Dear chef John, I'm only 13 but I know I want to be a chef and I feel like watching your videos I've learned so much and realized how interesting I find cooking, thank you so much
I remember watching this video 5 years ago and desperately wanting to make this but I was afraid to waste money on a dish that I'd mess up. I saw this video come back to me on my timeline today and now I'm in a place were I can make it and not fear messing up. It's all part of the plan, I guess. Thank you Chef John!!
That whole "you're the lords of your gourds" phrase you do for each meal is such an inspiring thing to say! Having that mental note has always helped me with my flavors! Thanks
Chef John, love this recipe. I have been making it since last four years my family loves it. Every time I make this recipe I turn this RUclips. Cannot make it without hearing your voice., your the lord of your gourds. Thank you so much.
HEY everybody! In all honesty, this was far and away the best soup of my life. I gave some to a friend who exclaimed that it was the best soup of her life. Give this one a try (imperative command verb form).
I tried this recipe last week and was seriously blown away by how good it turned out 😍 my whole family was so delighted as well, especially my mom who is a big fan of butternut squash. Thank you Chef John for the wonderful recipe❤️
i always loved watching your videos Chef John. but wow. i never thought i would need these recipes to save a life. my sister has stage 3 pancreatic cancer and im making this for her so i looked for your recipe because i know you are the best. THANK YOU SO MUCH... NOW MORE THEN EVER
This was absolutely delicious! I only had half of a butternut squash because I used the other half to make something else in Friday. I was looking for something to do with the rest and this pops up on my RUclips! I used a sweet potato to make up for the missing half of squash and my husband and I both LOVED this soup. Super easy to make, and delicious. Thanks Chef!
I made this for thanksgiving and it was a huge hit. None of it was left! I will says it’s a lot of energy and time for a soup, so this is definitely not something I would do everyday, but it’s a great soup and I will redo again.
Dear Chef John, I made this recipe today. My husband and I loved it. It was so delicious. Thank you very much for sharing your talent. I started listening to your voice because it was interesting and different and now I can cook these lovely recipes. This was the best soup I ever had. You are awesome!
I've honestly never cared for squash soup, but this looks fantastic! The caramelization on those roasted veggies, straining to get rid of the fibrous bits, the apple cider vinegar! My taste buds can't wait to give this one a try.
just made this one; I used 2 small carrots and 2 small parsnips, a kent pumpkin, and I put in olive oil and sage powder, (had no leaves), but apart from that, the same recipe. Absolutely a family (of one) favorite. The apple cider really made a huge difference. A beautiful soup. Thanx Chef John!
Toasted squash seeds are so good that it's unthinkable to waste them. Yes, separating the seeds from the pulp is tedious and messy, but if you soak them in salted water for a little while it's a much easier job.
Another great recipe chef John! It turned out great. My wife and I loved it but my kids unfortunately said it looked like diarrhea. Oh well you can't win em all I guess. Please keep the recipes coming.
Hello dear chef, I have just started watching your videos, love you Canadian accent another way you explain, watch the butter squash soup looked amazing will try it thank you x
I just made this soup and it was delish! 5 stars. Some tips: add a tsp or 2 of apple cider vinegar first, then taste. Add more if needed but you really don't need to. Also, if you have a powerful blender like a Vitamix or Blendtec, you do not need to stieve the soup after blending it. It will be smooth and creamy...
This looks incredibly silky & perfect. Always thought butternut squash soup would be too complex to try, but I think I could do this! Love how creamy it is without being cream-based too. Bravo, Chef John! Killed it yet again!
Chef John, Just want to thank you for a very amazing RUclips and recipe food blog. I had a dinner last night with some of my closest friends 6 couples. My husband and I made this earlier and it was amazing! So rich in flavor. My husband was never a big fan of butternut squash soup before, but after eating this, he kept saying how good it is and decided that this is his top 3 favorite soup.

Chef John, proper health and safety rules compel me to tell you (and your viewers) that this soup, while totally awesome, should be made and consumed in small batches. Unless you have tomorrow off, or work from home :p
My boyfriend made this for my birthday earlier this week. He followed the recipe exactly, and wow! It's the best butternut squash soup I've had (and it's my go-to soup in any restaurant). Fantastic!
I made this and it was absolutely fabulous! But unlike you I didn't have any honey, so instead I added a little traditionally made cider, ( a slightly acidic and sweet liquor ) it worked really well. I will definitely make this again!

I flipped open two cookbooks this week and they opened to butternut squash soups...and now this video. I think the universe is trying to tell me something.
I did a Chef John with this meal. I wanted a roast turkey breast and, seeing all the gorgeous flavour in my roasting pan, I marinaded my turkey in the butter nut squash drippings. It was awesome. But that's Chef John thinking for you. Delicious.
I've made this twice this month! My new favorite winter soup! Had to use dried sage, and instead of the chili powder you use, I used some powdered serrano chili I like...and doubled the recipe this time. Thanks for sharing this recipe, Chef John!
Chef John, do you think you can create a playlist for your soup recipes? I'm all about making homemade soups, stocks, and stews during the colder months (Oct - Feb) and I'd love to experiment with new recipes; specifically yours. Cheers! Update: Just saw the playlist. THANK YOU!!!! :)

This is my favorite recipe!! I found this video this past Thanksgiving when my mom had to have emergency dental work and I wanted a yummy fall soup for her. I have now made this several times since then. DELICIOUS.
I made this tonight, it was absolutely fantastic! I can see how it would become a weekly fall favorite. Great recipe as always, Chef John 🙌🏻 my first time making brown butter too! It was a lot of fun.
I do NOT like butternut squash, but I had some in the fridge for some reason and I made this today. It is GORGEOUS 😍😍 I added paprika also to intensify the sweetness when roasting. Thank you 😊

I absolutely love butternut and grew a ton in my first garden this year. But I cannot imagine the soup tasting good as I like butternut slightly sweetened. . I like my butternut chopped and roasted with a sprinkle of brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice but I might have to try it since reading your comment.

Used some fresh sage from our neighbors' garden and made this soup today. I have made soup with squash before, but your additions and great instructions have elevated it! Thank you!
I love this soup and all the appreciate creative and nostalgic comments down below. Glad you like Canadians …. I'm vegan, and honestly don't usually bother replicating meat or dairy, but there really is a vegan crème fraiche that is incredible …. sage is mandatory and the apple cider vinegar was perfect. Made it yesterday; brilliant. Tx from Montreal, home of the 500,000 strong climate change protesters, including our prime minister. Feeling temporarily good, but politics, …. not as reliable as food.
Wow! You had me at "brown sage butter" :) Quick question, my skillet is dark, any tips on gauging the butter as it browns? Thanks for another winner, :)
In my country we use squash a lot, but for desert recipes, we make cakes and muffins and we eat it just baked in the oven. I heard this soup too many times and after this video, I am so making this these days. Thanks!
Dear Chef John...i just cooked this Recipe from you for my Mother and i have have to say...this was the most amazing Squash Soup i ever had! Thank you so much for this Recipe
Wow, really? You should check out on Facebook a page called Tasty... I made this way too good butternut squash fettuccini Alfredo recipe from them on Friday. They're the reason why I had a squash in the first place. I hate it because it's a super fatty recipe, but dammmmnnnn it was worth it.
😋 I couldn’t believe how AMAZING this soup came out!! 🍯I used HONEYNUT SQUASH and apple cider vinegar and honey. Be sure to SALT generously. This is RESTAURANT quality soup!! And so SOUL satisfying. Thank you for an amazing recipe!!💫
That was the comment I was going to make. I put the chicken stock in the casserole dish and put it back in the oven to heat it enough to deglaze it. Lots of flavor in there. Of course my casserole pan wasn’t an All-Clad :)
It is sitting on the stove now just finished. I didn’t look at specific measurements, just your video. I also used vegan soy free “butter” and added some coconut milk due to possible allergies. Not a vegan. Added a bit muck cyan. This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn’t strain it just blended a lot as I don’t have a great strainer. Hats off to you sir! I will now serve this along with smoked pork shoulder for our Halloween friends gathering. It will definitely disappear.
I was just thinking that. Amazing video, amazing recipe... voice-over is... meh. Wish I wasn't focusing on that, so trivial. But there you have it. It kind of distracts from the squashy goodness. Food for thought.

I love his voice !
I make this at least once or twice a year during the holidays....it's always a hit!!
Ty Chef John🎉
i snorted into my coffee when he said " the oooooollllddd poka poka" LOL
The best... I tried most of the recipe. They have been successful! Thanks chef John. U r the best chef ever 😊
I'm going to make this for the family dinner for Christmas
Walter Shmitty I'm making this now.
Eloise Thomas is it as easy as Chef John makes it seem?
Walter Shmitty Yes, it is. No mess. Simple and easy and very tasty.
Eloise Thomas Great! thanks for the feedback
Walter Shmitty that's sweet :)
I made this today and it’s amazing! I didn’t have sage but I toasted garam masala and a bay leaf in the brown butter 😋
Can you PLEASE make a chicken and wild rice soup? :)
+lee yang, perhaps a turkey and wild rice soup? It will soon be TurkeyDay here, always need recipes for the leftover bird.
+Christine King that sounds like a great idea as well! :D
Chef John please read this~
+lee yang Mmmmmmm, wild rice...
Absolutely delicious recipe, thank you!
I used ready cut up butternut squash which worked out perfectly with the carrots and onions roasting time
So glad to see this. We just harvested, a wheelbarrow full of butternut squash.
I will check it out. Squash is pretty much the only plant that thrived in my garden this year.
Same here! I had 8 plants and harvested 22 butternuts!
No de-glazing of the roasting pan?! Chef, how could you!! ;)
That was the comment I was going to make. I put the chicken stock in the casserole dish and put it back in the oven to heat it enough to deglaze it. Lots of flavor in there. Of course my casserole pan wasn’t an All-Clad :)
This was absolutely delicious! Thank you for the tip on cutting the squash!
2:17 - 'The size of your butter nuts'. - I could go in a hundred different directions here, but I will leave it for you to finish the joke.
Just made this and my family absolute loved it! Thank you !
I put nutmeg in my pumpkin soup is that weird
sidorotea no not at all, my mom does too.
It will definitely disappear.
you Cook it that long because it breaks up the starches
but does it break up the nutrients though when over cooked?
i did not have stock, sage and the patience for a sieve but this still blew me away. will definitely need this in my system on the regular.
Why can't you speak with normal inflections?
What is normal?
Mohamjip Everyone who sounds like Sean obviously 😑
AH, vive la difference!
I was just thinking that. Amazing video, amazing recipe... voice-over is... meh. Wish I wasn't focusing on that, so trivial. But there you have it.
It kind of distracts from the squashy goodness. Food for thought.
I like his voice
I added some freshly cracked black pepper, paprika, and cinnamon to this as well. Great recipe! 😋
