I've heard Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" in a 100+ settings, and it is different each time (even when played by the same musicians). Masterful job by Herbie, Christian, and Vinnie!
I'm so immensely proud to be part their generation - their influence on 20'th century music is innestimable and Vinnie... hands down - there are many really, really great and talented drummers, but no one touches Vinnie's undying versatility and endless ablity to surprise. His game never settled in routine and repetitive patterns, he never seizes to amaze .
Cousin von Erich I agree. If you listen to a lot of his bootlegged drum clinic solos. He hardly repeats himself. Always sounding fresh. In one of his clinics, he said that he really doesn’t care if he makes a mistake. He always goes for stuffs that’s new to him on the spot. Maybe that’s why he has a vast array of vocabulary to speak on the drums.
I was there!!! This was in 2019. We had a double dose of Herbie that year at Newport. Friday Night he closed out the event on the main stage. Then he returned on Saturday to the Quad Stage and hit with these heavy cats. Big fun!
Fingers crossed this band will accompany Herbie next summer in Europe since I finally will be able to witness them live. The freshness and the level of suprise and musicianship is insane!
Effortless flow.. The underlying time is nailed, but they play around with it with rhythmic diminution or augmentation or superimposed metric modulation. And it all seems so seemless and natural. WOW!!
I am thrilled to see the energetic Herbie Hancock. He should be 79 years old if this concert was in 2019. Anyway, The mark on Christian McBride's cap is the Giants of the Japanese professional baseball team!
That bass player is the one with DUKE TRIO and that other crazy ass young drummer whom made my jaw drop. WOW !! TREMENDOUS !! Carry on the torch !! JAZZ TO ME IS LIKE CLASSIC MUSIC TO EVERYONE .
Wayne Shorter's Footprints is such a cool tune for improvisation. Herbie Hancock was on the first two original recordings of this tune. The one with Miles Davis had Vinnie Coliauta's hero on it... Tony Williams. McBride is so damn amazing all these guys listen to each other like their lives depend on it. They sound like they would die for one another. What can be said about Vinnie Coliauta??? He's a complete combo of everything great in drumming rolled into a nice Vinnie package... One of my favorite drummers since I first watched him back in 89' on Ziljion day NY 1984 and The Buddy Rich tribute scholarship 89'. Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage, Tinseltown Rebellion, Allan Holdsworth Secrets.
Has anyone else noticed around 8:00….8:08…behind the curtain, there’s a silhouette of guy adjusting a Mike stand to the bottom left of Mcbude….who appears to be mimicking McBride!?!
I think Tony Williams was one of the first guys to stray away from the traditional jazz drum set on an acoustic jazz setting. He used bigger “rock” sized kits.
14:37 peel your ears piano players . HH is playing an Instrument from the percussion section . what a blast for Vinnie to be in the presence of this Icon CmacB is killin' it too of course .
nevermind trying to emulate Vinnie's parts, I just consider it a personal accomplishment when I can keep counting the pulse through Vinnie's solos and not lose the plot! His overlaid headfake patterns are just crazy
Dear Herbie, it was really a shame that Vinnie couldn't come to your last show in Argentina (Luna Park Stadium). We really miss his incredible way of backing up and playing his drums.
To the 18 people who disliked this video, my greatest sympathy for lack of entertainment, any hearing impediment must be excruciatingly debilitating. Audio commentary.... Herbie Hancock single handedly rewrites the harmony rule book AGAIN, changing an empty room / tent into an artistic space worthy of world class notoriety by exorcising a unique class of audible vibrations. Christian and Vinnie of course providing an exquisite sandwich.
Im in a fog after hearing about Chick.... we need to bubble wrap Herbie, we could all take turns caring him around town! All my teachers/heros are passing! Oh yea im 58 that would explain a lot ... :)
It's 2019 and Herbie looks the same he did decades ago. He's what, in his seventies , his hair looks like a man in his twenties. What does that mean eat?!
It's like that sometimes. You have photographers, readies, and techs. Even at some of my gigs, though they be small stages, my budy/ tech is standing to the side of me or in the front row of the audience.
Vinnie is just too damn good man! Ridiculous, Christian is so fun to watch the way he makes it look so easy! And Herbie is just masterful
Vinnie Colaiuta...... everything he plays... wow.... all 3 of these guys... wow!
For Herbie to be playing not only at this level at his age BUT continue to grow, with his playing and phrasing is unbelievable

Musicianship at its zenith. Just mind blowing, the creativity, and how they listen to each other.
This was truly amazing. That Vinnie plays with a lightening fast feel, but with complete accuracy. Remarkable.

Vinnie Colaiuta snare sound is so on point ... damm
and much too loud. This must be a FOH mix. Piano also not what I would expect from a Fazioli.
@@ReinerDamisch I find it quite where it should be in terms of general volume. It is vinnie. He puts weight and intention in every stroke ...
Titanium!
@@viviencharrier1984 yes. In his solo you can hear all the drums evenly. Very well said.
And it seems to be the 12x4 model
Holy hell. A beautiful conversation between true masters of their art. Incredible. I want to hear the whole thing!!!
Fingers crossed this band will accompany Herbie next summer in Europe since I finally will be able to witness them live. The freshness and the level of suprise and musicianship is insane!
The best Drums vinnie colaiuta !
Effortless flow.. The underlying time is nailed, but they play around with it with rhythmic diminution or augmentation or superimposed metric modulation. And it all seems so seemless and natural. WOW!!
damn vinnie..........
i just...
love you, man
The giant and master Herbie Hancock...going sixty years strong!!
Try 80 at the time right
Beautiful snare sound.
What a super trio.. really would love to watch the whole thing.
que buenoo..que reunion maravillosa de talento y creatividad..Herbie genio ..maestro...mago

Great, great, great. Herbie's good friend Wayne Shorter's tune.
Thank you.
Upload the whole gig!!!

I'm in tears that was so good!
All time three greatest comin together? An obvious bomb! An instant classic
This was 2019, Harbor Stage. Outstanding performance. Packed inside, outside and surrounding areas of the tent. Should have been on main stage.
Vinnie is a great drummer❤️. And he can eat the 20lb Pizza 😬
Please post the hole concert !!!! This is incredible !
Whole
Maybe he’s a Courtney Love fan
@@MrMikey1615 Haha! Yes maybe :)
Yes please!
La hora de los maestros. Nada hay que agregar. Sólo disfrutar.
9:33 from 79 looking 65, to 39! Long live Herbie and his smile

My favorite pianist, Jazz master, Mr. Herbie !. love him!
A musician of the highest order. No living musician stretches this musical form to the limits that only the immortals envisioned.
Not sure if this is a FOH mix. But IF so it's on point. Everything clear w nuances consistent from loud to soft. And in a tent too! Nicely done.
Incredible!
Wow! Playing at this tempo with all dramatic dynamic and complex phrasing yet so solid and fluent amd musical, a group of super master.
Incredible. Loving the new cymbal set up. Timing !
Masters Class.

what a treat indeed
Treat to 🚬 cigarettes
Fantastic. Thanks for uploading.
All round player Vinnie!!!!
Softly as a Morning Sunrise @ about 1:43 If I were a Bell 3:06
Great bass playing!!
Herbie the greatest!
still love this guys!!
Vinnie is my hero!
Like the marines say, "Many are called, but Vinnie is chosen".
He's not in my top 3 faves, but I do enjoy his playing a lot. I love his battle with Weckle at burning for budy. Truly epic!!!
@@frankspikes7858 Yeah, same here. I tend to like the older legends better myself, but the chops of guys like Vinnie and Weckl are awesome.
C’est dans les vieux pots qu’on fait la bonne soupe 🍜 !!
👏👏👏
vinnie Has changed sticks from VCf to vater how know what model of vater is used ?
Mcbride is such a beautiful bass player, and that Vinnie can bring a rock kit to a jazz tune and still make it work.
like Steve Gadd😀

Si.. vino un batero q no es malo pero tocaba todo con la misma dinámica. . Y los platos eran muy duros..
Vinnie with a Craviotto snare !!!
Just noticed the same ;) :)!
Killin it
I was there, it was summer 2019, not 2018.
hey christian! are you tokyo giants fan? I'm buffaloes fan🎉
When the name "Vinnie" is mentioned.......There ISN'T ANY multiple choice needed!!!!!!!

I’ve never seen a drummer switch between traditional and match grip like that 🤯
They chillin'
Best Free Jazz ever 😍
Very open traditional grip of Vinnie! But what does he do with that 14x4"Side Snare on the left in a classical Jazztrio Setup!
Sometimes puts his ash tray on it.
wtf!!! vinnie's trading 4s now...... so gooood
The year on this video is wrong... it was last summer (2019), not 2018
Thanks for clarifying that date. I was like 🤔
What is the piccolo snare???
craviotto?
Yeaaaahh
At first I was like oh this is nice but then I realised they are just fucking shadowboxing so hard in the most beautiful way possible
Bringing that old cool style right back
3:14 Licc
7:50 Bass Licc
Vinnie and Herbie.. two men not bound by bar lines.
Great
whos on bass cello?
How many of the really great drummers really establiesh themselves through their pulse/swing? I mean aside from comments and chops.
Cheer up Herbie!
What tune is this????????🤔🤔🤔🤔
Footprints by Wayne Shorter featured on his Adam's Apple album in 1967; Herbie on piano, Reginald Workman on bass and Joe Chambers on drums :)
Herbie is to me the premier jazz pianist. Brian excels and Vinnie of course great. But l miss Elvin & Tony.
Hancock never ceases to astonish...year after year..with sidemen who are determined to blow away anything around...
My dear lord vinnie sounds incredible here yikes!
I'd love to see tain watts in this format🤯
8:59 perfect rim knock got me like
3 players & 9 video/photographers
hey we know footprints cool
Is this really from 2019? Wow!! Herbie doesn't look more than 50 and he was 79 then.
Yeah true.... quite the opposite for vinnie though 🤣🤣
I don't care if he looks Gandolf the gray. Vinnie is a legend behind the set.

high tuned drums would sound more appropriate to me. to me . to ME.
Yeah I think so too for me, it might work a bit better for an outdoor venue like this, but still awesome regardless
Preference sir. Lol
Whole lotta people on that stage besides the musicians.
