    $50,000 KING LOUIE OPEN
King Louie West Lanes Kansas City, Kan., Feb 8-12, 1972
    Laub: One For The Money
Larry Laub set a national television scoring record as he won the $50,000 King Louie Open over Max Jensen in Kansas City. Laub won four games with an aggregate score of 1021 pins, including a 238-237 championship win over Jensen, to break the old four-game record of 1004 pins.
Only one pin separated the duo through the fifth frame; then Laub went into his patented finish . . . a string of strikes into the ninth frame, and he had to wait until Jensen, a former football player, finished his game. Jensen got five in a row and sat down with a 237. Laub was forced to spare, then strike to win, and that is exactly what he did . . . to win it by one pin. He averaged 231 pins per game during the tournament, which saw Skee Foremsky, Johnny Guenther and Palmer Fallgren record perfect games.
    TELEVISED FINALS
    Pos. Name, City/State Total Amount
1 Larry Laub, San Francisco, Calif. 1021 (4 games) $6,000
    2 Max Jensen, Lincoln, Neb. 237 (1 game) 3,500
3 Barry Asher, Costa Mesa, Calif. 245 (1 game) 2,000
    4 Palmer Fallgren, Sacramento, Calif. 197 (1 game) 1,800
    5 Paul Colwell, Tucson, Ariz. 204 (1 game) 1,600
PLAYOFF RESULTS-Laub defeated Colwell, 280-204; Laub defeated Fallgren, 233-197; Laub defeated Asher, 270-245; and in the championship game, Laub defeated Jensen, 238-237.

Watched this match live on PBT at the age of 16.
Had never heard of Max Jensen and chuckled at the size of the dude, but by the end of the match I was rooting for him.
One of the single best matches I ever saw televised.
Spoke with Les Zikes of the PBA in a pro am years later and I brought up Max Jensen.
He spoke very highly of him and it seemed the rest of the PBA held him in high regard.
It’s a shame he never appeared on TV again.

Larry Laub was a solid professional for many years. What a great four-game series and a fantastic last ball. Kudos to Max Jensen. He bowled great for a first appearance in the finals.

Whoever you are Max Jensen, you put on a fun show. Too bad we didn't get to see more.

As a former score keeper for the King Louie Open, what a great memory. My scorekeeping began just a few years after this tournament.

A small correction, with regard to the location. King Louie West was in Overland Park, not Kansas City, Kansas. The shell of the establishment, empty since 2009, is right down the street from my house.

+Gene Davis right-o...went away just like Metcalf South Mall...all the King Louie's are gone and not much left...had our senior party for high school...shame!

The Jenson-Laub match, which I had never seen, must be one of the greatest ever. What a game. What ever happened to Jenson?
    Thanks for posting this.

For those of you who wanted to know about Max Jensen, he was a great, colorful bowler, but sadly he passed away with cancer at a young age. He passed away in the late 80's

+Janie Perry: I thought it was 1990 but you may be correct. My Dad knew him well and he was our mail carrier for a while in our area. I used to buy my bowling balls from him when he had his pro shop on N. 48th. St. & give me a few suggestions when I was practicing. His Son Eric still carries for the USPS and is an excellent bowler.

Sorry to hear this. What would have happened if he had won the '72 tournament?

What a serious bummer, I have long wondered what happened to him. Thank you for sharing that info. Rest In Peace, Max Jensen.

      Max Jenson 1940-1990.
      Died of cancer I believe.

I also believe that Max either started or was one of the first coaches of the University of Nebraska bowling teams.

I remember watching this on TV back in '72, and long thought this was lost to history. AFAIK Max Jensen was the only one to put a guide arrow on top of his shoe.

Larry Laub was on fire on that day, but Barry Asher is my favorite and for good reason. Listen to Billy Welu's commentary on Barry's footwork. Barry was a real mechanic concerning the game. Rather than the equipment being responsible for a high score, in these days it was the acquired skill of the bowler... and Barry had it in spades.

Barry Asher- Great bowler- a little too temperamental back in the day. I think talent wise he was off the charts. Knew him as a kid. Liked him a lot.

“He put a little less crank on the ball so it didn’t hit as hard” says Billy Welu as Max snaps out the 10 instead of leaving a solid one. Yeah whatever, Billy…

his was one of the greatest matches of all time. Had Mr. Jenson won, I wonder if bowling history would have changed- could he have predated Roth?
