I am in process switching form Wahoo to Garmin 840. I use Strava premium. I dont see Strava rides that were recorded on Wahoo Roam in my Garmin Connect feed. Is that my fault or a limitation?
these group ride features seem cool and all, but i really don’t think they'd be usable unless they're intuitive & require little to no effort. the current group track features don’t work easily; i tried to have my mom show up on my map, and despite her being one of my garmin connections and us both having live track enabled we couldn't see each other on our maps. if garmin requires people to be connections, have live track and group track enabled, have the route running, and have a consistent phone connection, i don’t think it would come up. i have borrowed a wahoo from a family member and was pleasantly surprised to see other wahoo users on the map despite me not initiating anything, having the route running, or being "friends" with them in any way
Not everyone rides with a Garmin unit etc., so I'm not certain the group ride features will be well utiised. I wish the Garmin had the same capability of phone function as in an Apple watch, but inclusive of Ride share capability
I've never used it. And yes, there are other brands out on the market. Half of people I know use Wahoo, the others Garmin, fewer use Bryton or other brands. But I noticed that Wahoo has a better capability of showing cyclists on a map, as it shows all that have enabled their visibility on a map, and not like in Garmin where you have to choose riders/friends from your connection list. In Wahoo you do not have to have any of them in your connection list of any sort. For many there may be too much hassle and bothering in adding/finding people in Garmin Connect, and also some may not use GC as such.
I loved my 705 Edge. I traded it on on a 1040 thru Garmin. What a waste. Calories measure at 40% accuracy. When adding manually the calories are correct. WTF!! The vertical mapping is always off by up to a quarter mile. On vertical. I live in the Midwest and we may have 80 feet of total relief in my county. Also ride in Florida a lot where there is zero relief. The 705 allowed gradation of 25 feet. The 1040 is only 100 feet or a flat asses line where I live. The 705 allowed both horizontal and vertical independent adjustment on the vertical screen not the 1040. I wish I could get my 705 back. This is the last Garmin I'll ever buy, Sadly!!!

The way I see it - for the 1050 you pay around 250 to 300 euro more for a better screen, while the 1040 already has a screen which is more than good enough. I think the price difference with the 1040 is way too big.
As someone with the 1040 solar it's not worth it for me. Sure the crisper screen is nice but with such a large display already I can clearly see 5-6 fields at any time. Again the speaker is nice, but a beep which tells me to glance at the screen is preferable to a voice giving me directions. I'll take the extra 10h of batter life, the current mount placement and the solar charging over any of the new features.

I am not seeing the share on my 840, does there need to be another edge nearby for it to show up, I am on the latest firmware.
You need to be on the latest beta firmware after enrolling on the program.
Is reporting hazards count from the point you first touched the right category or when submitting it? Waze invented to work precisely marking the point from where you first touched it. It can lead to misunderstandings otherwise.
Oh, and do you have to have a route loaded or works in free ride aswell?
From first touch.
I hope road hazard support also comes to the fenix lineup..
No.4 will be my favourite:)
Might just wait for the 1060 in 2 months time.
Amy news on this Beta coming available on Edge Explore 2 yet? I'm already signed up to the beta program
I am in process switching form Wahoo to Garmin 840. I use Strava premium. I dont see Strava rides that were recorded on Wahoo Roam in my Garmin Connect feed. Is that my fault or a limitation?
Limitation. You have to export your Strava data and import them into Garmin Connect. I did the same recently, and it was a hassle, but worth it.
@@hooked3841 Thanks for the reply. Can you "batch" process all the rides so it doesn't take forever?
@@brianbrackemyre5704 you can use a thirdparty tool like tapiriik to auto sync (incl old activities).
Will Garmin bring sharing to the forerunner series? I’d love to be able to share workouts I’ve created with my running group
how about Garmin Edge 1030 Plus? Must be the one just before 1040?
these group ride features seem cool and all, but i really don’t think they'd be usable unless they're intuitive & require little to no effort. the current group track features don’t work easily; i tried to have my mom show up on my map, and despite her being one of my garmin connections and us both having live track enabled we couldn't see each other on our maps.
if garmin requires people to be connections, have live track and group track enabled, have the route running, and have a consistent phone connection, i don’t think it would come up.
i have borrowed a wahoo from a family member and was pleasantly surprised to see other wahoo users on the map despite me not initiating anything, having the route running, or being "friends" with them in any way
Not everyone rides with a Garmin unit etc., so I'm not certain the group ride features will be well utiised.
Is the Beta programme only available to US users? I cant seem to see the option to sign up?
Nope, anyone. On Garmin Connect web, you’ll see the option after choosing your device (upper right icon)
How do you "unreport" a road hazard, or will they stay on the map forever?
Basically you can tap it, and say no longer there. As long as 50% of the reports say it’s not there, it’ll go away.
Great news. Looks like I will try thr Edge 1040 now that it's discounted. Finding the mixed Wahoo (Roam v2)/Garmin (Epix) ecosystems to be confusing as anything recorded in Wahoo needs to be manually added into Garmin.
Thanks as always Ray.
Just to be clear - the Edge 1040 isn't discontinued at all. :) Garmin says they'll keep adding new features to it, and keep it as part of the lineup.
@@Dcrainmakerhe wrote “discounted” not discontinued.
@@Dcrainmaker I saw that many online offers are $100 off normal price
@@jimpeyton1459 Yeah, all part of the normal Fathers Day sales that happen each year, and of course a bit tied to increasing sales before the Edge 1050. But otherwise, business as normal. Garmin says the Edge 1040 will remain a key part of their lineup for longer-battery life needs.
will the garmin share be compatibile with old sharing on edge x30?
Sadly not
Auto brightness has never worked for me when riding in the dark. Does anyone else have this problem ? It’ll dim to a point where I can’t read the data anymore.
Will the xx40 devices get the same home screen with the update as the new xx50 devices?
No, they don’t have the processing power for it.
Does upgrading from 830 to 840 makes sense? I use powermeter and ride around 200km a week
No
@@erwinretamales7211Yes. Definitely no
@@erwinretamales7211 why no
How can one install/use e.g. OSM maps on the 1040 / 1050 as it has no sd slot.
It has 64GB of storage, and a USB-C port. No need for SD cards anymore. Plus, all the maps are included free anyway.
@@Dcrainmaker Tkx !
Am I the only one who wishes they would add ebike assist level to the di2 shifter buttons? Seems like an obvious thing
Ray -- any idea why SEA units do not qualify for Beta program? These updates come very late to us and that's a shame.
As many times as I've asked, I've never gotten a good explanation as to why the APAC units always lag...so...so...so...far behind.
@@Dcrainmaker thank you Ray for taking the time to reply. Yeah, it's absolutely frustrating.
Does anyone know if the Edge 1030 plus will also get the new features, with the next FW release?
Nah, we are doomed.
No plans there.
@@Dcrainmaker as you have mentioned in on of your articles. It really is stupid to buy a flagship product and not have better feature than a never mid range model. 😏
@@zmlinaric But the Edge 1030 was released 7 years ago. It's now three generations of flagship products back: Edge 1030, then Edge 1030 Plus, then Edge 1040, and now Edge 1050. The Edge 540/840 both came out just over a year ago.
@@Dcrainmaker i understand the concept, but look at the iPhone. They update the features way back, and don’t tell me that 1030 can’t have a mountain prediction as the 1040 has, when you don’t have a planned route?? Or the fatigue level and features like it! It’s purely about money not about the features.
Does anyone know if you can share routes with an older device like an edge 530?
Sadly not.
I installed beta on garmin 840, the garmin speed 2 is keep on saying "speed sensor connected" every 5 seconds.
Is this a bug.
Any solution except just removing the sensor till bug gets fixed?
I'd say it sounds like a bug. I'd suggest reporting it in the beta forums. And yeah, for now I'd just disable or remove the sensor pairing. Or, even try re-adding it.
I just bought a 1040 from Garmin direct on sale for $500. Still not sure if the extra $200 is worth it. Just got the box delivered from Garmin and I haven’t even opened it yet. What are your opinions?
I got it too, I’m enjoying it so far for the big screen bc I use navigation a lot. The screen is very readable auto brightness does lag if you go under a bridge, but I don’t think it justifies upgrading to the 1050. I haven’t had to charge the device since I got it after doing 10-40 mile rides.
@@gritynity I just bought the FSA K-Wing AGX handlebars with the difference. I race gravel on the SE US.
Garmin share, will that work sending to older devices like the 1030p for example? I really hope so as i always found that useful at times with my friends
Sadly not
@@Dcrainmaker shame...
Is it finally possible to sync your garmin with your phone for new routes while being in a workout?
It had been for two years with the edge x40 series.
@@Dcrainmaker so when in a ride i can create a new one on my phone and just load it into the garmin without exiting the training? it was bothering me so much with my 1030 that i switched to wahoo

Is 840 unit's CPU still robust with all new features? Or is it getting bloated for its hardware? Will 840 be EOU soon?
My edge 530 died yesterday. What device you recommend me?
Thanks for this Ray!
Ordered a 1050 yesterday, but now I'm having second thoughts lol.
I've been using my watch up until now, so anything would be an upgrade, just wondering if a 1040 would have been the better buy.
The way I see it - for the 1050 you pay around 250 to 300 euro more for a better screen, while the 1040 already has a screen which is more than good enough. I think the price difference with the 1040 is way too big.
Eventually they'll stop updates for 40s like 30s so keep the 50 lol
@@xfg007 When that happens the 1070 will have been released.. the price gap is just too big for a reason like this imho.

Will 1040 get Bell function?😊
Any updates for Edge 1000?
I think garmin needed to add bell functionality to 1040, any sound is good as bell substitute, when my 1040 starts beeping for any reasons I always get noticed by other people :D

Wow. They just keeping leaving my 1030 plus in the dark ages. 😢
No option to turn off virtual partner?
I found the unit goes to sleep whilst updating the maps, so I ended up with no maps and had to plug it into the pc anyway...
Excellent news for the 1040 crowd. As a 1030+ I'm still out in the cold, but happy they didnt just drop the 1040
No more updates for the 1030+?
To clarify: still getting some, but Garmin intentionally lessened the cadence of updates that could have easily gone to the 1030+ (ClimbPro everywhere, etc) as soon as they released the x40-series. GPLama noted that Garmin cut off top-tier support to the 1030+ way too soon - - hoping this doesn't happen for the 1040 owners
I didnt understand if edge 840 could have the "ring bell" mode with this firmware
Also if you could see on the map the "paved or unpaved" what coulde be great for gravel or just alerts
Thanks a lot
No bike bell unfortunately for Edge 840, as it lacks the hardware.
Whoever passes Rainmaker's house now and is using new software will be getting lots of hazard and dangerous animals alerts 🤣
So many!!!!
