It definitely is ironic. They created the system to put more emphasis on winning, and yet, there we were with a winless Newman in the final four. In the end, regardless of what system you put in place, consistency will always reign supreme.
Well, there's no denying that Robby Gordon's 1st Win in the 31 car at New Hampshire is the biggest accomplishment for that car... And Newman would have been the biggest Upset Champion in 2014 if he could've beat Harvick... But now, we'll have to see how things go with RCR now that it's in the era of the 3 and 8....
Fantastic documentary on the storied 31 team my man. Can’t help but think of 2003 when Robby Gordon swept the road courses that year. That was a great Memory for that car.
I'll just say this. I was told by a reliable source that as soon as Austin dillon got to the cup series most of rcrs money and talent went to that team so I'd say it was Richards fault
The Number 8 is originally from Dale Earnhardt inc. With Dale Earnhardt JR. When it had the Budweiser and other sponsorships with Mark Mark Martin and Eric Almora they should do a Retro style everytime
Ahh, the 31. without it, I would not be a NASCAR fan. from casual viewership in the early 2010s as a jeff burton fan, to a die hard watch every race newman fan since 2015, this video officially gave me ptsd.
The Late Great Dale Earnhardt Sr passed away 21 years ago and did Richard Childress Racing. So sad to see one of the great organization in Nascar crumbling apart.
Took a bad ass driver like Newman to put that 31 in victory lane. Newman is one of the best drivers out there, I've seen him do some insane things in the car.
I'd like to see the video on Elliot Sadler but I cant seem to find it. The fall of Yates racing had a very negative impact on his career. Though he moved to GEM it was because Yates was folding. The 38 team continued with very m a minimal success after 2005. Could you link the video if it still exists?
When you said RCR scaled back to a 3 car team in 2010, they already gained a 3rd car in 2005 with Dave Blaney in the #07 car, and the #07 would later be driven by Clint Bowyer, and the #07 would be changed to the #33, and it would be dropped by RCR in 2014 after 2 part time seasons from Austin Dillon.
Richard Childress is the Al Davis of NASCAR. He's stuck in the Earnhardt era and won't just trust the people he hires to go out and win. He has to force himself into every detail.
Can you do a misfortunate history of open wheel drivers not name Tony Stewart. I know Mario Andretti did win the Daytona 500 in 5he 60's I believe but besides Tony Stewart not much success over the years ( i.e. Danica, Christian Fettipadi, Sam Hornish, Dario Francetti, Al Ulser Jr.. etc.)
Mike Skinner was honestly done dirty. He came close the winning several times in 1999, and 2000, but it was the the #3 team that was Childress’s main focus. It was clear the the crew chief was the main factor in Skinners downfall because once Larry McReynolds retires, they took a turn for the worst. They came off 2 seasons where they finished top 12 in points, and then he only scored 1 top ten before he was released. Skinner’s career reminds me a lot of Steve Parks’s Career & both drivers are two of NASCAR’s biggest “What Could’ve Been” drivers
Jeff Burton was my favorite driver growing up, and Hemric was going to be my favorite driver going forward after following him in the lower series, so I was really excited when I found out that he was moving up to the same car Burton used to drive, even if it was renumbered. But in typical, modern day Nascar style, if you don't set the world on fire right away or bring sponsorship dollars, they won't even let you develop and release you at the drop of a hat. And lo and behold it happened to Hemric. You can't improve if they don't even give you a chance. One season is not enough. Nothing against Tyler Reddick, he's a good guy and a great driver. I just wish they didn't do Hemric dirty like that and gave him more time to develop. I wish Childress reopened the 31 as a third car with Reddick instead and he could've kept them both, but it always comes down to money...
Burton was my favorte driver ever! I have a diecast of almost every one of the schemes in this video! I always felt like his decline was more a product of RCR's decline in the 2010's. I'll always have a soft spot for that #31. Its a shame its no longer a full time team.
Robert Yates Racing #28. Can't get more misfortunate than having two drivers killed in separate crashes (Davey Allison; Kenny Irwin Jr.) and a near-miss in between with Ernie Irvan's near-fatal crash in Michigan from 1994.
From the numbers, I'm guessing you're talking about 1998, right? He was outside the top-20, not top-30, and he missed three races due to injury. Morgan Shepherd and Mike Dillon (Austin and Ty's dad) filled in for him. Additionally, competitive depth was much higher in the mid 90's compared to the mid 10's.
UPDATE: The #31 will remain at RCR as a part-time third team with another protege, Tyler Reddick, successfully making his Cup debut at the 2019 Daytona 500 while running the full Xfinity schedule in RCR's only full-time entry in that series...
Whaddya mean "A Misfortunate Legacy"? I gave this ol 31 car a legacy! I drove the Lowes Chevrolet before it was cool! I'm the 1995 NASCAR SuperTruck Series Inaugural Champion
RC hasn't won a championship as an owner since 94, Correct ? That's some rough stuff. I had seriously thought Kevin Harvick would've been able to win a championship under the RCR banner.
Also, here's some ideas for "cursed" numbers. #60 in Xfinity (obviously), #28 in Cup (Death of Davey Allison and near death of Ernie Irvan, and success at long last with Ricky Rudd), and #1 (Steve Park woes as well as Jaime Mac)
The #60 was only "cursed" last year. For 20 years, it was the most successful number in the series. On the Cup side, it's been winless since 1950! Actually every number in the 60's has been horrible for decades. The last time any of them won a race was Elmo Langley in the #64 in 1966. The #1 is definitely cursed, though. After Billy Wade won 4 races and finished fourth in points in 1964, nobody has won more than four times, or finished in the top ten in points with that number. The #28 had horrendous misfortune in back-to-back years, but overall it has one of the best records of all numbers.
I never even thought of it till now that you showed it. RCR is using Dale Earnhardt and Dale Jr's old numbers. Guess you gotta do anything you can to get sponsors when your team isn't that good.
Actually, RCR isn't using Dale Sr's number... Dale Sr. was using Richard Childress's number. Richard drove the #3 for his own team that he owned and Dale Sr. drove the #2 for Osterlund Racing. Won his 1st cup driving the #2. Then when Osterlund sold the team to JD Stacy, Dale Sr left the team and went to Bud Moores team where he drove the #15 wrangler car for a couple years. Then when Jr Johnson set it up for Dale Sr to drive for Childress, that's when he climbs into the #3. So, yeah, the #3 was Richard's b4 it was Dale's so it will always be Richard's # to use however he sees fit.
It is a definite possibility that Reddick will make his Cup Debut late in the season, but I think Childress will want to take the opportunity to do another big decision and bring back the #29 for Reddick's Cup Debut...
Somehow I forgot Neil Bonnett flipping at Talladega in 1993. So the misery started from the beginning for the 31 team.
