accents the band plays as he solos or does licks between the hits or accents . Much like weckl does. Truely unreal
Well, Herbie is often lost on Vinnie's solo on "Actual Proof", and a LOT of heavy weight musicians can be lost too, Vinnie goes so far sometimes, but, nobody is to blame, it happens to almost EVERYBODY.
7:52 his bass drum almost toppled forward, even for studio sessions, his power is absolute. From all those living drum legends, for sure Vinnie is clearly on the top in term of tonal quality (and that also specified exactly one of the reasons he is the most sought studio drummer in the universe, beside his godly sight reading)
OF COURSE THE EXTRA WEIGHT AROUND THE MIDDLE IS HELPING HIM QUITE A BIT .... A bit to portly , concerned for his health more than anything else ... I like Vinnie . hey man diet a bit!
@@jd70HJ19 I guess I saw him in some latest vids he got skinnier so much, wearing some slightly loose clothing, and that bump on stomach also shrinking :/
Every time I hear another drummer who is in the upper echelon trying to take the crown, I come back to Vinnie clips and am quickly brought back to reality. The guy is a jack of all trades and a master of them, too. Rare air this guy breathes.
Neither Vinnie nor anyone else can be considered the GOAT drummer, but if there is ANYONE who is in the conversation, it is Vinnie Colaiuto. He sight read The Black Page -- while drinking a Coke!
Weeeeeeeellllll, I wouldn't go that far. Vinnie is damn bad ass, no doubt about that. G.O.A.T for me has to be Buddy Rich. I know it sounds cliche, but I've never seen anyone better than him. There wasn't a thing he couldn't do.
Fun fact: The Vinnie Colauita who is the subject of this video compilation, it the same Vinnie Colauita mentioned it the Frank Zappa song "Catholic Girls".
He's the man. Must be a Chaffee thing to him & steve smith both do this crazy hand-foot-hamd-foot-hand-foot lick. I've studied the Patterns Series. Love them. I recorded myself doing a solo & i break into that lick, then a few measures later i do it again faster, & i had NO IDEA i even did this, but on play back, u can hear me holler, "ahhh! Take THAT Steve Smith!!!" & I just DIED laughing
0:20 is absolutely VICIOUS. I could watch him all day long. He's so fluid, and smooth....yet powerful. And, he's not completely lost his mind with the Hollywood politics, with is causing me to not want to watch these players, at all, at this point. And, his drums always sound spectacular. Not sure what brands he's playing (like at that 0:20 mark). whomever was filming this apparently owned the cheapest camera available....but, I digress (which I didn't think was possible in 2019-2020)...but, I digress.
1:20 Thundercat steals the show, he is the only player I have ever seen who steals all the Thunder -lol from Herbie Hancock. I love the Bass player next to him too (he is from SNL!)
Vinnie, if you're reading this, take it from me. I tried everything to shed pounds until I landed on the answer -- intermittent fasting. That is an unfortunate name for simply choosing a time of day and not eating anything after that. It works! You don't have to change what you eat (although I recommend throwing in a giant salad every day). Keep all you eating to within a 7 hour period -- 8 hours if you must. It's like adding space to a groove. It's 3/4 time -- 1 beat of eating, 2 beats of fasting. Man does your body like that rhythm. We are creatures of occasional eating. It is MUCH harder to eat selectively than to fast entirely. I really believe this is the only way.
It looks like mostly, though some videos he's playing Traditionals, and the one Jeff Beck show the big china is a Masters....swish?? It looks like he plays what he can get, and it's usually what he's known to play on stage, typically.
Love Vinnie. He gets away with some seriously naughty over playing. He’s a big kid sometimes, trying to see what he can get away with live. In the studio, he’s the master of tasteful playing.
Vinnie has got to be one of the ALL-TIME greats, really.
The best thing for me about Vinnie is that he does all this crazy stuff, and then goes out on tour with sting and plays songs.
He does crazy shit in the studio with sting too
Vinnie: “hey Sting show me the money!”
He’s got to eat, because let’s face it no one actually listens to the tedious wankfest that fusion is.
This gig is to enjoy and the other to pay the bills
All the crazy stuff is not music. Ok, dude.
Man, what can you say? One of the greatest of his generation or any generation for that matter.
Sink or swim!
So wonderful to see a video comp of recent Vinnie, STILL, completely at the top of his game and absolutely killing it.
Seeing Vinnie in a jam with Thundercat of all people makes me feel things
That room was full of cool cats!

We know.
My most favourite drummer of all time.
People say that there's no such thing as "Best Drummer in the world". I gotta say, It has to be Vinnie.
12:24 is the ultimate "Vinnie-ism". One of those total subtle badass fills that he does. Some mega fast triplets with ghost notes on the snare, then this super-creative hi-hat bark, all while never losing the backbeat. GOAT.
unfortunately the song sucks ass
Vinnie is amazing but don't discount the level of musicians he's playing with. Let's face it, if he played some of that stuff with lower calibre players they would be lost within 2 bars. Great player & great video, thank you!
Can't agree more. As I drummer, I love watching Vinnie, but what I'd give for a jam with Rhonda Smith...
They would be lost you’re correct. He always hits the accents the band plays as he solos or does licks between the hits or accents . Much like weckl does. Truely unreal

My favorite drummer. Saw him live with Herbie 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Me too

The only one who can solo in 7/13th, with his other hand eating sushi while he's looking at the sheet music for the next song.
I think that was Jeff Porcaro trying out for Zappa. It apparently pissed Zappa off. Vinnie played with Frank, obviously. Great story nonetheless.
And putting his glasses right on his nose while playing
@@frankdoane2898 it was vinnie. Steve vai’s story
@@frankdoane2898 ...no it was Vinnie.
Legit just discovered this dude less then 5 mins ago and plan on watching this whole video til the end
Have you listened to Joe’s Garage by now?
Vinnie is the best of the best.
Vinnie's playing is so unpredictable. That's why there are only two drummers in the world. Vinnie and others.
..............So true!!!!!!!!!!
Every time I hear another drummer who is in the upper echelon trying to take the crown, I come back to Vinnie clips and am quickly brought back to reality. The guy is a jack of all trades and a master of them, too. Rare air this guy breathes.
To me he‘s the greatest ever, but music ain‘t sports.
Vinnie THE BEST fo WORLD !
Amazing drummer. Love his work
Neither Vinnie nor anyone else can be considered the GOAT drummer, but if there is ANYONE who is in the conversation, it is Vinnie Colaiuto. He sight read The Black Page -- while drinking a Coke!
21 minutes of New Vinne era Decade.... Life gives you a gift always with Vinnie. God blessed Us !! Vinnie is here !!
With Vin. I never hear drums I always hear music. Not too many drummers can do that..
Well said sir. With him it's not 'sport', it"s music.
3:14 - 4:05 will be unmatched in our lifetime.
@MorbidManMusic Again I guess we know who gave a thumb down.
Do you know that song? Its "You know, you know" by mahavishnu orchestra billy cobham is a legend
the greatest of all time, the drummers drummer
Mariano yes. Almost as good as Per Lindvall :)
@@rickrick9510 no idea who per lenvall is
There is NO such thing as the greatest of all time. There are too many people out there that can play world class drums.
Chris Curtis is there such a thing as better, to you?
Weeeeeeeellllll, I wouldn't go that far. Vinnie is damn bad ass, no doubt about that. G.O.A.T for me has to be Buddy Rich. I know it sounds cliche, but I've never seen anyone better than him. There wasn't a thing he couldn't do.

Super drummer
The greatest ever
Fun fact: The Vinnie Colauita who is the subject of this video compilation, it the same Vinnie Colauita mentioned it the Frank Zappa song "Catholic Girls".
He played on that entire album, along with Zappa’s band from 1978-1981!
fell out of my chair at clip 3.
What song is clip 4? Sounds amazing!
Old but gold
what's clip 10 ?

Ja gravou a maior dupla pop da america latina. (Sandy & junior)
Até com o Megadeth ele já tocou 🔪🔥👏🔪🔥👏 p/mim, o Vinnie Colaiuta é TOP 10 DE TODOS OS TEMPOS, independentemente de estilo.
💝
When the "why" kicks the "whats" ass !
He’s pretty good. 😏
I've never seen Vinnie play matched grip both here he does in several clips. What happened?
i've seen him switch up it a few times

Does Vinnie use all Modern essentials 602s

drummaman1 cool man, thanks 🙏
He is 64 years old. Damn.
Love Vinnie. He gets away with some seriously naughty over playing.
He’s a big kid sometimes, trying to see what he can get away with live. In the studio, he’s the master of tasteful playing.
The sushi Zappa Autobiography incident is worth looking in to.
All you gotta hear is the name “VINNIE”, and any decent drummer knows it’s this vinnie. No disrespect to Vinnie Appice.
I expect bad ass drumming. I listen, and it's EVEN MORE bad ass!!!
I remember Vinnie as playing mostly traditional grip.
Mike Kelly he’s grown.
No!! Played strictly matched when
he was with Zappa & Joni Mitchell!
So dang musical
