Yep, we here in PAL regions always got the shitty end of the stick and i'm not talking about 50Hz, i'm talking about the many game releases that sadly never made it to our regions due to Sega of Japan not thinking the west was gonna like or take to their games or just lazy publishers not bothering to publish a game for the sake of us getting it. I mean all those shooters that only U.S. and Japan got like Sagaia, Thunder Force III, M.u.s.h.a, Eliminate Down, Slap Fight MD, Sol-Deace etc. And it still shits me that we never got Columns III for the PAL Mega Drive, I know the U.S. barely got that game too, it was only because of Vic Tokai picking it up at the last minute and publishing it for the U.S. Genesis. The way it generally goes is, Japan goes first, U.S.A goes second and European PAL regions go last or not at all in many cases.
Robo Aleste has an "alternate history" story where ancient Japan received steam engine technology through a strange vessel that landed on their shores, allowing the construction of giant steam powered mechs that turned the already fierce territory war into a massive continent wide battleground.
Course one thing I am concerned about is whether I'll even be able to get on considering news I'm hearing of lack of Seaga CDs due to semiconductor shortages.
The Japanese release is looking awesome. I won't get my hopes up too high because of the translation issues, but if Shin Megami Tensei, Sorcerian, and King Colossus got official English releases, I would pay double the asking price for those games alone. Though if the North American version at least contains Snatcher and Dark Wizard, I'll still buy it. My dream picks for the Genesis Mini 2 would be the following: Sega CD: Snatcher, Dark Wizard, Shin Megami Tensei (English translation), Vay, Popful Mail, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Dungeons & Dragons - Eye of the Beholder, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Road Rash, Dune, The Secret of Monkey Island, Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Panic!, Heimdall, Dungeon Explorer, Arcus I-II-III (English translation), Fatal Fury Special, Final Fight CD, Shining Force CD, Shadowrun (English translation), Rise of the Dragon, Lords of Thunder, Heart of the Alien, and Death Bringer - The Knight of Darkness (English translation). Genesis: Phantasy Star II, Warsong, Shining Force II, Splatterhouse 3, Mystic Defender, Arcus Odyssey, Crusader of Centy, Exile, The Immortal, Shadowrun, Gain Ground, Sword of Vermilion, King Colossus (English translation), Rent-a-Hero (English translation), Master of Monsters, The Revenge of Shinobi, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, Herzog Zwei, El Viento, Valis III, Ranger-X, Sorcerian (English translation), Surging Aura (English translation), Weaponlord, and Ys III: Wanderers from Ys.
I read an interview with someone in a high leadership position of this Mini expressing surprise when reviewing what games to possibly add and seeing so much foreign support for Robo Aleste, as he only remembered it as super-frustrating, until he read that it had been rebalanced in the West to the point where he felt it was practically a completely different game. Could explain why they're including both JP and US versions, because while they want to tickle JP players nostalgia bones they do seem to view the western version as the one people would actually want to play. Funny how that works, sometimes.
I am surprised you are surprised by the presence of Shin Megami Tensei. It seemed a given considering ① the presence of CD titles ② Atlus now being part of Sega and ③ one of the two project leaders of the Mega Drive Mini project having joined Atlus in April. On the other hand, I agree Populous (and any EA title for that matter) is a huge surprise. I wonder if they managed to deal another EA title such as Desert Strike or Blockout.
I feel like this is probably a long shot due to licensing issues, but what I would most love to see on the US version is some of the better licensed games -- "X-Men 2: Clone Wars", one of the Spider-Man games, "Robocop versus Terminator", "The Terminator" (Sega CD), "Alien 3", or the "Animaniacs" games. There's also the best game on the Genesis, "True Lies" (only partially kidding -- it's an incredibly fun game). Those licensed games were a central part of the experience of being a Genesis owner at the time, and it would be great to get a few of them on the machine. Failing that, there are some quirky titles from later in the systems' lifespan that would be great additions: "Sub-Terrania", "Crusader of Centy", and "The Lost Vikings". We'll see what makes the cut!
Tbh if they released this in the west with line up of games but all translated, I'd be pretty stoked and they'd sell a lot of units. It's as if Sega fundamentally doesn't understand their fanbase, most of us are middle aged retro gamers, we're pretty open to Japanese game design by now.
Really looking forward to what will be on the US version. That list feels way behind, and I'm hoping we also get Lunars, Popful Mail, and of course, the mighty Snatcher. I'd be stoked if they traded some of the JP-specific titles for Vay and Keio flying Squadron...regardless, I have this on pre-order as well based on the strength of the announced titles for the US alone, and my enjoyment of the Genesis mini.
Calm down gigahype why you so hyped about a cashgrab system that you can play freely on retroarch or 3 or 4 different genesis emulators with more features at zero cost? What a clown🤡
I’ll say maybe 80 percent of what’s on the mega drive mini will be on the genesis mini but those really obscure Japanese titles will be replaced with something else (few have been already replaced from what was announced for the genesis mini). Lunar games have to be on the genesis mini it would be a huge shame if they weren’t. Since it seems like there will be 55 games on both minis and the final announcement for the mega drive mini games with probably be around the end of August, snatcher can be the last official game they announce for the mega drive mini. I’m assuming we’ll get most of the games announced for the genesis mini around the end of August as well
Another great and informative video!! I am excited to get this Mini console, and on a side note it is always great to see the continuing adventures of BADASS THE WARRIOR!!🤣🤣👍👍
I would KILL for them to finally give us the first re-release of Knuckles Chaotix on this; sure, it was a 32X game, but by extension and at its core, it's designed like a Genesis game.
I'd argue that some of these games are hitters. Ecco, Shin Megami Tensei, Phantasy Star 2, Viewpoint... I have PS2 and a port of Viewpoint for the Playstation in the long box. That game's actually mad fun.
That moment when I raise an eyebrow at the mention of King Colussus and then immediately recognise that you are playing music in the background from that game XD Probably it's best feature honestly. Nice how a lot of these are translated now but they won't end up on the western version unless Sega want to muck about with paying translators and all the legal shenanigans that tie into that.
If by some miracle the Western MD Mini 2 has a translated Shin Megami Tensei on it, I'll be there in a heartbeat! I've been wanting to play that game for years!
The issue with this device is that you are reaching the limit of the original machine. if you can't add Konami or Disney titles there are not so many great extra sega cd games in the end to add to it... They should have make this system a mega cd only and allow users to connect it to the genesis mini and combine both portfolio.
I’m happy we’re getting Final Fight CD; however, wish we got Keio Flying Squadron and Battle Mania Daiginjou. Yes I know there is a chance of it being jailbroken (I have the 2019 Genesis mini jailbroken.), but an official release would be nice.
I wish the Turbografx-16 would get an actual hack released.. apparently they jailbroke it within a few weeks of release but not to the point where they could actually release it.
Guilty as charge,I ignored Gain Ground for decades till the sega genesis collection on the switch, watching an old gamesack episode Dave convince me to play it… Now’s one of my favorites on the platform and whatever release I come across I’m playing it, like the arcade sega ages release on the switch
Aside from the three button platformer action games, there were so many Japan only games that never made it to localizations. Looking back, it almost makes sense because it might take 18 months and Sega was trying to put out a new system at least that quickly. Well I'm glad we eventually get fan translations in some cases. Yakuza 5 was one of the most recent big hits almost forgotten if not for a rerelease on PS4. It takes a good while to localize what is basically a movie and a book in one now days. This would never be feasible if the new system came every 2 years.
What interests me here is what will be found out when hackers get hold of the system. How the hardware itself differs from the Genesis Mini since we have sega CD titles and virtua racing in
Some of this japanese titles might get replaced with Quackshot, Crusader of Centi, Sword of Vermilion, High Seas Havoc, Earthworm Jim 2, Marvel Land, Boogerman, Pac-Attack, Pulseman and Rocket Knight Adventures.
Not a bad list there if most of those are included. It could turn out worse in the end, and a lot less likely better, but hopefully something as good if nothing else. The titles that came to the first Genesis Mini, had some unexpected inclusions, for better and for worse.
It's interesting that Sega opted for different third party developers and publishers this time round on the Mini 2 for Japan as opposed to the original one back in 2019. The Japanese Mini 2 has Game Arts, Taito, Toaplan and Namco onboard where as the first one had Disney and a few others that aren't featured here. So no more Mickey Mouse games in Japan at least. It's also starting to look a bit grim with this project by Sega going forward, there has been no more updates on the Genesis Mini 2 and certainly no news on any European Mini 2 showing up in the near future which leads me to believe there might not be one and as you said in the video, with so few units being made it's looking like this Mini 2 won't be available wordwide like the first one. I mean really? If Amazon is the only place you can pre-order this thing that is a bad sign already. I enjoyed all these updates Sega Lord X, as always your content rules!
Really a *big* shame that SEGA tries to cut corners on thr product, with the "straight from Japan" shipping issue with Amazon, and entirely ignoring every country outside of Japan and the US (especially excluding Europe and Canada) by even blocking imports from Amazon directly.
If it weren’t for the US market, Sega would not have done as well that generation. Brazil was big too. But in Japan it wasn’t as popular. Which has me confused why this release is favoring the Japanese market over everywhere else. I guess the answer is that Sega leadership in Japan has always made poor decisions.
@@nicholasbullock1709 That's what got Sega out of the hardware market. They laser-focused on Japan for the Saturn and Dreamcast, to the exclusion of all their other markets.
I was hoping to get one of these for my birthday, but I left it too long and missed out on pre-ordering both the Japanese AND American units! I hope they release a European variant and include Snatcher in the game lineup! I know there's a semiconductor shortage atm but I do hope they release this unit in Europe! I asked my parents if they could get me a Taito Egret Mini for my birthday, due to not being able to get a Mega Drive Mini 2, but they say that's too expensive! If I really do fail to get a Mega Drive Mini 2 and/or Snatcher isn't on the non-Japanese units, I can think of 2 other ways I could play Snatcher without breaking the bank: - learn just enough Japanese to be able to play the PC Engine Super CD version, which I have on my CoreGrafx Mini (being special needs, I don't know how easily I can!) - ask someone to burn me a CD-R duplicate of the PAL Mega CD release (not on the right side of legal, yes, and also, I don't know any serious retro collectors personally!)
@@SegaLordX February. Mega Drive Mini 2 will be FULLY available Internationally February 2nd. If you'd be so kind to give us a Moment, we can explain, especially how we KNOW this.
Hardware notes, the original Mega Mini didn't have enough internal space for many CD titles. You can beat that with a USB. This MAY have enough internal space, and a good emulator to be worth it if even as an Upgrade. Now I would hope for better 32X support, but that is not really a topic. Getting the 6-button controller automatically, and a vastly different, non repeated, lineup in USA has my interest peaked too. *if you order one, get the 2nd controller immediately* . Getting one after purchase is an annoying feat.
Mostly gamearts games so I wonder if Alisia Dragoon will be announced. Interesting seeing the copyrights and that m2 owns aleste. Compile and m2 are related and they made a couple of good mega cd games.
Aleste is pronounced 'alesta' - the story goes it's derived from the English term 'lighting arrester.' There's a Compile interview on shmuplations that explains the story. 'Tenka Fubu' was the motto of Oda Nobunaga, 16th century Japanese warlord and all-round video game fixture. The term transliterated means 'Beneath Heaven Spread War', which more figuratively translated has a meaning along the lines of 'Conquer the World By Martial Force.' So Tenka Fubu was basically Game Arts' take on Nobunaga's Ambition (and I'd bet the Game Arts connection is why it's here). Shin Megami Tensei's inclusion is cool, but I do know the Japanese press at the time were kind of down on this version compared to the Super Famicom one; general complaints were that it was slow and the atmosphere took a hit here. But I have a feeling they were just being nitpicky, they were way tougher critics than the Western press ever was. Shockingly, Mega CD Snatcher was never released in Japan, so while it would be a cool omake announcement for them to add it here, there's been no other Konami content for this and so I don't expect it. There has been Victor JVC stuff though, so that bodes quite well for Keiõ Flying Squadron. I think odds are also decent on After Armageddon Gaiden being one of the last CD titles, it was a late Sega published rpg for the platform in Japan. The final Mega CD game released anywhere was Compile's Japan-only VN style take on Shadowrun, which would be really cool to see, but the license obviously complicates that. The final CD title? You heard it here first, I'd bet my life on Yumimi Mix. Nobody in the West has ever heard of it, but it was a Game Arts title that was one of the most revered Mega Drive titles at the time. Since we know a deal was signed with Game Arts here, I would be floored if they left it out.
I pre ordered but Im waiting to see what the full release of games will be. At that point I will make the decision if I will go through with the purchase.
Another thing I'm wondering that I can't find confirmation on one way or another: are the "bonus titles" part of the final 50 game count or are they "extras" like how Darius and Tetris were for the first Genesis/Mega Drive Mini? Viewpoint being a "bonus title" for Japan since it never got released there, means it's possible that the fourth bonus title for the NA Genesis Mini 2 will be something else, as in, an import-friendly Japan-only release? Gley Lancer, Eliminate Down, even Twinkle Tale (that one has a story with Japanese text but it's not important to know, you just move and shoot). Probably raising my hopes too high with those but hope springs eternal!
Still waiting on updates for the North American version. That's probably the one I'll realistically be most able to get, and I don't know if the Japan version even allows you to play the western/English versions of these games like how the first MD Mini or even the TurboGrafx Mini allowed. But the 11 new games for Japan seem nice, hope we get Robo Aleste and the Sega CD Ecco too, along with the Lunar games and Popful Mail. The first NA Genesis Mini weeded out some trash like the Alex Kidd game (the Master System ones were the good ones, sorry), Altered Beast (hot take but yeah it was an iconic launch title over here but the game by itself is at best mediocre - the arcade version is slightly better I guess) or the Genesis port of Virtua Fighter 2 (lol), I'd like to see more titles that have been dormant for a while AND are good such as Rocket Knight Adventures, Ranger-X, etc. Zombies Ate My Neighbors would be very good especially considering the really bad "remaster" recently tossed on Steam and GOG. Please no Super Thunder Blade, Flicky (other mediocre at-best games that have been in every single Genesis compilation released for the past decade or more), or the FMV landfill from the Sega CD like Sewer Shark, Corpse Killer, Night Trap, Wirehead...for the love of God don't let the irony-poisoned dictate what Sega CD games make it for Americans!
I hope the Mega Drive mini 2 would be available for Europe. I would love to get my hands on playing Shining Force CD & the Lunar games. I hope Snatcher is unveiled for the system too.

I don't get why they release multiple types of these mini consoles with limited games on them. Just release one, have it hooked up to an online store with EVERY ROM available and charge a reasonable price for each ROM. Surely more profitable to do it that way, and everyone gets to play exactly the games they want, including games never released in certain regions. Could even include (which would in turn encourage people to make) some of the new Mega Drive drive games that are being made today. Essentially, these old games and consoles get a second lease on life.

Course one thing I am concerned about is whether I'll even be able to get on considering news I'm hearing of lack of Seaga CDs due to semiconductor shortages.
Sitting on the shiter watching Sega Lord.
As far I am keen of the original design. MD/SG reached its peak with the second iteration. Love it as well
The Japanese release is looking awesome. I won't get my hopes up too high because of the translation issues, but if Shin Megami Tensei, Sorcerian, and King Colossus got official English releases, I would pay double the asking price for those games alone. Though if the North American version at least contains Snatcher and Dark Wizard, I'll still buy it.
My dream picks for the Genesis Mini 2 would be the following:
Sega CD: Snatcher, Dark Wizard, Shin Megami Tensei (English translation), Vay, Popful Mail, Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Dungeons & Dragons - Eye of the Beholder, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Road Rash, Dune, The Secret of Monkey Island, Earthworm Jim Special Edition, Panic!, Heimdall, Dungeon Explorer, Arcus I-II-III (English translation), Fatal Fury Special, Final Fight CD, Shining Force CD, Shadowrun (English translation), Rise of the Dragon, Lords of Thunder, Heart of the Alien, and Death Bringer - The Knight of Darkness (English translation).
Genesis: Phantasy Star II, Warsong, Shining Force II, Splatterhouse 3, Mystic Defender, Arcus Odyssey, Crusader of Centy, Exile, The Immortal, Shadowrun, Gain Ground, Sword of Vermilion, King Colossus (English translation), Rent-a-Hero (English translation), Master of Monsters, The Revenge of Shinobi, Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, Herzog Zwei, El Viento, Valis III, Ranger-X, Sorcerian (English translation), Surging Aura (English translation), Weaponlord, and Ys III: Wanderers from Ys.
Hey Sega, we want a US release update please.
I was already heavily considering getting this, but Ecco CD, SMT and an easy mode for PS2 sold this for me.
SMT wasn't a series that was big for Sega consoles, though. They usually came from another platform and were typically more popular there as well.
This update is appreciated but the question remains: Snatcher when?
When the japanese dude said "Splatterhouse" I just thought "Hentei" and continued to piss myself laughing.
What a clown🤡
you know you can just hack it like the sega and snes/nes mini and then load whatever game you like.
Haha. Glad you enjoyed it!
Keio flying squadron and ill buy it.
I would KILL for them to finally give us the first re-release of Knuckles Chaotix on this; sure, it was a 32X game, but by extension and at its core, it's designed like a Genesis game.
Lunar series is a must.
I'd argue that some of these games are hitters. Ecco, Shin Megami Tensei, Phantasy Star 2, Viewpoint...
I have PS2 and a port of Viewpoint for the Playstation in the long box. That game's actually mad fun.
That moment when I raise an eyebrow at the mention of King Colussus and then immediately recognise that you are playing music in the background from that game XD
Probably it's best feature honestly. Nice how a lot of these are translated now but they won't end up on the western version unless Sega want to muck about with paying translators and all the legal shenanigans that tie into that.
I was hoping that this would have had Eternal champions challenge from the dark side😔
If by some miracle the Western MD Mini 2 has a translated Shin Megami Tensei on it, I'll be there in a heartbeat! I've been wanting to play that game for years!
Personally I only like about some 30 to 40% of the announced games so far.
I'm really hoping either regional version will get Crusader of Centy and Light Crusader!
The music from both those games is a really big mood!
sega needs to call Capcom and they need to get this Dreamcast mini going, cut it out!
Also, Viewpoint is suppose to have some sort of 'overclock' mode that will reduce the slowdown.
Guilty as charge,I ignored Gain Ground for decades till the sega genesis collection on the switch, watching an old gamesack episode Dave convince me to play it… Now’s one of my favorites on the platform and whatever release I come across I’m playing it, like the arcade sega ages release on the switch
We definitely DO NOT need a Greendog hack! 😂🤣
My Lord you are awesome
LOVED view point as a kid
*I can't wait for unit to come out and love getting Final Fight and Ninja Warriors free* ⭐️
Man I just hope Lunar makes it over to the Genesis mini 2. If so that’s worth the price and everything else is just gravy.
Love the videos X
With the line up of games and the difficulties obtaining one a lot of people will give this a pass.
😆
If it weren’t for the US market, Sega would not have done as well that generation. Brazil was big too. But in Japan it wasn’t as popular. Which has me confused why this release is favoring the Japanese market over everywhere else. I guess the answer is that Sega leadership in Japan has always made poor decisions.
@@nicholasbullock1709 That's what got Sega out of the hardware market. They laser-focused on Japan for the Saturn and Dreamcast, to the exclusion of all their other markets.
Blah blah blah!!!
No snatcher no buy
Have a cookie instead. 🍪
Lol I couldn't believe when I learned a few months back that populous was actually released for the dmg game boy.. so strange.
I think it was on pretty much everything at the time.
@@SegaLordX I played populous on my Sega Master System and I loved it.
SEGA CD stuff is a must have, SNATCHER and Dark Wizard would be amazing for a US release
If I really do fail to get a Mega Drive Mini 2 and/or Snatcher isn't on the non-Japanese units, I can think of 2 other ways I could play Snatcher without breaking the bank:
- learn just enough Japanese to be able to play the PC Engine Super CD version, which I have on my CoreGrafx Mini (being special needs, I don't know how easily I can!)
- ask someone to burn me a CD-R duplicate of the PAL Mega CD release (not on the right side of legal, yes, and also, I don't know any serious retro collectors personally!)
Can we please get Snatcher on this? Please?
Wild how there's no mega drive mini 2 in the UK even though mega drive and master system was huge here
Sega may just be staggering the releases. There’s still hope for a European model.
@@SegaLordX February. Mega Drive Mini 2 will be FULLY available Internationally February 2nd. If you'd be so kind to give us a Moment, we can explain, especially how we KNOW this.
Will consider picking it up , if I can find one
I would love to get sorcerian on the Genesis with its killer falcom soundtrack! curious to see what the next batch of Genesis will be.
Populous?!?!
Gain Ground was one I added immediately to my Mega Mini 1
Gain Ground is one of my top ten games of all time. I adore it, MD version specifically.
You are the man ! SEGA forever
It's a unexpected list of games. This is not what I imagine for a Mini 2.
I'd rather have unexpected than games I've already played more than a hundred times lol
Sword of Centy hopefully is on the USA release.
Getting one after purchase is an annoying feat.
the best emulator awhile back was gens it played genesis/32x/Sega CD flawlessly
@@raymxslappedyall1891 specific and literal question: Does it play Kolibri without crashing?
@@fearanarchy what?
Hearing Phantasy Star 2 was enough for me.
Gotta love that over the top Japanese announcer.
Only 1 more game announcement left, no snatcher no money
No Euro/UK release is ridiculous if true.
I hope that Gleylancer appears in the final batch of games.
日本ではビューポイントがGenesisでは発売されませんでした、期待してる方が多いです👍✨
I want to play SMT and lunar so I got that pre order in. But, I getting worried the USA version won’t have some of this titles.
9:05 I have the Master System version, had good fun with it, no Amiga at the time
How do we know there are only 20 Sega CD games in total? I don't think I saw that listed anywhere.
Its modern Sega we're talking about. I have no doubt they will screw this up somehow.
I know that they won't!! SEGA never let me down ever!! SEGA FOREVER!!!
I'm really excited for this Mega Drive mini 2! Wish I had the money to import one.
Blood plasma for Sega?
I hope the Mega Drive mini 2 would be available for Europe. I would love to get my hands on playing Shining Force CD & the Lunar games. I hope Snatcher is unveiled for the system too.
Hey sega lord love you vids. Please answer a question for me..can I not use a elgoto av capture card to capture genesis/cd footage???? Please help
Yes you can. You will need something to get the Genesis RGB video to HDMI, however. Look at the Retrotink line of products to help.
Ok thanks so much for the quick response. I'm going to just get the HD capture card soon..I am starting a RUclips channel.findings things sux lol.i have watched u an a few others for a couple years..I might try the vcr method just to finish this video...thanks again sega lord
I want that now, never had a mega drive II
Just wondering- isn't the first genesis mini's hardware also capable of playing sega cd games, correct?
A hacked one can play them, yes.
I'm ok with most of those Japanese Sega CD titles getting replaced on the U.S. Genesis mini...increases the chances that we get Snatcher over here.
Let's hope so.
