- Welcome to THE GREEK ISLANDS! Our final day on board the Galileo, starting with the capital of the cyclades! Feeling much less like an island and more like a city, we sat on the waterfront, explored the public beaches and Matt became a local. We had a captains dinner and sailed over night to the Pistachio island!!!! We obviously had to buy and try as many Pistachio products as we could before heading back to Athens. What an amazing week we have had exploring the Cycladic islands!!

Pistachio tree came to Greece from Persia after Alexander the Great campain in Asia. In Aegina Island is cultivated since 1896. What makes it special in that Island is the arid enviroment, poor limestone soil and close proximity to sea, that gives a special taste to it. Unfortunately you missed the Temple of Aphaia which is the most important Archeological site in the island, a mythical place .

Hermoupoli, the capital of Syros at the early of 19th century , was among the most important harbours in Mediterranean sea. One of the reasons is that there was located and still exists " Neorion Shipyard ", the second one in dynamic after Elefsis Shipyard in Greece.
(If you see the map of Greece you'll realise that Syros is on the center of Aegean and its strategical position to all the sea routes around Greece ,makes the Shipyard from the 19th cent. important). In the center of city there are beautiful very old houses from that period, which metaphorical " transfers" you in that period of time.
On the island there is a strong Catholic cociety as well an Orthodox too. The church on the left side of the hill's is Catholic one and at the right place Orthodox.
At the end in Hermoupoli are located two universities the first one is for industrial design and the other one is a Merchant Naval Academy .

I grew up on syros and moved back last week. I feel at home here
Syros is a rather small island but it has the capital, Ermoupoli, because it's right in the middle of Cyclades and has a very deep and safe harbor which was very important for the Greek ship owners and captains. There are wonderful beaches out of the main town. Also, they produce famous lucumi (or loukoumi) which is a traditional sweet.

Syros is a very vibrant and active island. First of all it has the second largest shipyards in all of Greece also home town of one of the largest composers of traditional Greek music. These islands aren't touristy and they are some of the best places for all walletd.
Guys if you go to Tinos don't hesitate to contact me. I got relatives from there and I can point out to you the best places to visit. There is one church in particular in the North of the island to village Ano Ysternia which is a must to visit and see. It's St. Catherine with great view from its alley all over to the Aegean Ses and a fabulous complete carved marble interior with exquisite sculptures. Also to the next village in Pyrgos you should visit the home - museum of the greatest sculpture of modern times of Greece Giannoulis Xalepas.

Ermoupoli: Ermis + polis. Polis means city in Greek and Ermis is the ancient Olympian God of commerce and messenger of the Gods (Hermes). So it's the city of Hermes.

Guys don't eat all the time Pita with Gyro. It's not what Greeks regularly eat. Try local dishes. Greece has hundreds of hundreds of different dishes. Each place has its own cuisine.
