Another great video as usual it delivers awesome shots all round and a great area to capture by the looks.
Thanks for taking the time to watch! Happy to hear you enjoyed it. Definitely a beautiful area, highly recommend giving a visit when you can.
Man, I’m glad RUclips recommended your channel to me. You have my favorite color grading style that I’ve seen on the internet. I’m pretty new to color grading (& really suck at it at the moment) so it’s cool to see something to strive for.
Wow, thank you so much for the kind words, I am soooooo pumped to hear that! Appreciate you watching, lots more on the way. 👊
Maaannnnn another banger video with incredible photos! Love that you're open and even show the photos that are "bad", seriously can't wait for this book to see your work in person!!
Dude thank you! Cool to hear that feedback, I definitely don’t just nail every frame ever 🤣. Appreciate you!
This video style in a story-telling manner is just a very pleasant art. Every time I get an aesthetic enjoyment boost. And I love Washington State and haven't explored much of it, so I strongly appreciate looking at it through your eyes, especially at the moody shots (although it is hard to find something not moody in Washington, haha). Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thank you so much for the compliment. Can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time to watch and give that feedback! Washington definitely has some beautiful scenery in just about every season. More from a different area of WA in the next one 🙏

I’m glad you found it enjoyable! I appreciate that.
So good. I’ve had a roll of Gold 200 in my Mamiya Super for a couple of weeks, but have been too nervous to shoot “the right thing” that I haven’t shot anything. This is just what I needed to get out next week and finish a roll to start learning.
Love to hear that! Cool that you have the same camera, it’s such a fun little box haha. Gold 200 is a great stock, shot it in Arizona in another video a while back and I was pretty surprised how much I liked it. Happy shooting 🤘

DUUUUUUDE. Bring that smoke once again friend! 😀
Woot wooooot 😂🫡
Great footage, I’ll have to watch this again on my TV. I see where you were going with the waterfall image, funny thing about composition I learned when I started to paint is that the details, such as the logs piling up at the base of the frame kind of redirect the composition. Ultimately I would paint a combination of the two images from a slightly, and impractical to photograph from angle-and it is that image, that as a photographer, I would fantasize about going back to shoot a higher vantage point. Finally accepting what I cannot change, because either image is beautiful. I love the red leaves… I wonder how much iron oxide red I have on hand.
Thank you for the kind words, it's cool to hear your perspective as a painter and how you think through a scene like that. Appreciate you sharing your insight!
Your reaction at 6:43 is so relatable
Haha! Glad you can relate. Feels like we wait an eternity sometimes for conditions like that, hard not to get excited 👊
You're selling any color grading LOGS? This is so beautiful, I'm speechless, this just fueled my passion for Photography again

Can you please make a video how to develop and scan film at home? What chemicals to use, how long to develop etc.
Just found your channel, and I love it. I’m still new to film photography and making videos around it, and this has inspired me. I’ve realized just how big of a difference color grading can make, and yours is amazing. Definitely going to work on it and try to put my spin on things like you have. Amazing video and photos man. really liked it!
do you have any separate video about your developing process? im also into film and I'm thinking about starting developing my own rolls too.
amazing content again, keep it up 💪
Hey thanks so much! I don’t, but I could maybe do that at some point. I’ll throw it in the hat, haha. Developing is super fun and not difficult once you do it a few times, I’d highly recommended it!
@@DylanSpitz Will be waiting for that video! I'm new to film photography as well and would want to save $$$ on the developing and digitizing.😁
Dylan, colors are outstanding! What you think about Fuji film simulation? Maybe custom recipes? Maybe some of your favorites?
Hey, thank you! I actually just shoot raw when I use digital cameras. I know the simulations are popular and fun for a lot of people, they just don't really mesh well with my workflow.
@@DylanSpitz are you postprocess your digital footage? video? cause your film portra 800 looks exactly same as video... It's just reminds me something like Kodak Vision3 250-500D, or maybe Cinestill 800T, or in my tiny universe Classic Chrome, edited Fuji ;-)
@BadlonMondo ah thanks! Yeah I do, everything is shot in Log and graded in resolve
This takes me back home. 🍻

Really kind of you, thanks so much 🤘
Great shots; looked like a sick trip. No strap on the camera is crazy though 😓 did you have to use a tripod for the gas station shots? if not, any chance you remember the lowest shutter speed you shot at?
Thanks! It was a fun one for sure. I shot them handheld at 1/60. Risky business haha
Grate colour grading! do your own luts I would love to have one! Thanks for sharing the process
Thanks so much! I don’t, but I might be working on something 👀
Absolutely beautiful content and production, I would love to see the post production process of achieving such grading and quality, please consider making a rough video about it we would appreciate!

Keep it up Dylan inspiring us to get out there and shoot! About to finish my first roll on the ae1! Literally have no idea what I'm doing hardly lol. Appreciate the video and tips in these masterpieces. Saving up for an A7Cii!
Haha, that’s awesome! Thanks, Brock. Don’t worry, we all felt like that our first 5-10 rolls. Means a lot that you enjoy these videos, I appreciate you and the support!
Fascinating video (and photos!) so if I understand you correctly, you scan the film with a digital camera and macro lens, import that negative into Lightroom and edit it the way you want from there? That’s pretty cool. Do you ever send in your film to be processed or do you do it all yourself?
Yep! I do it all myself, developing is honestly pretty easy, saves money and you avoid the wait 👍
@@DylanSpitzI ask this in the most respectful way…what do you like about film cameras versus digital if you still scan the film digitally at the end? I would love to know your opinion. I know a lot of others share your love of film cameras. Is it all in the shooting process or is there a specific look that you like? Thanks for your time!
The process is undeniably more fun and intentional for me. Going all day without looking at a screen is refreshing for the soul sometimes. The results can be cool and interesting as well, but I definitely do it for the process.
@@DylanSpitz thanks for the detailed explanation…I would like to try it myself and this channel (yourself) makes a great case for it!
Wonderful video, beautiful colors! I was curious: are you using an anamorphic lens at all or is the letterbox-style format implemented in post-production?
Thank you! I shoot with the markers on in camera so I can frame everything in that aspect ratio, then add the letterbox in post to match it.
so no anamorphic (yet?) lol
Top tier material⚡
Ah thank you so much!
You should definitely try Fuji c200 pushed to 3200, really recommend it as a cheaper alternative.
I've tried portra 400, 800, Natura 1600. Natura's grain. are. quite big, portra and c200 are much smoottther. if you want predictibility go for portra, if want a cheeaper versiion try Fuji c200
Never thought to try that - thanks for the idea!
Your videos are amazing
Thank you so much 😀
Thank you youtube for this recommendation 👌
Appreciate you watching!
First shot of gas station is incredible
Really appreciate that, thank you!
That gas station is awsome.
Such a scene 💥
Great photos as always! I'm curious, how do you like that skier box for scanning, looking at switching my scanning setup as i find I get a lot of light leaks and flares out of my negative supply gear.
I actually really like it. Before this, I tried using a Kaiser light table because everyone recommended it and I had weird grid patterned and uneven light. The skier box has been a joy.
Beautiful stuff, new sub!! yay yay!!
Hey thank you! Happy to hear that 🤘
Nice work 👏 You likely answered this in other videos but I'm relatively new to the channel, do you normally photograph using Autofocus or manual focus? 🤔
All of my film cameras are fully manual, so no autofocus there. For digital images I usually am using single point AF, unless I'm tracking a moving subject (I'll use AF-C for that). 👍
@@DylanSpitz Nice! Thanks for the reply, I have a few vintage lenses I'd like to use for photography but wasn't sure how reasonable it was to use manual focus (for video I manually pull focus but for some reason I wasn't sure with photography lol I figure it depends on if it's street, architecture, or an event etc 😄
Hey Dylan, You said you set your IS0 to 400 for the portra 800. Did you let the lab know you pulled the film? or did you just let them develop it at box speed (800)? Turned out great!
Thanks! I actually develop and scan everything at home! But no, I wouldn’t tell the lab anything. The purpose of rating it at 400 for me is to purposely overexpose by about 1 stop. To me that’s when the portra films really perform their best and have cleaner shadows.
Great video and great content! You shot 800 @ 400, correct? Did you process for ISO 400?
Thank you! That’s correct, however, I just process at box speed. The point of me shooting at 400 is so everything is overexposed by a stop. Hope that makes sense!
@@DylanSpitz Gotcha. No pulling. Thanks!
New sub from me - lovely, ethereal, aesthetics from you all the way through this video! I do have to buck the trend though and ask what camera bag is in this and which North Face jacket it is you're wearing? I love orange and black combos!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you subscribing. The bag is one I’ve had for years from lowepro, there’s actually a link to it in the description of my latest video that came out yesterday. The north face jacket is a rain shell that I snagged at REI!
@DylanSpitz thanks so much for replying. I think I may have found the jacket but it's taken half of the internet/reddit to help me! Is it the North Face Venture?
Looks like it!
great quality! Thanks for sharing. Maybe a really stupid question but i have no experience with shooting film. Are those film shots edited afterwards after converting the negative? or is that the result after processing the film only? Keep up the nice vids :)
Hey, thank you! Not a stupid question at all, I had the same confusion when I was first starting out. All the negatives are scanned and dialed in with controls similar to what's found on traditional lab scanners, such as color balance, contrast, brightness, exposure, saturation, etc. as I convert them in the software. Basically, by doing it yourself, you're able to make those decisions rather than a lab technician doing what they feel is best. You can of course then edit them past that however much you'd like after making a .tiff copy in Lightroom if you wish. I find I pretty much never use anything past the negative lab pro controls while converting - it kind of gives me a creative boundary to work within which I enjoy. Hope that makes sense!
do you have any color grading tutorials? this is amazing
Hey, thank you so much! I do not right now...but you never know what's in the pipeline. 👀
You mentioned over exposing by a stop at the start. Do usually prefer to expose Portra 800 at box speed?
I always rate it at 400! I find that generally gives me the best results.
@DylanSpitz cheers mate! I've been a photographer for 20 years but haven't touched film since highschool. Absolutely loving it.
I've been eating portra a stop over but occasionally it seems to go too far over. In camera metre might be playing tricks or metering for the shadows too much
Nice video
Thanks!
Music from the 4:30 mark?
Everything after the intro montage is from Epidemic Sound. At this point though I couldn’t tell you the name or artist, you’d have the same shot at finding it as I would 😅

Hi Dylan!
Do you use Spot or average measuring most of the time?
Did you use any blue filter on the last shot of the gas station?
Hey there! Usually spot, metering for shadow detail. Nope, no filters!
cool video!!😊
Thanks! 😊
Beautiful. When I shoot on Portra 800 lighting comes out red😭
Thanks! Oh no, that sounds odd?
editing tutorial when?!
I was wondering where you were until now
Mystery solved, haha!
Great job on the video, only critique would be to move away from the lofi soundtrack. I'm seeing it used on almost every video on photography!
Thanks for watching. I do what I can, I write the intro song for all my videos myself even. The reason people (myself included) use a lot from that genre is because it’s one of the few that mesh well with speaking over it for extended periods of time. That or folk acoustic and that genre isn’t for me.
I did enjoy the intro song. Well done! Totally understandable about the loft music bed good for talking. @@DylanSpitz
What’s considered a good but not too expensive price for film stocks?
I think that’s pretty subjective, really. I’m not THAT unhappy with current prices, given the principles of supply and demand and economics. The way I look at it - shooting film is absolutely an unnecessary expense. And as with all unnecessary or entertainment-based expenses, you justify the price up to your own limits. Do I want it to keep going up? No, lol.
@@DylanSpitz ok cool thanks! Just wondering also are there any film cameras around that are no more than $200 in new condition?
Is the benefit of developing the film yourself a cost saving measure? just fun? Maybe both?
A bit of both for sure. One of the biggest reasons I do it is to save the annoying 2 week wait time between shooting something and getting the scans back. Often times I'll get home from a trip and develop and scan the images the next day.
@@DylanSpitz Got it!
I've spent quite a bit of time in the areas you've captured and you've done such a wonderful job capturing each one.
You've actually inspired me to try to pick up a Fuji x100vi as a first camera (emphasis on try). Seems like such a great compact camera for an active lifestyle.
