    This brought me to tears! Literally! I have ALWAYS loved the sound and versatility of a 12 String. I have LOST the ability to play for two reasons: First, many years ago I was caught in the crossfire of two gangs shooting it out in a turf war, and a 9 mm round passed through my Left hand shattering the bone in my little finger. Then years later arthritis took out my Index finger and the bones had to be replaced with a special Polymer prosthetic.
    So, I had to shift from PLAYING music to recording music. I now own a small media archiving service called North Coast Digital in Warrenton Oregon.
    I understood EVERY term and nuance of these men's conversation. I would be HONORED to speak with EITHER one of you very fine people!

      Hey man, I’m genuinely sorry to hear about what happened to your hand. I hope you aren’t living with too much daily pain
      Have you ever tried playing a lap steel before? You hold a bar with your left hand, so finger dexterity isn’t much of a concern. I hope you get the chance to give one a try. Rogue makes one that’s only 100 bucks! Easy way to dip your toes into it for cheap

    Wow, flipping the E and A strings (a la Rickenbacker) makes a lot of sense in fingerstyle. I'm going to have to do that with my next string change. I really love fingerstyle with the 12 string and I noted the difference Doyle mentioned with the octave strings on top. My Yamaha FG820-12 sounds amazing for an inexpensive guitar.

    Super! I really enjoy hearing Doyle playing a 12 String Guitar and Guild is excellent! He has so much fun rockin' out which is a happy thing and not incompatible with his Gospel and country music. A real treat to hear him picking that twelve string Guild! Many thanks for demonstrating the fine instrument at Sweetwater!

    I've had a 12 string for 10 years and I'm so glad I watched this. I can now go out into the garden, smash it up and burn it to keep us warm in the winter.
    I've always fancied learning the sax come to think of it....

    Get a good 12 and they can be surprisingly comfortable to play. I don't have (and couldn't afford) a Guild 12 like this but I do have Taylor 562ce which is ridiculously comfortable to play all down the neck. (I find it easier than my 6 string parlour). the shorter scale and 12th fret body join helps with that. Must say, I like Doyle's idea of switching the bass/treble arrangement (which is what Rickenbacker does).

    What is it Leo Kottke said? Something to the effect that the worst(best) thing that could happen to a guitar player, is to fall in love with the 12 string. I'm really missing my old 12 string acoustic Fender about now, it was cheap, but it sure did sound magical.

    Between Doyle Dykes in this video and Tommy Emmanuel from another I've seen recently, I'm being introduced to some styles of really energetic and driving acoustic guitar playing I've never heard before. It's really good stuff!
    Planning on getting a new acoustic (probably Nylon specifically) fairly soon. The biggest question is just _which one do I want_.
    A friend was trying to push me to get a 12 string. I can kinda hear the appeal here. But also that seems a little out of my price range too...

    • @Catlover777ful
      @Catlover777ful 2 года назад +6

      Yes, you can!!! Don't tell that lie to yourself ever again! The only one keeping you from finger-picking a 12-string maybe even like a banjo is you. I've been doing it for years and more years. Hitting two strings at the same time is no different that hitting one. In fact, it's easier since your fingers have two targets rather than one. Get in there and practice. If I can do it, you surely can.

      @@jackloganbill605 I think that 12-strings are to stringed instruments what a good pipe organ is to keyboard instruments. Just don't quit completely. I'm 73, and I get those sore ol' fingers, too, but I'll quit playing when I die and not before. Never give up even if you do have to slow down a bit, just don't stop or you'll regret it one day.
