I’ve heard Tommy play this lovely song several times, and on each occasion he has put a different spin on it - thereby giving the audience a unique version. He always plays that guitar with a passion, a smile on his face, and a total commitment to his craft. What a wonderful musician - it’s no surprise that he is loved the world over.
The most AMAZING THING, I find about Tommy's playing is his incredible wandering consciousness between: Eyes closed and head swaying in blissful rapport with the mood and harmonies he is playing in those truly special sections; The complete physical relaxation which allows him to swivel about in his chair to gaze at passers-by or smile and wink at some audience member, all whilst his two hands keep playing of their own accord; Pass through a minor minor note fluff without the slightest anxiety showing; Drop into some wild dexterously aggressive licks with open eyes but only partly engaged on his left hand to execute some incredibly difficult licks; Be a comedic smartarse to proudly show off something total out of the norm; Move his whole body flowingly in time to some joyously syncopated section of the song; Look up to the heavens for several bars or more as if that's where he's in tune with;
I attended a Tommy Emmanuel workshop a couple years ago and he said that he is a drummer playing the guitar and keeps time by nodding his head right and left.
@@ppesch1 Yeah, for sure. But there is more to keeping time than head bobbing. Some times (when sitting or standing) he is foot tapping. But the head SWAYING we see above is more melodic and modal than purely rythmic.
All of that. Yes, he's always moving. He is the music. That's what sets him apart from so many other amazing guitarists. There is simply something magical about the way Tommy plays. It's a very emotive experience watching him.
