- Two Ukrainian speakers, Alex and Bogdan, compete against two Persian speakers, Sara and Amir. The Persian language, which at times is referred to by its endonym Farsi, is a Western Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It holds official status in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is referred to as Dari in Afghanistan, and Tajik in Tajikistan. It is also widely spoken in other parts of the Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. Ukrainian (українська мова) is the official state language of Ukraine originating from the Old East Slavic of the early medieval state of Kievan Rus'. The Modern Ukrainian language has been in common use since the late 17th century. In this video we explore some similarities that the two languages share, despite one being an Iranian language, and the other being Slavic.

Bahador Alast. If I am not wrong then you previously uploaded this video few months ago, but then the title of this video was Persian vs. Russian. Both White guys in this video were Russian in your previous video, but in this video they are surprisingly Ukrainian.
TA Videos You're right that these are the same guys, and in this video we had a different list of words. They are Russian speakers and they are Ukrainian nationals, so they speak both languages.

I love the idea of looking for connections between seemingly distant languages! I was so surprised to learn how Persian and Ukrainian are related. 😂They even got the sentences right!
Nice to see you here. Indo-Iranians is the largest non-Slavic component within the Ukrainian ethno-genesis. The slavs there heavily intermixed with Indo-Iranians...That's why ethnologists are confused whether Sarmatians were Indo-Iranians or slavs, the truth is probably they were a mix of both!
They're not distant though, they are very similar. The Scythians which were an Iranian tribe lived and settled in modern day Ukraine from the 7th to 3rd BC. Their language sounds very similar to Ukrainian and it is said that Ukrainians originated from this tribe which originated from Iranians so Iranians and Ukrainians are very similar to each other.

But this ukrainians used some russian words that are inapropriate to this translation chalenge:for exemple words such as diamond and axe-they used to translate as like in russian-almaz and tapor and not like in ukrainian - diamant and sokyra!!They confuse the languages and give to the other part of peoples that ukrainian sounds and spells and use the same vocabulary -misconfusing them !!If it's Ukrainian and Persian then the ukrainian guys must use corect vocabulary words as in standart ukrainian language not mix or choose russian equiwalents,even if they know two of them!Persian pair don't used arabic borrowings in their language , but tried to use persian words!!!For russian-persian on this chanel is speciffic video!!!

I like how you tackled actual indoeuropean common words and ancient loanwords instead of just recent loanwords and international words.
"Zhuvaty" vs "javidan", "shissot"" vs "shesh sad" definitely trace back to the common indoeuropean heritage.
Topor is an ancient borrowing from Iranian languages, most probably from sarmatian or even scythian since it's known in old East Slavic from it's very beginning.
Kalyan is a recent borrowing from Persian.

Same in Arabic. "Almaas" for plural and "masa" for singular.
Ukrainian actually has not one, not two, but *three* words for "diamond": almaz (алмаз), diamant (діамант), bryliant (бриліант).

Just to clarify:
At around the 3 minute mark sasha said "We should speak Ukrainian" (in reference to them being Russian speakers) and bogdan said "Indeed".
Also, there are 2 words for axe in Ukrainian: "Sokyra" and "Topír", "Tapór" is Russian.

"topor" is ukrainian word too, but it's more old or dialectal form. Now it`s not literary, but popular. Some north dialects saved [o] or the old diphtongs which did not change to [i] (see: ikavism)
Yeah, it's definitely dialectal, I don't think all of Ukraine could have been influenced by ikavism. Also, a lot of old texts have "o" instead of "i".

First time i think of the similarity of the English word "chew" and the Kurdish word for it which is "Cu", prononunced "Jeuw" almost like you say Jew in English. These indo-european connections are amazing. I find new stuff every day.

I'm originally Iranian, visited Ukraine, LOVE the people there, made some very good friends! of course there are also a few bad people, but that's everywhere, but majority are hard-working kind soul people. It's unfortunate that people there don't really know much about Persian people as they only hear & see politics and the whole middle-east crap going on on tv and they associate, but we are in general cultured, respectful and civilized people with an ancient history. In fact I noticed that Ukrainian & Iranians have the same historical & political struggles and sufferings in common.
Ah, thank you for this, Bahador. I've been to beautiful Ukraine and have wonderful Ukrainian friends who are very hospitable. As they knew I'd feel nostalgic, they brewed tea in a samovar for me (why you didn't mention anything about samovar? LOL) and also cooked Kuku Sibzamini (I forgot its Ukrainian name). So anyway, when I saw this, I got very excited. I'm going to share it with my Ukrainian friends. Hospitality, arts and kindness is within the Ukrainian DNA/blood.

Samovar is not Ukrainian, but rather Russian thing.
The numerals are very similar in Indo-Iranian and Slavic languages. In Latin languages there similarities too, but a bit less. There is a hypothesis that Latin and Slavic both originate from ancient Sanskrit. The discrepancy to different linguistic branches occurred several millennia ago.
Baltic numerals are almost identical to Iranian: du / du, šeši / šaš, aštuoni / hašt etc.

Thank you so much! I have actually been thinking about doing this. We'll try to organize it, the only issue is in Canada, when people speak Persian they tend to forget a lot of the dialectal terms and expressions. For example, Shahrzad is from Mashhad and my dad is from Hamedan, but I wouldn't say either one of us speak with that accent when we speak Persian. So I am just trying to have people take part who have a really noticeable accent and are very familiar with the dialects, whichever one it may be! :)

Sarmatians, Antes. Very old Indo-European (Aryan) roots. Ukraine's river names are of these origins.

Yeah also it shoud be pretty fun to see because our dna is thracian,slavic and proto-bulgar. And proto-bulgar were most likely from iranian descendant and i belive we still have some words in common, also the same with greek and since we were under ottoman rule for 500 years we obviously picked up some turkic words and after we got liberated we didnt have many words for many things that were in existence so we took many western words as well. And the core of the language is based from Old Bulgarian - which is Old Church Slavonic - spoken from late First Bulgarian Empire to the end of The Second Bulgarian Empire(the language that is bassicaly the root of every slavic language nowdays). So basically we shoud have in common with pretty much every indo-european language and it shoud be very interesting! :D

The letter ق /q/, which is Arabic, doesn’t exist in Indo-European languages. So in Ukrainian, قلیان is pronounced as Kalyan.
The letter ق /q/ is always replaced by /k/. In Iran, the letter ق /q/ is sadly pronounced.
Also in Ossetian the word "where" means "de" just like in Ukrainian. The Ossetians pronounce the letter "g" like "h" the same in Ukrainian.

Mehdi jan, I know what you're thinking, but it's not. That episode was Russian, while this one, with the same participants, is Ukrainian. Bogdan and Alex are Russian speakers who are Ukrainian nationals, so they speak Ukrainian as well. We did this video, but because of so many requests on Instagram recently we were trying to accommodate those and did not have a chance to upload this one yet.

in Ukrainian language haven't word "Topor" (Топор), but Ukrainian language have a word "Topiretc" (Топірець), not only "sokyra" (сокира). But, word "Diamond" like "Diamant" (Діамант) also present in Ukrainian.. Not only "Almaz".."Almaz" in Ukrainian it only nature mountain rock for Diamant. "Diamant" - its Gems by jewerly job..

In amharic we say shay for tea and. Almaz for diamond.its the same for tigrigna too.
That guy in a checkered shirt is pretty smart and funny. He started to use words already known to another side (like machine, shisha), and also he used English loanwords (dollar, chocolate) to make sure Persian side will at least get a clue what the sentence is about.
